      James Corden and Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman have big careers and the directors and producers and marketing are banking on them to get people to watch it . Bring in their fan demographic. Hence why probably there is so much time spent on those characters and emotional back stories. I think this movie is less about “a” lesbian couple but more about pride, and prejudice and fear of being hurt. Like how Barry’s mom , Mrs Greene and Emma’s parents all represent the difficulties with acceptance. The ladder of whom represent all those people that don’t have a change of heart.

      The movie was good I guess🤷🏼‍♀️ I mean it's not broadway... but I love musicals, Meryl Streep, Ariana Debose, Nicole Kidman (Even tho she wouldn't be my choice to these role), Keegan Michael-Key... sooo I liked it, (and loved Meryl "It's not about me"! Her voice's so much better now), but it's just not half as good as the original.

      plus Jo Ellen was great in these role!
      And most of the songs were great! about them I just really didn't enjoyed when James Corden kinda talked instead of singing during the first song, I hate so much when actors sing that way during the musical movies😅

      Btw, am I the only one who think they changed the plot to Dee Dee's love story somewhere in the middle of the movie?😅😅 (Dee Dee is my fav character so I didn't minded it at all, but for the true fans of the broadway show, I think that must have been pretty annoying😅)

    I thought James Corden did a great job in this movie, and I wish he weren't getting so much flack for it. I think the only thing he's doing with this voice is an American accent, and he has a naturally flamboyant personality - I'm speaking as someone who's been a big fan of his since before he won a Tony Award. He's so talented, has a joyful spirit naturally that exudes from him, and he really showed his range as an actor in this role. I love the original cast actor who played Barry, but I can love James in this role too.

    • @mareksison
      @mareksison 3 роки тому +9

      @@angelfromhvn Yeah but if the openly gay director Ryan Murphy picks James Corden, maybe he just thinks that he's the best actor for the job????

    • @angelfromhvn
      @angelfromhvn 3 роки тому +5

      @@mareksison I also believe he was hired for his name or for the draw that it could bring to the production. Ryan Murphy is also to blame for the casting decision. However, I don’t think he did a terrible job, it just felt weird knowing that there are SEVERAL gay actors waiting for this kind of opportunity.

    • @BellasielBOB
      @BellasielBOB 3 роки тому +3

      @@angelfromhvn Well remember, Ryan Murphy produced the revival of "The Boys in the Band" on Broadway (and then directed the filmed version) and he made sure that each role was played by an openly gay actor because it's a play all about gay men. So it's not as though he's not familiar with this issue. And I feel that, if they were casting solely based on how big a name it is, there are others with a lot less talent they could have picked over James (who had his fair number of dissenters even before this). I think it was talent first, name second, that went into casting him. For better or worse, getting names into your productions (movies, TV, Broadway, everywhere) helps it along, but at least this time they chose a name that is more than talented enough to play this role.

    I think it was important to add more about Barry’s story to share the narrative that parents who don’t accept their child for who they are will ultimately lose them if they don’t learn to change their minds. It’s then further explored with Alyssa & her mother, who chooses to come around sooner rather than later. This is what families watching on Netflix all around the world in their homes need to see!

    You described my feelings for this film so well! I'm so conflicted... Some parts I love, but they did indeed cut so much from Emma and Alyssa. And the backstory added to the other characters wasn't adding to the story.
    I did love Meryl Streep's adaptation of Deedee, and Ariana's face showed so much emotion which I loved. Just the emotion in her eyes made me feel so much. I watched scenes of them multiple times, just to see Alyssa looking so in love. The looks she gives are just perfect.
    Jo Ellen was amazing, but she seemed so happy in moments I expected her to be a bit more sad or frustrated (like in Just Breathe). I did love her version of Emma as well though.
    The other actors were great as well, but I'm conflicted about James Corden... At some points I don't like his casting, but in other moments I did like him.
    Love Thy Neighbour was just perfectly made into the movie. I also loved that they kept the choreography of Tonight Belongs To You.
    The Broadway musical will keep its number one spot in my heart as well, but I like watching the Emma/Alyssa scenes on their own.
    Thank you for putting my thoughts in such beautiful words! If someone asks me what I think of The Prom the movie, I should just send them this video haha

    As a person who watched the broadway and the movie at the same time, I actually really loved the movie and didn't have your same criticisms which is perfectly fine. But I honestly thought giving Deedee that scene in the motel room was quite needed for me since I found her character in the musical quite surface level which is disappointing since she takes lots of time on stage. It made me care about her more which is important since she is a main character.

    I don't entirely get why it matters that Barry has more screen time. This movie is about the representation in my opinion, not about specific people. I wish Emma and Alyssa got more screen time but Barry's story is just as representative. In fact, Barry's story spoke to me more than Emma's, even though Barry was played by a straight actor. I don't even like James Corden but I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and his character. I get where you're coming from but I think that it comes down to what specific people want out of it, you were looking for something that the movie doesn't provide. And this way, there are two versions that can hit people in different ways: the musical and the movie. Two versions of the story with different parts shown, rather than two identical versions of the same story.

      I think the problem a majority of our gay male community has with Cordens performance is this need as a straight man to affect his characters sexuality with this stereotypical representation ranging from flitty hand movements to his upsetting“gay voice”. It’s very common for straight actors to do this when playing gay. We’ve come so far with equality and gay rights it seems ridiculous to still see us portrayed like we were 21 years ago in Oscar winning movies like As Good As It Gets. OSCAR WINNING MOVIES. Smh. It just sucks that even now this is what we get.
      It’s bad enough we’re always dying or terminally depressed or victims of violence or in some kind of taboo relationship leading to misery. Now we’re back to this cartoonish version of being gay. Its just exasperating, you know?
      I did love the movie, despite this one issue. It would have been better if they had cast a gay actor. There could have been more of a connection for us. But, all in all, everyone was fantastic. Meryl was stunning and with Keegan they stole my lil gay heart. I loved it all. The finale kiss was an explosion of joy that brought me to tears. Can’t wait to own the blu ray!

    • @Seraserastria
      @Seraserastria 3 роки тому +2

      I see your point and agree, a gay actor would have been a much better fit than James Corden. The character was good, and I think Corden's performance was decent, but a gay actor would have been better as there wouldn't be a sterotyping problem.

    I think the reason they gave the mom scene to Barry in this was just that it made a bit more sense. In this scenario, Barry's mom had much more time to reflect on what she and her husband had truly done, whereas Emma's parents would have only had about a year. I think it was also partially to show that time doesn't heal all wounds, and that even though Barry had grown and move past it (mostly) he still held the inner child that wanted nothing more than to feel loved by the people you tend to seek it from the most (your caregivers). I agree it would have been nice to see the "I was the child" line from Emma, as well, but I do think it hit a lot more coming from Barry since you'd naturally assume he was over it. Just my opinion, though!!

    It’s interesting that so many people think this is Emma and Alyssa’s story. It’s as much about the Broadway actors and their life choices. The writers/director use their expanded story to appeal to a wider audience as well as showing a bit more of why people reject alternative lifestyles.
    Also consider an audience who may not be as much into musicals or teen drama but are big Meryl Strep or James Cordan fans (yes there are lots of those.)
    BTW...I was also horrified when they cut off “You Happened” but I realized they wanted the audience to focus on the 2 girls who see Emma and Alyssa together. It looks like an editing choice because it end so abruptly AND the FULL VERSION OF “YOU HAPPED” is on the soundtrack for the movie.

      okay yes this is all valid, I know the story is about the broadway actors as much as emma/alyssa and it's a direct split however my personal opinion with the film was that it didn't become a direct split and just went fully onto dee dee and barry's background and pushed emma and alyssa's arc into the background during the process, this was the main/only thing that irked me regarding the film. I get the intention with barry's storyline too, i just felt it was stretched out way too much and yeah having those two is good marketing and I get it, however (again just my opinion) many musicals are supported anyway regardless of who is starring and have been majorly successful with og casts (i.e. rent film adaption)

I'm also sorta mad that they gave Barry and his mum a story line. Also, I love Kerry but I sort of wish they didn't have that redemption arc because it takes away from the truthful reality.
    Again, it's Emma's story so all the storyline about Barry annoys me a little.
    Unruly heart gives me goosebumps every time I watch that scene.

    There are parts of the film I loved and parts I hated. I loved all the lead actresses. I loved the music (although I hate that they cut parts of the songs).
    I hated that it felt like the 2 main characters felt more like side characters at points. It seems like they didn't have a good balance of where to develope certain characters more and where to dial it back. (My exception to this is Angie. I think even the couple extra lines of dialogue made a HUGE difference and really filled her out as a character.) I think too much time was spent on Dee Dee and Barry's characters (although Meryl Streep was amazing and I don't think any other screen actress could have pulled it off the way she did. I will not diss a queen. She deserves respect.) I really loved the way Barry's Going to Prom was done, but I think I would have appreciated it more if they didn't spend so much time on Barry prior.
    I didn't like the reunion with the mom. Not only because of the reasons stated in this video, but also because they never acknowledged that it was messed up for Dee Dee to do that. It isn't her place to make that decision for somebody and put them in a position to be put face to face with the thing that has caused that kind of hurt in their life.
    I loved that Alyssas mom was there in the end, but it also leaves a complicated question. Are we not going to acknowledge that she went from basically trying to ruin the life of a teenage girl and all of the sudden she is fine with her daughter kissing that girl in front of her? Also why is nobody uncomfortable with this woman being at this prom? She was on the news for this, so everybody there knows who she is, and she had no problems bullying a fifteen year old child! It doesn't matter if you agree with her or not, she is a child and Ms. Green is a full grown woman. Maybe if there was some dialogue after between the two characters it would have fixed this problem, but we go straight from Alyssa and her mom to everybody being happy and acting like she never caused any problems or caused so much pain to Emma. (I will say though that outfit in the end she wore was A👏MA👏ZING👏👏👏👏👏.)
    I liked it overall. I would watch it again, but there are parts I will fast forward.

    I kinda had the same experience as you when it comes to The Prom. I saw the Broadway version through a slime tutorial too and immediately fell in love with and it's now one of my favorite musicals if not my favorite. I agree with you on the part of having a filmed version of the stage production and I'm still holding out hope for one to be released in the future. So fingers crossed!
    Now onto my thoughts about the movie. I personally really loved it. I mean, I do have some issues with it but overall, I loved it because it's fun and exciting and just happy! I think it also helps that I tend to have an easier time separating my experiences with stage productions, movies, books, and tv shows on the same story since they're all very different media formats and it's not quite fair to compare them to each other since they all require very different things. I agree with you that James Corden wasn't the best actor to play the role of Barry but I thought he did a decent job and I didn't mind him in the role. Personally, I would have cast a gay actor for the role but it is what it is and I've learned not to trust Ryan Murphy so I wasn't so surprised by his choice. Regardless, I don't think James did as bad as a job that a lot of people are saying (not you, just people in general).
    My biggest gripe with the film is that Emma and Alyssa had so little lines and scenes in this when they could have added more. That was always my biggest gripe with the musical as well was that, while in the musical it was better, it didn't have a lot of scenes with the two even though the story is about them. Which always made me a little sad and I was really wishing that the movie would change that but instead they made their interactions even shorter. So that was the biggest disappointment for me.
    Anyways, sorry for the wall of words. I'll finish up now! Thank you for the reaction!

    I agree with everything you say. I too try not to compare the movie to its counterpart but you cant help it when they cut so much of what makes the show what it is. Though i wish alyssa could be a little bit more goofier cause thats when we see two sides of alyssa. One side was when we see her with emma and another is the perfect version her mother wants her to be. So by the end of the movie, alyssa would actually makes sense when she says that she just wants to be herself. I blame ryan murphy.

    I tried to see your reaction, but your negativity (at least in the first part of the video) did not let me finish. As a gay person, I don't understand why so many criticize James Corden's performance, as the character himself (both on Broadway and in the movie is and should be stereotyped). Outside of that, I am almost outraged that people are offended by an effeminate gay, that they do exist (in that way and even more exaggerated). These kinds of attitudes leave us as a closed community, which is sarcastic as it is supposed to be what we are fighting against.

    • @becsreacts2568

      I wasn’t trying to be negative, I was just giving my raw reactions and I’d say I just had a mix, I enjoyed parts which is evident but yes I did have issues/critics. I’m not outraged by James Corden, as I said I have no issues with him as an actor I just found him not the right fit and yes Barry’s persona is a portrayal of a very real portion of people within the LGBT community, **however** I know some people were didn’t take well to him ‘putting on a voice’ as it wasn’t exactly needed to go with the representation. You disagree and that’s fine, I was just projecting my thoughts and I found him to get better as the film went on and did a good job with the emotional scenes they put him in. I wasn’t having any sort of attitude to the character of Barry, I love him. I simply didn’t find the actor they chose as the best choice, that’s all. If I came across too negative then I apologise but as I said I was just going off my raw feelings as I had a lot of anticipation for this film. :)

Cause Alyssas mom is so protective and it would make sense that they don’t get to spend much time together. However I understand people’s disappointment when it comes to stuff being cut, but I think that also just happens with stage to film adaptations. But overall I think it was a very well done movie, obviously not perfect, but overall well done. I also agree. I would have loved to cut out the part when Barry tells his story and instead have him just brush it off. I just don't think that the movie should be judged by the Broadway version... They are such different things. For better and worse, cuts and changes will be made. You should take it on its own. Stopping to nitpick every other minute is a drag. The movie was fun and bright and happy and cute. Focusing a little more on the stars only helps bring it to a wider audience. Which is a good thing. I had no problem with James Corden... gay men can play straight womanizing playboys, so who cares. And there are plenty of straight women who have played lesbian characters that I love. I'd rather embrace the joy here.

I also had no issue with James Corden playing Barry because he was straight but more so just because I didn’t find him a good fit, it had nothing to do with the actors sexuality but more so with the way it was portrayed on screen, as I said, didn’t hit me where I had hoped. See, I like James Corden in this role.
    He plays it well.
    He’s already a flamboyant person, so his portrayal isn’t him going overboard to seem gay.
    His voice is sort of a gay voice, but:
    A. Oh well? Some gay people do talk like that. It’s not like it’s a false stereotype.
    B. He’s British and putting on an American accent, it might just be what his American accent sounds like.
    He’s not taking away roles from LGBTQ actors, because this film is loaded with them. Andrew Rannells is gay, and he’s playing a straight (or at least not stated as gay) character.
    I didn’t like the whole extra bit they put in with his mom, but overall, I liked him in the movie. I felt he did a good job.
    As for the other stuff...I don’t like the fact that they cut the Emma/Alyssa stuff, I don’t like that they gave Dee Dee and Tom more romantic screen time, I don’t like that they cut out some of the more controversial jokes...
    But I liked the movie.

Also I didn't actually notice that they cut dance with you a little short are the only one that noticed that they cut short was you happened and the acceptance song I didn't even really mind the acceptance song getting cut down because it's kind of my least favorite also Trent gets a better song and it's one of the best parts of the movie at the very least so but you happened getting cut down was a mistake

      I think some people are mad because of:
      1) they cut a lot of Emma and Alyssa’s screen time to give it to him
      2) is a straight actor playing a gay role (this one can be more forgivable because there are a lot of actors playing gay or straight characters without being one)
      3) James Corden is a bad person

  • @gracewood9332

    If like James Corden did job. He didn't try and sound gay because that's not a thing that's a stereotype. I can see that James tried his best with this roll and so what if he's not gay. Barry being gay does not defy who he is so why does for James. And the American accent is kind of difficult to perfect. (I laugh every time people try to do the South African accent because as a South African I know people suck at it but I don't attack people for it because I know it's hard and so is the American accent to people who aren't American.

    • @becsreacts2568
      @becsreacts2568  3 роки тому +1

      In the beginning I do feel like he tried to make his american accent somewhat more “feminine” and just came across to me as trying to hard to empathise that Barry is a gay man, his accent and performance as a whole got better as it went on, just not the right fit for me, but I agree with you accents can be tricky

    Okay so the point isn't that the actors didn't do a great job because they all did. It's just they kind of took away the attention from Emma and Alyssa while making them back round characters. While putting the spotlight on the straight couple and making the movie seem like it's all about them. Also James Corden is taking the role away from a person that is part of the LGBTQ+ community. Also they cut almost all of Emma and Alyssa's dialogue and gave everyone else more dialogue. In conclusion KEVIN CHAMBERLIN WAS RIGHT THERE COME ON!!!!!!!

    I’m like 2 months late but I need to scream. Sorry long comment incoming. Firstly, I don’t get why people are being so negative in this comment section. You clearly stated how important this musical is to you, you’re allowed to say your criticisms of the movie (especially the Emma/Alyssa ones. Why cut all their scenes/songs like that?? It feels like this movie wanted to show off their big A list actors and forgot to focus their story on the lesbian couple and their struggles which is what we came for!)
    Secondly, I really hate what they did with Barry and his relationship with is parents. He was already over being upset with his parents, he’d moved on from that part of his life! He now was supposed to be a cautionary tale for Alyssa’s mom about how if she didn’t get past her homophobia she would lose her daughter just like his parents lost him! Why ruin that parallel?? I’m so tired of movies/tv shows making gay characters have to make up with their homophobic families!!! Why not let Barry be an example of a gay character who doesn’t need his parents or their approval in order to be happy?!
    Thirdly, what Dede did was so gross and out of order! She should have *never* called Barry’s mom and forced his hand to meet up with her like that.

    James' Character is supposed to be super fem anyway. And sexuality is a spectrum. I'm a gay man and even I can understand that being gay is a spectrum. It's a journey. Plenty of people identify as straight but engage in what could be considered homosexual activity. And I think the more it's gatekept the more exclusive it becomes. The only thing I can't support is cis men playing trans women and cis women playing trans men. That is a struggle not any other part of the LGBQIA+ community can understand and is a journey only someone who is trans can really go through and experience as opposed to being Gay in which even gay men have lived out their lives with women but still were happy. Idk I feel like to judge anyone straight in a gay role isnt like race or gender identity. The lines are very blurred and should be in a lot of ways.

      i hear you totally! I wasn’t judging it based on him being a straight man irl I just wasn’t sure he’d fit and I use personally still don’t, I know Barry is meant to be fem etc. and I love him, I just didn’t feel James’ portrayal as much as I’d have hoped that’s all, but I do think he got better as the film went along!

    I’ve never seen a more judgmental review. Ironic considering the source material. I realize you’re obsessed with the stage version but seriously, move on. This is a film version. It’s not going to be a direct adaptation. Millions of us won’t get a chance to see a professional stage production and we’ll enjoy this for the wonderful film it is.
    I have to say, this need you have for the 4 broadway leads to be backstory-less caricatures is as harmful as the prejudice they’re fighting against. It’s not only about these two girls finding their way, it’s about 4 jaded, lost individuals finding their humanity.

    • @becsreacts2568

      well, I didn’t mean to come across judgemental so apologises for that this was just my raw react, maybe I should have done my react to me watching to for the second time where I was more content with stuff. yeah I do love the show, it did wonders for me through my personal life so I was aware myself that I had a big expectation, maybe a little too much *but* I did say at the ending of my video that as long as this movie brings joy to those who had never heard of the prior adaptions then that was all that mattered, I was simply just expressing that I was disappointed by the cuts made, that’s all. In my personal opinion, the 4 broadway characters had development regardless of the long scenes I said held no purpose, you disagree and that’s cool. I was just stating my view is all, and yeah I was let down by the cuts so maybe I got a little too vented over it, but I agree the movie is great so long as it fulfils its purpose to people, sorry if it came across any other way :)
