Great Lesson! Love this teaching style. I'm not used to seeing you break down and explain the riffs. You do a super job and great song selection. Perfect project for me to work on today. Thanks for this.

Fantastic work as usual Tom. I just came across the Leonid and Friends version of this song and was really impressed with their work. I immediately thought I bet you had done this one as well, and sure enough! I was never a huge Chicago fan but now appreciate their musicality. I read somewhere that even Hendrix spoke glowingly of Terry Kath and that he rated him better than himself!
3 cheers to you though mate. You have been putting up fantastic content for over a decade now.......and we’re loving it!

Yes; finally something you can follow and learn from without all the drone boring commentary. I like it!

@@LEADSOLO I don't have your expertise, but I'll take this as an invitation and give it a try.
Terry Kath had a bottomless pocket of creativity and talent. Listen to various live performances of any song, and I doubt you'll ever hear Terry play it the same twice, unlike many performers.
This solo is classic Terry. At least two things are going on. On the one hand, over and over (but different every time), he goes up the scale, then down the scale, then back up. At the same time, the pace, feel, and intensity of the solo increases through to the end's climactic final high-notes. It starts with those unforgettable single building notes, and then simply increases in complexity and intricacy, eventually bringing in the dimension of Terry's beloved wah-wah, mounting to a really intense end.
That's my best effort off the top.
If you ever care to hear what I think is an amazing performance, spotlighting all of Terry's skills, listen to the live version of "It Better End Soon," from their Carnegie album. Pick out the guitar, the lead and the strumming. It truly is like Terry is scoring a movie. It's in five movements:

      ua-cam.com/video/3M5E5cFc2YI/v-deo.html
      You'll thank me. (I hope.)
Then if you want I'll show you one where he comes as close to playing lead, and rhythm, and singing - AT THE SAME TIME - as can be done.

Agree with some others below, Terry used an SG (and a strat) on the first several albums. I have an SG and when I play it thru a Pig nose amp....I would bet my bottom dollar that is exactly what he played this song on. Staying on the bridge PU, amp up all the way, cut the guitar volume to half...that is the intro and rhythm part, then for lead part wing it all full open....let me know what you think.

Man, they just don't make licks like this anymore. I can remember listening to my AM Transistor radio on those summer days of the late 60s to mid 70s when so many bands were pumping out top 10 hits like cars on a GM assembly line. And not just one hit wonders. Chicago was one of the hit maaskers and they really rocked when they were Chicago Transit Authority. Todays music they don't even play instruments. It really sucks that people think rap and hip-hop bullshit is music. Anyone can talk fast like ghetto punks and call it music. It's trash at best.

Who else plays this lick? Zeppelin? It’s been driving me crazy.

    • @LEADSOLO

Well basically the lick is very common in classic rock. So I can't think of an exact copy out there by someone else... But so many artists use these basic bends and techniques on the pentatonic scale ... And you're right Jimmy Page probably played them as much as anyone

The intro is done with octaves he does not play the 5th

    • @LEADSOLO
      @LEADSOLO  4 роки тому

Yeah I actually show it with Octaves on the lesson I sell. I didn't think that was really relevant to this lick.

Your fingering is inconsistent and hard to follow.
