I just found your channel about a week ago and got unreasonably excited to see it's been confirmed a queen lol. Regardless of what happens with her I hope you share an update with us! I binged and love all of your videos but your ant ones are my favorite so far (:

@@HomemadeEcosystems Oh no, I missed it! By the way I am waiting for your mail if you want to read my PhD thesis (if you really feel masochistic enough)
The big pupa in 1:25 is actually becoming a queen. It's probably an indicator that your ant colony is doing too well. In the wild, new queens would usually leave the parent colony to mate and start new colonies. However, the pupa over here would just become an adult and just die, since it serves no purpose in the parent colony.
The Pupae at the start of the video looks like a Princess to me! I might be wrong but that is definitely something i didn't know could happen that quickly.
@@HomemadeEcosystems Yeah, if that is the case she will have wings. There a lot of things that can happen, here are some possibilities: - the princess gives up on trying to mate and becomes a "worker queen" and will have the same job as a worker ant; - the princess will try to simulate a flight in your room (probably wont happen); - or the princess will just die without doing anything.
wow that messor pupa was huge! i think (due to the thorax) it could be an alate, this would be cool but it is still very unlikley due to colony size, ive just never seen a worker or pupa with that big of a thorax, not even a major
I just wanna say*, I love your videos and your humor, i found you by complete chance looking for vivarium related stuff, and some of your methods are definitely.. unorthodox, But they work, and you are practical in the way that you choose to be unorthodox, i just love it, keep up the great work!
hi, at 1:03 those seeds stored in that nest seem to be the trash-pile of your colony. All seeds look opened and eaten already. When a colony is given a too big nest they may use some chambers as garbage rooms.
Hi, that is possible but I don't think so, they store their dead workers and other trash at a corner of the arena but it is possible that they have 2 trash piles. I will have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't mold. Thanks!
04:00 That's also accurate for "when you're old enough to remember being on the toilet when smartphones didn't exist yet". 😂 (I still remember a number I've read on a cleaning product while sitting on the toilet lol)
honestly I'm half convinced they keep some larvae in there because the plastic has that puffed rice larvae aesthetic 👌 (mostly joking, but it's hard not to think. so happy to see a new colony video! :D)
Harvester ants dont need sugars, their diets 75% seeds and the rest is protein from bugs, they need a constant supply of fresh water as they chew up the seeds and mix it with water to make a paste type substance we call “ant bread” which they then feed to the colony. Nice video btw 👍🏻
@@HomemadeEcosystems thats good then :) i hope my comment never came across in a negative manner, that wasnt my intentions i wasnt trying to criticise or say your wrong etc it was just a genuine information comment lol iv been really enjoying your videos and i like your dry humour 😂 keep em coming! I tried to offer my harvesters sugar waters once or twice and they showed no interest in it, only stuck garbage to it 😂
@@NorthernAnts24 Don't worry, I didn't take it as a negative comment ! I appreciate comments like this, always trying to learn 😁 I just figured it won't harm them if I provide them with extra sugar. Glad you like the videos!
i’ve been binge watching your videos and stumbled across your ant series and i’m obsessed. i can’t wait to see where these guys go (wouldn’t mind longer videos either :))
As you can see, for colony 2 the setup couldnt be better, but for the other 2 colonies, its just a too big space, they dont need that much, like colony 1 need one of the nesting space's 1/3, that would be enough, but do what you want, just trying to help
I always comment and ask for longer videos but now knowing you do it all on your phone I won’t ask anymore 🤣 smashing the like button 🙏🏽 If you do this all on your phone imagine what you’re going to be able to do with a proper set up… can’t wait!!
Video suggestion: Make a closed terrarium with ants in there that is big enough to house cycles of nuptial flights. If it is even possible. (Btw loving your vids recently!)
A few ant jokes: Ants always know the way home, they have a great sense of direct-ant. Ants don’t like loud music, it’s too disson-ant. In ant colonies, gossip travels fast - it’s a game of teleph-ant. Ants don’t like candy stores, they find them too sweet. 6. Ants don’t get lost at sea, they’re excellent navig-ants.

Yeah would be very fast, I think she is a very big major but not sure because it is about the size of the queen
@@HomemadeEcosystems Im saying that I think its a princess because of its huge thorax, majors usually dont have dense thoraxes like that
@@gugaxd8568 ow, no clue what I'm supposed to do if it turns out to be a princess. She will have wings right if that is the case?
