It's really funny that not knowing much about a quarterstaff, it was my hypothetical weapon of choice and I always got made fun of because of it. Respect the stick, friends.
It's so true. And it's so wonderful to see how much of the footwork and the methods of "controlling the line" translate to my fencing training from years ago and how so much of the technique translates so effortlessly over to other weapon systems. Its like if you master the quarterstaff, you almost automatically have a leg up on other fighting styles. No wonder Silver and Swetnam, among others, called it the greatest of the melee weapons.
Knowing that I could have killed my friends with the metal-capped painters' stick I carried around as a kid while pretending to be a mage is a retroactively terrifying thing
just wanted to say this even though its an old comment. a painters stick probably wouldn't have done the job unless it was a hardwood, and not that cheap wood they use for most handles. you certainly would have hurt them, but a firm strike is just as likely as snapping the stick, so don't feel too bad!
If your quarter staff is adorned with an appropriately sized copper pipe coupling, one epoxied on each end of the staff it is still light, but the staff won’t split, splinter or wear down on the end. Plus, the end packs a much more robust striking end that leaves a memorable impression on whatever gets schwacked.
+ Eric Schwab What you say is true - only issue would be for people living in countries where weapons are restricted. If you have something that looks like a weapon the police will confiscate it. So a piece of heavy dowel does not look like a weapon unless you put the metal ferrules on each end.
This is the best quarterstaf hema introduction video I've found on UA-cam. Teaching to some real students, who would question stuff and ask for explanations, as well as showing the two people drills really helped structuring the lesson in a way that makes sense. Liked it.
You guys did this way better than Mattpat. He went to a stunt coordinator, and probably would have been better off not learning anything. But you guys actually went to a HEMA instructor and learned proper combat techniques. Good on you.
29:27 The extended range quarterstaves and spears provide is why they were such great weapons at the time. So simple, but if well mastered, they can prove to be a huge problem to the enemy.
"Students, who was the greatest blademaster?" "Jaerom, Gaidin" "Yes, Jaerom. He defeated a thousand masters in one on one combat. He was defeated only once. By a farmer wielding a quarterstaff. Remember what you saw here today." And I think that's the part in WoT where Mat cemented his place as my favourite. Quarterstaffs wreck.
“Hammar moved to stand beside Galad, still groaning on the ground and trying to push himself up. The warder raised his voice to shout, “Who was the greatest blademaster of all time?’ From the throats of dozens of students came a massed bellow. “Jearom, Gaidin!” “Yes!” Hammar shouted, turning to make sure all heard. “During his lifetime, Jearom fought over ten thousand times, in battle and single combat. He was defeated once. By a farmer with a quarterstaff! Remember that. Remember what you just saw.” During his lifetime, the greatest blademaster fought over ten thousand times, in battle and single combat. He was defeated once. By a farmer with a quarterstaff! When I read that I thought it was interesting. Then I went on UA-cam and saw there were videos of staff ( or spear) vs sword and saw it was true. Matt, by far was the most interesting character.
There's a saying in the book series "The Wheel of Time" that the greatest swordsman will lose every time to a farmer with a quarterstaff (i.e. a competent quarterstaff wielder).
Carson Rush It doesn't say that, it says that the only time one of the greatest swordsman in recorded history lost a fight was to a peasant with a quarterstaff.
Love the video guys! In a world of cool swords, shields, and other blades, the Quarter Staff is almost always overlooked and underappreciated. It's just ironic that it is one of the most universally effective melee weapons ever. Lots of cultures figured out how effective the "big stick" was and adopted it. In Japanese and HEMA fencing, I have always had such a hard time fighting quarterstaff fighters with a sword. Cheers.
Day 100: The "mead" has been sitting in the dark again. It has started making strange noises at night and I swear I have heard. 'Father' more then once. If only the Modern Rogue would make a part two of their damn video so i can silence the creature! Oh shit....I think i smell honey again.....
Alpha_Anti Gaming I made a batch of mead about twenty five years ago. I used 25 pounds of Colorado wildflower honey and claret yeast for a five gallon batch. It took about five years after bottling before the taste was what I considered good to excellent. My friends beg me to bring bottles of that mead to holiday parties. I’m down to the last four champagne bottles. I don’t know what was going on in the bottles with that mead, but if your mead is nasty, don’t dump it. Just let it be and it will work through it’s issues on it’s own. Honey is too expensive and precious these days to be wasted.
Quarterstaves! Awesome! No one uses these in D&D because they use those awful double-ended weapon rules for some reason. See if you guys can check out someone who knows bojustu (the Asian martial arts style) - that's the one where you hold it in the middle, if I remember correctly.

there is a difference between Quarterstaff and Bo Staff, Quarterstaff were used by the english and bo staff, chinese. Bo staff are smaller, typically shorter than their user and are usually held in the middle or in the case of two hands at every quarter. Quarterstaffs (Quarterstaves) were used more like clubs. usually as tall or taller than their user and held with both hands at one end. basically a cheap alternative to a mace or warhammer for anti-armor purposes, and they had thicker stock with heavier hardwood.
Mittens That's strange, I would have sworn that there was more than one grip and that there are more than just strikes in quarterstaff.....must have been a fever dream, and not lessons at a club.....

as a man who has trained with the quarterstaff from the age of seven i can say that this is some of the slowest and well thought out training i've ever seen. i'm very impressed. i learned form a teacher who would drive us. i've had many injurys because i learned with focus on power and seed. this is way batter training. slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

This is my favorite martial arts weapon, I won second place with a quarterstaff in weapons division state championship. Really want to learn how to use the sai though
I can see movements from AC Unity when using a long-range weapon. One finisher is underhand to head, overhand to chest, then using your shoulder & a spin, 360 swing into the guy’s head
Being in San Antonio im real close to yall. Im pretty sure ive heard an explosion from yalls place all the way down here. Krull has visited also with gi joe and the black panther
Matrim Couthan from The Wheel of Time series. Took out two experienced swordsmen with a quarterstaff while he was recovering from a severe case of being cursed. He could barely stand and still won.
Staffs and Spears* are my 2 favorite types of weapons and yet some of the most underappreciated. I would love a video on 2 handed/shield and spear fighting, even if it isn't as complex and exciting. *maces are cool too, nothing beats a good skull clunk. :P
Ask Richard Peeke... Despite being wounded twice, he used a staff to fend off three swordsmen quite happily. He was a fairly low-average fighter of the time.
Yall should ask to have a cutting lesson, there's actually a lot that goes into making a good cut, and then you can do the final test with some of those Jason heads you learned how to make earlier.
Jason Murphy look up "2016 longpoint cutting finals" on UA-cam to hype yourself up. There's some amazing cutting feats done in there. The video by scholagladatoria is probably the best
Skallagrim did a great video covering fighting a quarterstaff with various weapons and other things, and, trying to straight-up block it...bloody impossible.
Poor Jason. Abused co-host. The screaming Jason gif came to mind when he got nailed... Hope you get a hazard pay bonus, Jason. **tips hat to a brave brave man**
Thanks for your answer ! I believe it's called Historical Medieval Battle in english, it's basically a fighting sport where the fighters bash eachothers wearing medieval armours and melee weapons. A lot of fun ! There's an american team, too. ua-cam.com/video/Amrf-aYs4MM/v-deo.html
Quarter staff fighting is fun as fuck, just hurts when you get hit. And I’ve never used one that thick because I’ve never been in an actual combat situation. Hahaha

YEEEEAAH!
*Drinks krunk juice before riding off on a mystical dragon*
EDIT: It needed something. Sorrynotsorry.
This made me happy
HAHAHAH the video game cheat code was gold
Why hasnt the modern rouge liked this comment yet
couldve stayed within the general concept of the chappelle show skit, where at the very end he flawlessly articulates a complex sentence out of nowhere, just to show that he could at any moment if he so chose.
only to then finish up with OKAAAYYY! once more -.-
I wish I seen Brian teach fire confidence and the ballistics training when I was active duty in Army. THese guys can contribute to joe-proofing oursoldiers and first line responders!
'Use the force Luke... I've ran out of lubricant.'
Martin_ Leong
im not sure we are talking about wheel but sure
Hello Frankie Doyle.
This is great! More MR, more Anthony, more medieval whoop ass lessons!
I wonder what other weapons you could do. There's been the long sword, sword and shield, roundel, and now this.
Chet McGovern I’m sure we can come up with more with AHWG.
as a man who has trained with the quarterstaff from the age of seven i can say that this is some of the slowest and well thought out training i've ever seen. i'm very impressed. i learned form a teacher who would drive us. i've had many injurys because i learned with focus on power and seed. this is way batter training. slow is smooth, smooth is fast.
"slow is smooth. smooth is fast."
I like that. I don't think enough people appreciate that sort of sentiment.
m.ua-cam.com/video/xz3PbpPR6DY/v-deo.html
Glad to hear it!
There’s a reason why blunt weapons and polearms were so popular in medieval warfare
Still need to see them do Messer and rapier
MetalViking Don't worry, it's on the list. Saber might be, too.
Austin Historical Weapons Guild Polish Saber? * hopeful *
Rondel + ringen
We haven't started it yet, but we're looking to start playing with something in July or August as schedule allows. We'll have to see what we stumble into.
Yes! Yes! I've been hoping for a quarterstaff episode! Thank you Modern Rogue!
Caitlin Jane Enjoy!
Well you could call it “the stick of truth”
transmet reference?
@@janome
No, South Park game reference
"Just grab a big stick and hit people with it." bursted out laughing that was great
Just waiting for a new member ask "Why does my mask smell like watermelon..?"
LOL Special wash. I hear it is 99.99% effective against covid...due to the distance rules.
I made a character who uses a quarterstaff. They can also use advanced lightning magic. Pretty scary combination.
You guys are flipping awesome. I'd love to see more software/hardware security stuff - maybe an episode on wireless hacking and software-defined radios. Also, if you guys ever need a Senior Software Engineer well-versed in pretty much anything related to software, let me know :P
I've been waiting so long for another Medieval Rogue video! Glad to see you guys back in the historical weapons guild
This is my favorite martial arts weapon, I won second place with a quarterstaff in weapons division state championship. Really want to learn how to use the sai though
A couple of times during your drills if you were to freeze frame you two are the spitting image of the manuscripts. You guys have a good teacher.
Awwwww no twirling and twisting? D&D has lied to me...
The first thing I tell my students, if you twist your hands, you die.
look at the Asian stile for that.
Now if you do sais, you will have done all the Ninja Turtles' weapons. I mean, if we count the paper nunchakus...
wanpakudanpu I have some sais!
I keep recognizing the chillhop songs and it makes me love this channel more!
Does the modern rogue love me?
Jay Quek Yes.
You know it.
* blushes *
It Is decidedly so
This thread is so wholesome I literally said “awww” when I saw the first two replies were Jason and Brian
I'm so glad UA-cam recommended this video. I'm writing a character whose main weapon is a staff, so this is extremely useful for me.
Staffs and Spears* are my 2 favorite types of weapons and yet some of the most underappreciated. I would love a video on 2 handed/shield and spear fighting, even if it isn't as complex and exciting.
*maces are cool too, nothing beats a good skull clunk. :P
Xavier H. All of that would be so fun.
My question is, how does a quarterstaff do vs someone with a quick sword and shield
Ask Richard Peeke... Despite being wounded twice, he used a staff to fend off three swordsmen quite happily. He was a fairly low-average fighter of the time.
29:30 - 29:41 Probably why the Polearm dominated the battlefield and swords were the backup.
I'm loving all the HEMA stuff you guys do
Ho! Ha ha! Guard! Turn! Parry! Dodge! Spin! Ha - thrust!
yalls should do halberds next. It's sorta like a sword taped on to a quarterstaff
Jason: *Switches to Darth Maul stance*
Also Jason: *Immediately gets stabbed in the balls*
This is probably the coolest channel in existence I’ll be honest.
Lil' Jon fighting with a staff would be epic.
Thanks!
Yall should ask to have a cutting lesson, there's actually a lot that goes into making a good cut, and then you can do the final test with some of those Jason heads you learned how to make earlier.
Laflen Kenway I definitely want to do that.
Jason Murphy look up "2016 longpoint cutting finals" on UA-cam to hype yourself up. There's some amazing cutting feats done in there. The video by scholagladatoria is probably the best
Jason Murphy Just say the word and we can make it happen.
I just subscribed! You guys are great! I really appreciate the sense of humor involved.
Awesome! Thank you!
You forgot robin from *teen titans*
King Ugandan knuckles Awwww man. How could I forget him??
And Gambit from X-Men (sort of)
Not to forget about Sun Wukong and Son Goku
@@theghoulishdude6421 to be fair, the god Sun Wukong predates English quarterstaves by ~200 years.
Aang from avatar the last airbender shorta sure it's a flying stick but still a stick
Skallagrim did a great video covering fighting a quarterstaff with various weapons and other things, and, trying to straight-up block it...bloody impossible.
This man, is the perfect human being, he knows how to use weapons *AND* make mead?
"Actually, it's a BUCK & A QUARTER quarter staff, but I'm not telling HIM that!" - Daffy Duck
Poor Jason. Abused co-host. The screaming Jason gif came to mind when he got nailed... Hope you get a hazard pay bonus, Jason. **tips hat to a brave brave man**
Eh. I'm resilient. :)
I was so happy to see someone mention Kilik. Always loved the quarterstaff thanks to him
been waiting for this video
I always come back to episode just to reply the opening. That 'Little John/ Lil' Jon' joke was gold man!
Those episodes on martial arts are fantastic ! Do you plan to make one on buhurt ?
I'm unfamiliar with that one!
Hahaha
If you guys only made combat and drink mixing videos, I would be in heaven lol thanks for the video boys!
You got it, boss!!
I made my own staff and practice for fun and excersise. Your video is encouraging to bump things up even more!
