First time I’ve seen somebody go in depth like this into what it’s actually like to own one of these outside of just banging gears fast, love the insight!
Thanks for watching!
HI! I also drive a dog box in my Ford Escort Cosworth. I installed it three years ago and the first time I made a gear change while accelerating I was in disbelief at its speed. My car is not a racing one but a road one. It's not easy to use it like a synchromesh and you always have to know what you're doing, you always have to be focused and that's why it's wonderful! Going slowly, I use a different technique to change up: I press the clutch, move the gear lever to neutral and wait an instant for the primary shaft to slow down, then quickly engage the higher gear; this way three times out of four you don't even hear your teeth chattering. To downshift, always when I'm going slowly, I instead do the classic one-two punch to match the revs: down the clutch, gear lever in neutral, up the clutch, hit the accelerator, down the clutch and engage a lower gear; even so you can downshift without any teeth chattering. When going fast, however, I always use the clutch and engage the gears, both up and down, as quickly as possible: I tried to do the flat gear shift without the clutch but it doesn't feel instinctive and it makes the car make a lot of jolts!😟 At the time everyone told me not to install it because it is a gearbox that is unusable on the road and that those few who had installed it after a few months had removed it out of desperation, but I was too eager to try it and so after a year of evaluations I I got it and have been using it ever since and have never regretted it and will never go back to synchromesh again! If you are a mechanical fanatic, if you don't care about comfort, if you enjoy dominating your car, if you are willing to make some small sacrifices then the dog box is the best gearbox in the world! 😃 It's the only one capable of making you feel like an active part of your car! I am 100% convinced of my choice and I wonder why the manufacturers don't install it directly on very sporty cars, perhaps as an optional extra. Those who speak badly of the dog box are simply because they have never used it and speak from hearsay; 🤫🤐they are not really passionate about mechanics and want everything to be easy, without commitment, without understanding how things work, without making any sacrifices... they are the right customers for electric cars!😉
Thank you for this amazing story
I love the sound of it
You are my hero Shawn! 😍
Why does your shifter look like a dirty Hitachi wand?
You need to settle down

Wish I kept the R154 out of my first Supra. Nothing else felt like that transmission. Cool vid.
I'm torn. I have a broken sr20. I desperately want a 2j but it seems so bad ass you never get to really open it up
Good video keep it up, i got a ppg dog box in my evo kinda scared too street drive it since i want to it last and its not cheap to fix lol maybe ill just send it see how long it does last, maybe make a video on it cause theres not much information on dogboxs / street driving / long jevity kinda, im sure it'll be fine tho since i know how to drive an probably wont beat on it to hard for a while till i get a lil more comfortable with the dogbox. Probably not gonna no lift to shift to save my dogs 😂 maybe some day tho lol just more curious on how long they last im sure if you dont totally beat on it itll fine/last but also have heard they last about half the life of a normal synchronize transmission guess we'll see haha
Bro is the highstrung of street cars... if ya know ya know.
killer vid man.
😂
Sick asf I’m in trade school for welding planning to be like you😎🔥❤️🔥
How many miles have you had this dog box for? How long do you expect it to last? Also, what's the plan when you do have to rebuild the gears (if you do have to do it)
Wut the behell is a chicken power bowl?
Idk how I got here but since I’m doing the whole “I’m mid 30s year old with home ownership issues” and zero projects of my own at moment I’m here to stay for show now😅🫡 great content sir
😂😂😂 Welcome to the family
Can you make a video of it during rush hour traffic? Badass fucking car btw
Can you use a stock clutch for this set up or do you need a twin plate?
Im going for t5 dogbox setup but need some help thank you
Clutches are necessary for power figures. You can use whatever clutch you want
Can i use it on a fwd street car?
Awesome car man! What kind of alluminium rods do you have in it? And what pistons C/R etc?
R&R, induction performance diamon 10:1
@@RabidJzNice, what kind of gearset you running in the box? Or is it custom
Bit clunky and oldschool compared to current trans swaps.
8hp trans is what everyones swapping to now. Smooth fast and holds power. Can be driven with a clutch too!
Jz though dam mint sounds!
We just pretend you didn't run a redlight 😅
Actually, i was in the intersection when it was Yellow lol
Where did you buy your dogbox gear set and how much was it? been trying to find one but they are 6k to 9k new
Pgs Transmissions.
@@RabidJz do you need a retune when you go to a dogbox? or is it just a straight drop in?
Would double clutching help to stress the dogbox less?
Theres no point in double clutching.
I actually find pausing in neutral to make "no clunk" shifts
In theory yes. But not needed
People always hating.
What trans is this?
R154
