- On our way to the Aerostar Owners Association in Tulsa, OK in the fastest light piston twin, the Ted Smith Aerostar 602P/700 with Dick Reese. Ted Smith's #3 hire and next to Ted had more to do with the design of the Aerostar than anyone.
I wish I could've flown with my dad more. He passed while I was trying to complete navy flight school. He may not have been able to pin my wings on my chest, but Im sure he would've been the proudest dad out there.
It is so great that you got the chance to record your Dad's experiences. My Dad is gone now and I wish we had recored more of his life time.
Thanks John, i have recorded a lot of his life and glad I have. I am grateful both Mom and Dad are still doing well at over 90. Healthy physically and mentally, still independent and driving safely.
1973 i was caterpillar salesman for thompson tractor birmingham ala,,,,we had one and a couple of pilots,,,i used it a couple of times to fly prospective customers to peoria for factory tour. Neat plane,,,,fast but not sooo fast that you couldnt get it into some smaller strips that we wanted to visit,,,,,lotsa great memories there,,,thanks

Oh sweet I am from Tulsa and I may have been in the area when you all got together. There are some beautiful Aerostars in Tulsa!! I hope you all get to come back

My father was the Project Engineer for the Wings & Empennage on the Aerostar at Ted Smith in Van Nuys. I remember him walking me through the assembly line on Saturdays when I was about 5-6. He Absolutely Loved that Airplane!
Excellent Document and a piece of American History thank you . Always wanted to fly one of those . Got to fly many pistons turbo props and jets but the Aerostar my old man says it’s a “league of its own “. If I’m ever in Boise I’ll look you up .

Hi; Eric. Just love your channel past owner from Ottawa canada aero star 600A 1977 model. this is one great aircraft, fast, ecomical to maintain, structurally very strong and a dream to fly. have owned many aircraft all very aerodymical such as mooney, twin camanche, several piper senica thought not a clean aircraft and much slower. Of all the aircraft found the aerostar was by far the eastest t fly and land. Keep up the great work was certainly a pleasure to listen to comments on this video from your dad. Christopher

Ahh!! What a fun video. An aviator that did a bit of lot of great flying. Think for me, is that a boy shares Dad.😎. Was an airline guy by now, and a friend told me I might get a ride to my home on an Aerostar, that was a freight carrier. I did get, and what a fun ride. That was in the mid ‘80’s. Thx for the share….
This a very interesting and riveting detailed account of the Aerostar development. I would really like to finish this video but the ATC overlay is super distracting and grating. Can’t do it. Might try to caption it and shut the sound off. Regardless, thank you for sharing. I’m starting some pretty deep learning into the Aerostar and so far you have the best info I’ve been able to find anywhere.
I saw the very first Aerostar when it came out of the back of an industrial building into the parking lot in Northridge CA It was on Winnetka Ave near Nordhoff St I ran home and got my camera and when I came back they ran me off, I hour later tarps were up on the fence line around the parking lot :-)

I love that you haven't polluted that panel with wall to wall glass.
It does need an upgrade. Stuff is starting to become unreliable.
I used to work on Aerostars. Do you know how happy I am that I can say "used to?" Every time I worked on the engines, I wanted to take a hack saw to those damned cowling supports that covered the rocker box covers.

Rufe Amis and Ted Smith tried to contract with my dad to distribute Aero Commanders in South America he always regretted that job.
I flew bank mail in a Ted Smith Aerostar.. Battery in the way back.. 250 kts in descent.. Controllers always asking me.. What I was... They thought a turbine or jet powered machine
a new nickname, "5x ones", that's better than "whole lotta ones."

I have an original Ted Smith 600 that is mothballed for the last 8 years. This inspires me to fly it!
Can you share what system you have that gives the altitude call outs? Very nice.
The callouts are from the Sandel and radar altimeter. You should either bring your 600 out of mothballs or sell it to someone who will restore and get it flying again.
It’s fully restored and arguably one of the nicest 600’s. If you’re ever at Aerostar ask Jim to show it to you.

I’ve owned N2PB for over 35 years. On my second TBM which is an amazing plane.
Not sure I could ever part with the Aerostar.
Also Can you Tell owners of the Difference between fist Batch Aerostars with Ryan wings as opposed to piper wings.

Driving the gear thru the wings,During certification demonstration To the feds,Resulting in the awareness of the need to cram 540s in those small holes.Also I worked 20 some odd years for Don Smith at Aerostar World In Dothan Ala.He worked with Ted.Smith.Does your Dad recall Don?
That was Boyd Lydick. I was around but only about 11 years old and don't remember anything specific. Basically. Boyd found out what happens when you get too slow on final with full flaps at about 13' off the ground.
Noise cancelling for the Camera would be awesome to take out that horrible squeal. I love this place so much, but that squeal makes it really hard to stay with you. :(
I have been trying to get ride of that alternator whine for 5 years. Both alternators have 500 hours on them and this has been going on since before our ownership with different alternators. When both Alternators are shut off, the whine goes away. Can't run that way for long though :). If anyone has any ideas, I would love to hear them.
Eric, your alternator whine is much like that faced by ham radio operators in their mobile (car/truck) installations. Some also have aeronautical mobile (aircraft) installations. I suspect a highly experienced ham could be of assistance. A local (Atlanta, GA) ham I know does aero mobile. I can ask him about this if you can’t find a local ham. PM me if I may be of assistance.
