Mate how are you not showing any signs of hairloss what's your secret ? Is it a liver cleanse that your doing or something please answer the question I have been a subscriber for years
As an Uncharted fanboy. I enjoyed watching the film. Tom played Nathan well. Mark played Mark well. Yeah it's not an Oscar film, it's not as good as Indiana Jones or National Treasure 1. It's a popcorn flick. It's better then the Mortal Kombat and Tomb Raider reboots. It's a 7/10. I'll watch it again. I can see potential if it gets a sequel
Maybe the movie is just for people who dont play videogames its for casual movie goers. This could have been better as a tv series just like what they did to the last of us fleshed out the characters just like in videogames
It’s not like you’re actually playing through the action scenes anyways. It’s just a long series of cut scenes with the occasional quick time event lol.
There were so many moments that I thought to myself “that’s definitely a climactic moment in the game” and I had impulses to tap QTE button presses in all the action scenes lol
I 100% agree, in any other movie I would've thought it's too ridiculous but Uncharted games were made to be ridiculous. Let's not forget that realism gets thrown out the window within game 1 after you open the golden casket thing lmao
Ya but the games added enough realism you bought it and didn't ask questions. It's like they take things that could actually happen but then turn the dial up to 10. The movie just took all realism and threw it out the window still fun he's but uncharted no.
It's weird how the executives waited 6 years after the release of Uncharted 4 to be like NOW WE SHOULD MAKE AN UNCHARTED MOVIE. If they made it 6+ years ago during the highs it would have made more sense to cast Nathan Fillion given that he was younger.
Nope. There was never a time where Nathan Filion was young enough to play Drake unfortunately. MAYBE if they had made one right after the first game. But 6 years ago was end of Castle Nathan Filion and he was definitely already showing his age.
Let's be honest. "Raiders of the Lost Arc" was one of the first and one of the best Hollywood adventure blockbusters, and pretty much everything after that just kind of mimicked what it did. *EDIT:* Oh geez, I'm sorry. I misspelled "Ark" as "Arc." That's embarrassing. A lot of people called me on that mistake, and I thank you all for that. However, I hope no one took my mistake too much to heart. We all screw up sometimes.
No doubt. But it’s always nice to be surprised by a genuinely entertaining movie when you least expect it. The first National Treasure is a prime example. Whenever that movie is on, I always wind up watching it till the end.
yeah did jeremy mean in "realistic" games specifically, oryx from destiny has lived for billions of years and committed countless genocides throughout his lifespan for example
"Do you remember that Uncharted fan film?" Jeremy how could I ever FORGET the Uncharted fan film? If that could just be made into a like 12-16 episode mini series or something I'd lose my mind
Biggest insult to me was how they drastically changed the story of Sully and Nate. In the original, Nathan met Sully when he was a teenager and they both tried to steal the same treasure. Sully recognized something in Nate, hinting at a past where Sully was in the same place Nathan is now, and he didn't want Nate to end up bad. Thus he became some sort of mentor, which later became a father figure. They trusted each other and cared for each other. In the movie however.. Nathan already is a young adult and Sully sees him pickpocketing, saying "hey kid. You're pretty good. Want to do a complex heist with me where I try to find the trail of an ancient treasure?". And throughout the entire movie, they constantly bicker and don't trust each other. It was not even close to the characters I love.
That short film was amazing, Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake like 10 years ago? Or so, would've made for a great film, also the Sully casting was brilliant for that short as well
@@bertfechner417 Stephen Lang, thank you!! The second I saw him I was like fucking yes, that's him, they definitely dropped the ball with casting in this uncharted though. I dunno about Simmons, it's hard to not see him as a complete maniac in need of a straightjacket thanks to spiderman and whiplash 🤣
I thought Stephen Lang was a bit of an odd choice too, but to be honest I’d take him as Sully over Mark Wahlberg any day of the week. I just still in all these years have not been able to nail down my ideal dream casting for Sully. The only thing I can think of is just getting Richard McGonagle himself, but he doesn’t actually look that much like Sully despite being the actual voice. Plus, at 75 (holy shit), he’s a little old to be doing stunts in live-action.
@@Road_to_Dawn I thought Stephen Lang was the perfect choice, as perfect as I can think of, but you'd drive yourself mad looking for perfection, I thought he would've been the best actor for Sully and until someone else pops into my head he will be my pick.
Thank you for acknowledging Nathan Fillion's fan made movie. After I saw that years ago, I thought to myself that he was the perfect live action casting. And my thoughts have not changed after this movie. It's always about the money, never about sending a message
Nathan Fillion charater from Firefly was one of the inspirations for the Drake so he is literally perfect live action casting. Sadly most likely we wont ever see full fledged movie version with him as Drake :/
Do fans of the game know anything besides Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake? Ugh, the guy is old, he's been old since 10 years! It's like people wanting him for Hal Jordan: he was great as a voice actor but the guy already past the mark!
Crazy how time flys. Jeremy's first video and over 10 years later I'm still watching his videos. You've come a long way Jeremy keep doing these videos don't ever stop. 🤟🤟
Would have loved Nathan Fillion and Bruce Campbell as Nate and Sully. Don’t feel like Uncharted needs an origin story with all the characters as younger versions of themselves.
I'd first heard about Jeremy around a year ago. I've always been a "hand talker", and a friend of mine mentioned "this really funny dude who does movie reviews. He swings his hands all over like you". I've been a fan ever since. Great stuff man, keep it going 👍
Huge die hard fan of the games and I liked the movie. I had a lot of fun. It had its flaws for sure. But I left the movie actually wanting a sequel. I feel like it really set up a future for more movies where it would truly feel like the games. We just had the watch the new characters become who they are.
I'm glad to finally see someone who has the balls to admit that Tom, while being an ok actor, is horribly MISCAST in this role. It's not just that he's 'young'. He's just NOT Nathan Drake. The mannerisms don't match, the face doesn't match, the body build doesn't match. This would have been a much better movie if they had just changed the names of the main characters and the name of the movie. Thank you Jeremy!!!
Tom isn't an "ok" actor. He's in fact really GOOD. It's important to know that miscast has little to do with the actor's chops and more with the fact that he was miscasted and probably misdirected.
@@Mr-R.R. I haven't seen him do anything outside of Spider-man, so I don't know what his real acting ability is. The point is that he's completely miscast in "Uncharted", to the great detriment of the movie/series.
@@Zeoran Yes, i know that and that's what I said as well. But your criticism was misplaced in thinking that it had to do with him being an "ok" actor. Which is not at all the case.
And like I've always said, a video game adaptation should be in the format of a tv series. Not movies. You can't condensed 20-30 hours of gameplay into a 2 hour movie. But in a tv series, you definitely can. That's why I'm very worried about the Metal Gear movie. You can't fit a single Metal Gear game into a movie. The cut scenes in the games were more than 2 hours. Just look at The Witcher. It worked so well as a tv series. Imagine if it was a movie. You can't possibly capture the essence of the game in 2 hours.
You kinda can, because unless it's something like Metal Gear, games are mostly gameplay stringing together story sequences. Cut that part out and you can lose a lot of time.
@@ginge641 i agree. but for games with massive Lore like MGS or GOW, i think its best to stretch it out into a series like The Witcher in order to establish the world of said game. But its frustrating that Hollywood always opt to do these sort of movies sort of like some generic action movie instead of having good story writing. I guess they still haven't figure out that its not just about the action sequences that makes us fans love games like Uncharted/MGS/Splinter Cell/GOW, its the whole story telling part of the games. The story is what captivates us. This may debatable but i think so far only Sonic The Hedghog movie was pretty great and fun. Anyway, appreciate the input. Kudos.
@@JordonPatrickMears11211988 You're right. But somehow its always seems rushed when its in a movie format. or in certain cases, boring as hell. Remember Assassin's Creed movie. It was so boring and uninteresting. I guess the core of the problem is that Hollywood still cant figure out how to write good storyline for game based movies. Which is kinda funny, cos most of these games have good storylines. Kudos to the reply. I love reading other ppl's take on this.
I actually had really a fun time watching this. In my head, this worked as a different version of Uncharted, separate from the games, for a distinct reason: if the movie was trying to exactly copy the games with actors that were 100% identical to their counterparts, I’d be really disappointed because it’d remind me of the games moreso than this one did and tarnish the stellar reputation they have, because those are an experience the movies can’t match. For me this works because while inspired by the games it takes a separate approach that is distinct and different enough that I’m not constantly thinking of the games.
One thing I really like in the Uncharted games are the characters. And I would’ve loved to see a live action version of those characters. So with the casting alone they took pretty much all the fun out of it.
The fan funded movie starring Nathan Fillion is fantastic! Granted it is only 16 minutes long. Why didn’t they just get that cast? The fans of the game have always wanted Fillion and when he commits to a part, he gives it his all.
I'm so happy that you addressed the Nathan Fillion pilot. The number of the people that I've spoken to have said that he is too old to play Drake which I guess I kind of get but damn it do I believe that he would have been the absolute best casting. Also I know that you're probably won't see this, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you and what you do. Your content and.. I guess just your persona and you're openness about struggles that you have had has really helped me through this last year that has been quite a struggle for me. So I guess thank you for being you.
I loved that short to death. However, I still do think he is too old and not the right body type to do half the crazy shit drake does in the games. He would have been perfect 12 years ago leading up to a trilogy that ended maybe 2020 with each movie taking 3 years to release. The problem here wasn't so much the casting. That short was made with love. This movie feels like a cash-grab which is why it feels wrong and worse.
As someone who didn't play the Uncharted games, I appreciate that I can go into this movie without any preconceptions of what the characters should be like. I can just enjoy the movie for what it is, rather than what I think it should be
@@fleeplayTV not everyone enjoys playing videogames or has that time commitment. Spending a Saturday night watching some fun jokes and over the top action scenes is exactly what I needed lol
Yeah wish I could say the same I was extremely disappointed 😞 the games story was honestly 10x better in my opinion so it didn't live up to my expectations unfortunately
It's sad too because Uncharted had the potential to be great, to tell a great story. I know a lot of people are gonna say it's because Tom Holland as Nate, but personally I think he was a great choice. I love when filmmakers make crazy decisions, as long as it doesn't hurt the integrity of the film. With this movie though, it really feels like they saw the cutscenes and set pieces of 1-4 and then watched the Nathan Fillion fan film and just mish mashed them together. And considering Uncharted is known for it's over the top set-pieces the sky was the limit of what Nathan Drake could've done. But just living the Uncharted Greatest Hits is boring, as a fan of film and a fan of the Uncharted I want something fresh something new and exciting. Certainly they'll probably make sequels, but if they're as soulless as this one? You can forget it.
@@SomeGuyNamedPhil Potential to tell a great story? The games already did. What could a film offer us that the game cannot? When you adapt a book into film you get to add visuals and audio. When adapting a film into book, you get more time and space to flesh out certain points in greater detail. When adapting either into a game, you get both AND interactivity. Adapting a game into a film (or book) will only ever create a lesser experience. It literally cannot be done well... there is no need for it to exist.
@@TopTwom sorry probably should've specified that, I meant Uncharted (film) had the potential I do agree the Uncharted games tell really good and exciting stories with solid gameplay and amazing set pieces. And I agree especially with how games are a lot more cinematic nowadays they are kinda their own films.
From what I've been hearing it seems like Uncharted 4 is a better movie than the actual Uncharted movie, like the movie is ok but like...why wouldn't you just play the games?
My son and I went tonight to watch and we actually throughly enjoyed it. We have played through the entire series a few times and we had a blast with the over the top stuff. Oh and cool Easter egg that we spotted was when Nathan and Chloe wash ashore. The character they talk to was actually the voice actor for Nathan drake in the games.
I agree just saw it 5 mins ago! (In the time of commenting) as an uncharted fan. It had a very “uncharted feel” especially the final act of the movie. It was very much like an uncharted game
@KTV 4U well the Angelina Jolie ones, the Alicia Vikander movie was actually pretty decent and solid far better than this one obviously especially for the casting
That cargo plane scene from the video game is clearly inspired from the finale action scene in Timothy Dalton's 1987 Bond film "The Living Daylights." Check that out, as there is no cgi greenscreen there, but actual stuntmen hanging out of a plane while fighting. It's awesome
Good John Barry music for the scene too, "Inflight Flight". Pity Barry and 80s boy band A-ha didn't get on very well during their collab for the film. Barry likened them to the Hitler Youth.
@@skylx0812 Yeah it's certainly telling that a couple of the main themes used in Barry's score were adapted from the two songs Chrissie Hynde/The Pretenders wrote for the film, besides Aha's title song...
It’s funny because I played uncharted first, then later watched some the Bond movies (The Living Daylights among them), and that’s when I realized, “holy crap that must’ve been inspired by James Bond.”
I will say I've never played the games, heard the bad reviews , and went in with low expectations. I came out really enjoying the movie and I'm now interested in playing the games.
Dude, this movie, is pretty a far worse version of uncharted 4. It's a very similar story with the same characters and some locations. The action and fights scenes in this movie were pretty good. But the characters and story telling were fucking awful compared to the games. I seriously suggest you play at least uncharted 4 man, it's so freaking good compared to this movie. Although I don't know if you'd like to play the fourth game first or maybe the whole collection. You can find it pretty cheap on PS4 or if you have a pet it's free with psplus..
@@musicimpact7120 yea I'll definitely check them out once I have time. But still I enjoyed the movie playing the games won't take that away. I'm actually looking forward to them making another. But I'll update here when I play the game see how it is.
Wow, it's been almost 10 years since I first watched your Dark Knight Rises review, and I've watched your reviews since then and based my watchlist on them. Happy Birthday good sir, and keep up the great work.
Thankfully I can separate this movie from the games and take it as a separate thing. I very much enjoyed it. Tom Holland wasn't as miscast as I thought. Outside of the museum break in with Sam it was clear this Nate hadn't done anything illegal outside of pickpockets so that explains why he doesn't give the feel of being able to kill everyone. Still not a great casting but not horrible either. Mark Wahlberg is horrible casting if you love the games but he's fine if you don't know the games.
One of the major problems with games being adapted in to film, especially the RE movies, is these people think that most fans love the games because of these big set pieces or particular moments from the games...which we do, but where they fail is at the little things. The characters, atmosphere, and tone are what make those moments and set pieces so memorable. Sully is just Marky Mark reading dialogue for a character he doesn't understand or connect too. Wahlberg is a good actor, but not a good Sully. RE WtRC tried to recreate a lot of iconic things from RE/RE2, but failed on almost every aspect because they didn't understand the characters or their motivations. We connected with Leon because he was a naïve but good guy in a terrible situation trying to do what he though was the right thing, a rookie cop trying to save lives. Claire had nothing to do with Umbrella until after RC. Claire and Chris were orphans, making her and Chris closer. Claire didn't run away from her brother and Raccoon City, but she did come back to look for him when he was missing. She connects with Sherry because she has those strong family motivations. Both Leon and Claire want to protect and save, but both have different motivations. If you don't understand the characters, how can you write for them?
I completely forgot about the Nathan Fillion fan film. That was terrific. I'll probably give this a watch once it's on VOD, just because I generally like these types of Indiana Jones-esque adventure films. Tom Holland's non-Spider-Man flop streak seems to be continuing though.
Tom tends to be a terrific actor in non MCU movies its just the writing and directors that make the movies fall flat. The Devil All the Time is a great one if you're okay with slower paced movies.
Personally I feel like this is one of the better video game movie adaptations. Enough fan service and homage to the games and yet a fair bit of originality in the characters and story, Not a great Movie but still a fun and enjoyable one.
As much as I loved Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake, I was perfectly fine with just the fan made film. Having a full movie was unnecessary to me whether they used Fillion or not.
The problem with Nathan Fillion playing Nathan is that he’s way too old now. If they had made this movie like 5-10 years ago then it would be great but not now.
I refused to see this movie mainly because I don't want to give movie studios the impression that they can completely miss the mark regarding casting, thereby taking a property many people hold dear, and destroy it all for the sake of that mean green. Uncharted 3 gave us the perfect origin story of Nathan and Sully. It had adventure, tension and heart. Nathan was also much, much younger in their first meeting, which made the encounter that much more touching as a grifting young Nathan finds the father-figure he desperately needs but also someone who will give him the freedom to be himself. But the movie decided to reduce that endearing encounter to the two of them meeting in a bar. But thanks for this review as it confirmed everything I imagined it would be without having to watch it.
As long as it’s a solid 6/10 average action adventure movie, that just so happens to be in the Uncharted movie, I think it’s still going to be a fun enough movie
Saw it last night. I definitely suggest it tbh. Can confirm my hopes. Solid action adventure with the same camp and stereotypes and ridiculousness as National Treasure, not quite as “wow that’s a good film” as Indians Jones, but still better than Indians Jones 4.
@@Archonsx it’s really not that bad though lol As Uncharted, yeah it’s bad but as just generic action movie to sit and eat some popcorn and Milk Duds with, it’s a good time at least. Worth the Monday Night Discount price for sure.
I remember the pulse-pounding action scenes from films like The Spy Who Loved Me--that opening skiing scene, or the scene in one of the Mission Impossible films where Tom Cruise is outside the tallest building around. That is what you miss when everything is CGI. In the back of your mind, you can't forget that there is NO REAL DANGER involved. IF you can't FEEL the danger to the actor, then the character feels as nothing as the CGI is nothing.
while I'm all for not putting actors in real danger for movies (hello, Tom Cruise) I do agree with you. too much CGI just removes all suspension of disbelief, if effects can be reasonably created otherwise then they should do so.
Yeah, he looked like he was phoning it in in the trailers and supposedly he only got that part because he was originally going to be Nathan Drake, but then he got too old so they made him Sully.
For me seeing Tom Holland and Marky Mark as Nate and Sully gave me the same feeling I had watching Tom Cruise play Jack Reacher…they’re just the wrong actors for the rolls, not from a talent perspective mind you, it’s just they don’t embody the characters that we know so well. In spite of that when we finally get Tom throwing on the shoulder holster and hearing the Uncharted theme kick in I couldn’t help but smile. It’s not a perfect transition to the big screen, but I’d totally see the sequel. Also the finale being two 1500s era ships hoisted by helicopters flying through the air is the most video-gamey set piece that you just know came from the cutting room floor of one of the games.
Nathan Fillion and Stephen Lang are and always will be the perfect casting and of course the studio dropped the fuqing ball on that one. No surprise. They should have followed in the footsteps of Deadpool. They released that video on UA-cam a couple years before the movie came out and it pretty much followed that theme. They could have done the same here with that short film in 2018 which I thought was what the movie was eventually going to grow from. But no.
And this is why the first 3 indiana jones movies 🎬 will forever be the only adventure movies for me besides Laura Croft but Indy is who shaped me into wanting to seek adventure. Indiana and the last crusade will always be my favorite.
You know why they cast him? Because hes got 100 million instagram followers and he's hip with the kids. They thought it would be enough to make this movie successful. It wasnt. Nathon Fillion was perfect for Nathan Drake, literally perfect. Missed opportunity
Just as previous coments stated I discovered Jeremy 3 years ago and I haven't missed one since then. I've never found a movie reviewer who's ideas almost always line up with my own and says perfectly how I've felt about particular things. This movie being a huge one. I wasn't on the tom Holland train at all, not for his acting but his look. The Nathan drake I know is a manly man. Idk
This is literally what I was thinking and I haven't even seen it yet. Having played all the games including Lost Legacy I was mostly confused as to why? I mean the games alone are executed so well in story and cinamatic craft why even do this film for any reason other than trying to regurgitate Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as action stars in different roles. The poblem is they're standing before something that was always going to be superior to whatever Hollywood and Fleischer could come up with. They probably would have sold it better had they not youth washed it, casted Nathan Fillion as, "we all know who" and went with a story more canonical to the video games timeline but even that would be very difficult to map out convincingly.
I went in knowing I wasn't going to buy much into the casting and just tried to enjoy the adventure which I did a lot as someone not comparing to the games a whole lot. I knew they were going after a young teen audience and not us gamers that played grew up with Uncharted. I'm not surprised, but also I just thought the directing and script were really tight for a new adventure movie. Miles more entertaining than say the pirates franchise.. Holland and whalberg somehow made me not too upset that they were poor live renditions of the characters in the games but pulled off the fun charm which has a ton to do with their chemistry, personality and script. If Holland had darker features and were a bit taller I'd say he's exactly Nathan Drake as far as everything else he did.
Rumour is that this movie has been in "movie making hell" for 10 years. Mark W was originally signed up to be Drake. But as it's been 10 years and a younger brighter star is about, they kept him on but as Sully.
I think that was the initial premise, plus fans fought to not have Mark Wahlberg play Drake. Although looks wise it would've made sense....he just did so terrible as Max Payne.
I just watched the movie and I think they did a good job of showing the fun action bits from the games but there weren't any of the emotionally hard-hitting bits. For example in the first game when you think sully is dead, or in the second game when you see Nate struggle after the trainwreck. There just weren't any part in the movie where it seemed like Tom Holland's Nathan Drake really struggled. Still I thought it was a lot of fun I would give it an 8 out of 10 and I wouldn't mind seeing more made.
I was just thinking about who might've made a good young version of Nate. Off the top of my head I thought of Evan Peters, perhaps Tye Sheridan or Ansel Elgort? The last two were mainly because of their looks. I feel like Evan has the expressiveness and comedic ability to play Nate. Charlie Cox would be a fantastic older Nate for sure!
None of the names you mention has the mass appeal that Tom Hollands name has. Its NOT about who fits the role better. Its about whats gonna make the most money. Greed over art.
It’s weird, I always felt like the best adventure follow up to Indian Jones hasn’t been in any movies. All the movies that people have grown to like over the years like the Mummy or National Tresure all still live in the looming shadow of Indian Jones and it’s maybe the first Pirates of the Caribbean that comes close. So the best follow up to India Jones hasn’t been in any movies it’s been in video games specially the Uncharted series. Uncharted has enough of it’s own identity beyond just being a video game but also setting the benchmark for action gaming in the future. Given how cenimatic Uncharted is presented in this way this game should be the EASIEST to make an adaptation of! So if there are any real faults the movie has it comes from the same basic problems all video game adaptations have, not respecting the source material enough to understand it! Considering how Hollywood likes to think they know whats best for fans I wouldn’t hold my breath for making video game adaptations great any time soon.
With movies like Wreck it Ralph, Ready Player One and the Arcane series, there should be no excuse for video game related movies to suck or not be great.
It's weird because if they had taken out the Air convoy scene, and replaced the beginning with the actual nate meets sully scene from uncharted 3 but in live action, this movie could have been cannon. The next scene after the intro would be Nate introducing Sam to sully. They could have done a whole cannon trilogy set between drake meeting sully and Sam getting shot. And I honestly think the casting was fine for that.
Thank you Jeremy for your amazing videos. I was a bit worried about this movie cuz it came out of nowhere for me, I’ve hear nothing about it until like a month ago and I saw it as a trailer at the movies. Always liked the idea of an Uncharted movie but have never seen a good way for it to work better than it already does in the game. Nolan North and the Uncharted cast was just too good and so spot on! 😅
Still waiting for the day we actually get video game-based movies from people who actually play video games Uncharted being as predictable and safe as it is is really disappointing considering how they set a high as hell bar for cinematic storytelling in an interactive medium
@@jamaicaqueens22 I thought it was fine. It's a really safe kids film with some nice performances. I personally am tired of the whole "x character finds a portal to Earth" cliche that's been done to death in other adaptations of pre-existing IPs. It also literally doesn't make sense in Sonic's case considering he has been shown to co-exist with humans in Earth-like settings before.
Antonio's character isn't from the game. But he is a combo of Rafe and Roman. The black girl is Nadein and the henchmen from the first game (can't remember his name)
You are half right Jeremy, the entire movie was clearly crafted around the casting of Mark Wahlberg. You must have forgotten that he was originally cast as Nathan Drake but because of a decade of development hell, they opted to move him to the Sully role. Must have been a contract thing. It seems like by miscasting him a second time, they the bent the whole around that mistake. "Well since Sully is younger now, we need to make Nate younger, so who do we have a in our stable of young leading men?" "Tom Holland? Well that's great, everybody loves Tom Holland right?". Then the studio decided to tell the story of how the characters met, but they were too old to directly adapt that story. So then they decided that since they already had to break game canon for that, they may as well just chuck it all. Then with a simple cutting and pasting of a few game elements and Ta-dah! "Kinda, but not really, Uncharted".
I had a blast in the movie although I never played the games, I always wanted to but never got around to it. So going in blind I really liked the characters and the action was super entertaining. I really liked tom Holland and mark wahlbergs chemistry
I have never played an uncharted game so I didn't have that influence going into it that said. I found it to be a fine movie. It was fun. It's not the type of action movie that I'm going to watch over and over again. It was okay. I don't mind that I spent $14 to go see it at an AMC theater but it would definitely be a rent. Don't buy type of thing or see it if it's on the TV channel and you're flipping through and it happens to come on
I started watching Jeremy Jahns in September of last year. It took me three days to watch all of his reviews, and now I never miss one. I legit get excited when he posts now
There is somehow a paradox with videogame movies. Before videogames weren´t enough cinematic to adapt them into movies successfully, but now they are then cinematic enough to need a film adaptation in the first place.
Just saw it. The best video game film made so far. The plot is well-written for video game film standard, and it keeps reasonably within the lore, more or less.
As someone who has never played any of the uncharted games, I can say that I agree it's a pretty good adventure story but it doesn't do anything stand out or unique with the premise
Man. Loving your reviews more and more. Thanks for not shying away from giving your honest opinion and also for not being afraid to critique a movie like some movie reviewers here on YT have become of lately.
it be interesting if Jeremy reviewed The Bridge on The River Kwai Lawrence of Arabia The Good The Bad and The Ugly The Wild Bunch Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid The Godfather The Godfather:Part II Taxi Driver Carrie(1976) The Indiana Jones trilogy Mad Max 2:The Road Warrior Blade Runner Goodfellas Total ReCall(1990) Unforgiven Heat(1995) Casino
About your theory in the begining of the review about how the movie started production!! In fact, the actors actually said this a lot in the interviews for the release of the movie (the biggest one i can think of is the one from BBC Radio 1), but Tom Holland was the one to inspire the story by proposing an origin story for James Bond. It wasn't the best idea for the genre, but the execs at Sony, who had been trying for almost a decade to make an Uncharted movie, realised the process would work only if it were an origin story /inspired/ by the games. Tom Holland was given the role since he is the one which actually gave this old project the boost it needed to become a real thing. So it wasnt about "lets cast a celebrity to make money", it's the main reason the movie got made in the first place!
For years I've watched almost every single review either before or after seeing the film because somehow Jeremy's opinions and mine just match so he's my number 1 trusted reviewer. Also helps to know it'll never be spoiled for me if I want to watch the review before the movie which is usually when I'm less interested in it anyway. For this one it's a shame it's not better but from the moment the casting was announced we knew what it was.

The Tom Holland casting always reminded me of those movies where a certain actor is cast as every lead in every popular movie.
He’s so cool
True. Tom Holland just doesn't suit the character Nathan Drake whatsoever, only reason he was casted because of his popularity nowadays.

Uncharted was literally built as "what if we were playing through those awesome action scenes in movies?"
So an Uncharted movie is just...weird
Maybe the movie is just for people who dont play videogames its for casual movie goers. This could have been better as a tv series just like what they did to the last of us fleshed out the characters just like in videogames
Do you make the movie play as a video game then? Kinda like Free Guy.
@@sakuragi1062 that’s another cool idea too that your bought up, some of these video game movies should be a series instead of a movie
Sounds like they didn't commit to the bombastic set pieces until the very end too so that's a shame.
It’s not like you’re actually playing through the action scenes anyways. It’s just a long series of cut scenes with the occasional quick time event lol.
To be fair, the idea of having the ending being so balls to the walls insane and implausible is very Uncharted.
I remember playing the first game for the first time 🤣🤣 Was not expecting the zombies
To be fairrrr
Kind of like how they waited till now to make a Bioshock movie. A bit late but I'll take it
Honestly, I could see a younger Mark Whalberg playing Nate as well. He was definitely miscast as Sully, though.
Production was set to begin in early 2015. The film was originally scheduled for release on June 10, 2016.

Hell even last crusade mimicked it.
*Ark
No doubt. But it’s always nice to be surprised by a genuinely entertaining movie when you least expect it. The first National Treasure is a prime example. Whenever that movie is on, I always wind up watching it till the end.
My 2 year old loves Indiana Jones. He asks for the truck scene every night before bed. That and the tank scene in last crusade.
I recommend "The Peacock King" if u like Raiders. I believe its a Thai movie. Fantastic tomb crawling adventure flick.

All they had to do was just buy the rights to that and expand it. There was no reason to try some stupid things with ridiculous cast.
Oh, yeah. That’s an instant binge watch for me.
Or so, would've made for a great film, also the Sully casting was brilliant for that short as well
I love Stephen Lang (ol' slang) as much as the next guy but I always picture J.k. Simmons in the role of a live action.
Eh, either way it would come off as a cheap Indiana Jones rip-off.
Nathan Fillion is 1. fat and old now, and 2. not famous outside niche nerd circles so no studio is going to put tentpole money on a film starring him.

He's a fine actor playing the wrong character.
Literally fucking everyone thinks that Holland is miscast
You easily can with 16-18 hours of that gameplay is often just running and shooting and other b.s. the core story can in fact be told in 2-3 hours.
Kudos.
@@IrizIziadAbdullah tbf right, if there was ever a series perfect for being adapted into a generic action movie, it's Uncharted.
This
I agree. These games really do fulfill the cinematic experience now.

I'm so happy that you addressed the Nathan Fillion pilot. The number of the people that I've spoken to have said that he is too old to play Drake which I guess I kind of get but damn it do I believe that he would have been the absolute best casting.

This movie tells me they simply wanted to bring the awesome scenes of the Uncharted games to the big screens. That's it.
And to me that weak AF

Tom Holland looked like a cosplayer who walked on set of the Uncharted movie. The writing was awful. Holland was a bad fit for what was written.
You madafakas never like anything

LMAO that Mark Wahlberg impression dubbed over the video game was hilarious 😂 caught me off guard. Thanks Jeremy!

Casting Mark Wahlberg as Sully of all people should be a criminal offence tbh
But no.
I saw Burt Reynolds as a good older Sully too until he passed away.
Idk
Him and Stuckman are mu go to. I have disagreed only a few times. Been watching them since 2013 💀
Awesome baby fozzy impression snuck in there. I cought that ✌️
This is literally what I was thinking and I haven't even seen it yet.
It's part of Sony's more cohesive strategy to become a media behemoth. It's just a shame they didn't arrive at this point 5/6 years ago
I'd love to see a Katamari Damacy adaptation. It would definitely be interesting.
I pretty much said exactly the same thing to my wife on the way home from the cinema. You nailed this film to a T. Great video mate. 👍
Missed opportunity to cast Jacob Batalon as the bartender on the beac in the Philippines 😂😂
Is it me or does Jeremy seem to be having more fun with the review lately? Love it.
No one’s is going to mention that the real Nathan Drake voiceover character did a cameo on the beach when he said “good luck”.
For me, 6 out of 10 and thats been generous.
This movie was just the start kid they will bond
Awful
Perfect review for this movie! I give your review a 10/10 🍿
Totally agree. When I saw Mark was cast as Sully, I was like “I’m out!” Hard pass.
Bro for real! Mark looks too young to Play him, he was basically playing himself :(
They weren’t too bad
I was just thinking about who might've made a good young version of Nate. Off the top of my head I thought of Evan Peters, perhaps Tye Sheridan or Ansel Elgort? The last two were mainly because of their looks. I feel like Evan has the expressiveness and comedic ability to play Nate. Charlie Cox would be a fantastic older Nate for sure!
I thought Chris Pratt would have been good.
None of the names you mention has the mass appeal that Tom Hollands name has. Its NOT about who fits the role better. Its about whats gonna make the most money. Greed over art.
@@Deeone282 But that's the weird thing though, Tom Holland is popular because of Spidey, but hasn't been so successful in movies outside of Marvel.
@@Deeone282 "Art". It's an action movie based on a video game.
@@winterwolf211 that has to do more with the movies than with his star power.
The fan film was perfectly cast and it was just fun. I’m just surprised Dwayne Johnson wasn’t somehow shoehorned into this movie.
Ugh, Dwayne needs to step back. I just know sooner or later he’ll show up in 75% of theatrical releases. He’s becoming over exposed.
He's probably in the background somewhere. No jungle is safe.

I'm pretty sure that Nathan Drake was originally modeled after Nathan Fililon. So, a fan film made with Him playing Nathan Drake... I mean... Yeah.
Absolutely.
Hard disagree that it'd be easy to adapt to a movie. It's so iconic that there is no way to live up to it as a movie.
With movies like Wreck it Ralph, Ready Player One and the Arcane series, there should be no excuse for video game related movies to suck or not be great.
2 of those arent even adaptations just game cameos. Arcane and Castlevania are the only good game based adaptations.

Your Mark Wahlberg impression is spot on
Thank you Jeremy for your amazing videos. 😅
That Mark Wahlberg impression 🤣🤣
Jeremy also did a impression of Wahlberg when he was cast as Nathan Drake
Still waiting for the day we actually get video game-based movies from people who actually play video games
Uncharted being as predictable and safe as it is is really disappointing considering how they set a high as hell bar for cinematic storytelling in an interactive medium
Sonic was solid to me
@@jamaicaqueens22 I thought it was fine.
Arcane?
Nvm that's a show, angry birds was alright
Yooo wanna hear why I LOVED uncharted? Check out my review!
I still hold onto the theory that this movie was just money laundering by Sony, no one in their right mind will cast Mark for Sully
Antonio's character isn't from the game. But he is a combo of Rafe and Roman. The black girl is Nadein and the henchmen from the first game (can't remember his name)

100% agree with this review!! It does help that you are also looking at it as a fan of the game, like most of us are. Love the review!!
You’ve confirmed my worst fears about this film! Such a tragic waste. True fans of the game knew the casting was way off, too.
Take a risk… I am a fan of the game and liked the movie
I had a blast in the movie although I never played the games, I always wanted to but never got around to it. So going in blind I really liked the characters and the action was super entertaining. I really liked tom Holland and mark wahlbergs chemistry
I have never played an uncharted game so I didn't have that influence going into it that said. I found it to be a fine movie. It was fun. It's not the type of action movie that I'm going to watch over and over again. It was okay. I don't mind that I spent $14 to go see it at an AMC theater but it would definitely be a rent. Don't buy type of thing or see it if it's on the TV channel and you're flipping through and it happens to come on
After his heart attack Antonio looks like he is never going to sleep walk through any of the work given to him. He will give 100% for the dollars.
TOLD ppl that Nathan Fillion shouldve been Drake 🤦🏿♂️

Not having played the games or saw the movie...I can understand the casting of these actors...it actually makes me want to go out and buy the game.
Man. Loving your reviews more and more. Thanks for not shying away from giving your honest opinion and also for not being afraid to critique a movie like some movie reviewers here on YT have become of lately.

Bruce Buffer as Sully and Dean from Supernatural as Nathan is what came to my mind.
