  • Apple's new 15 inch MacBook Air may be using older parts but it's finally fulfilling the need of something Apple has lacked in its laptop lineup forever, an affordable 15 inch laptop that should probably end up being the new default laptop purchase for most Mac users... except there are sometimes where maybe you shouldn't buy it.

The majority of users don’t need hdmi. Same with the RAM but it would be ideal if Apple included 16gb as the base.

I did exactly what you described - I bought this 15 inch Air with upgraded 16GB Ram. I then bought a USB4 external enclosure and a 2TB Samsung 980 - so have a 2TB external for the same price as going from 256GB to 512GB. I have only had it for about 2 weeks, but love it so far.

Thanks for this helpful review. I'm considering my very first Macbook after using Chromebooks for a bunch of years and this one really appeals to me. Most of the reviews of this focus mainly on how it's not as good as a Macbook Pro and I don't care that it's not as good, I don't need that much power. I think the base model of this will be enough power for me.

I got myself the 15 Air with 24GB RAM and 256 SSD, the reason why I went with the configuration is cause I use a gaming monitor as a 2nd Monitor display which can use significant energy when I have 2 windows open on an browser so that extra RAM is very useful and there is NO alternatives for extra ram while I do have a 5TB external hard drive which there is many alternatives and having a bigger screen on the MacBook Air for less then 2000 bucks is just insane value. I was thinking at a Pro version at first but just to have the 14 M2 Pro is already 2000 bucks + tax and I don’t really need the HDMI port since I already have a USB Hub, overall I love the portability of the MacBook Air 15 and upgrading it from my Intel 2020 MacBook Air is a huge Win for me! Especially adding the Educational Pricing Discount!

It's from the PWM the mini-LEDs use to modulate brightness. Some users (like myself) are quite sensitive and literally cannot use devices with PWM comfortably. The 15 in does not use PWM. Neither does the M2 13 inch. Every other apple laptop for the last 6 years besides those use PWM.

I have a old 2015 15 inch Macbook Pro with the Radeon dedicated graphic card 16gb of ram 2.5ghz cpu. I was just wondering how would this Air match up to it in editing 8 bit 4k30. I edit once a week a 1 hour long video; basic the only thing I do is backgrounds, titles, and dissolves with slight color corrections. Rendering generally takes around 21/2 to 31/2 sometimes to render out a video( Using Final Cut). How do you think the 15 inch Macbook Air would fair with the same tasks and maybe bumping up to 10 bit. I remember when I purchased my current laptop I paid like $1300 for it, used, off Amazon back in 2017. Do you think I would be ok getting the Air for what I do versus paying the 2 grand for the 14 inch Macbook Pro?

The real struggle is picking between the Air 15" fully loaded and a base Pro 16" (M2 or M1 Pro). In most cases, it's not easy to find a M1 Pro at a good discount (if you're outside the US) and the jump towards the M2 Pro is quite big. However, the better screen, speakers and overall performance are pushing me towards the Pro 16". At the same time, the Air screen is not as "stable" as the Pro one... Any M1 or M2 device can handle hobby level and even intermediate level 4k editing pretty well. It's only once you get up dealing multi-cam footage, heavy effects work, or doing big exports that you'll want to start looking at the Pro devices. Not because of the chip itself, but because of the cooling. Basically, if the computer is not going to be running at 100% CPU for several minutes at a time, it'll probably be fine.
That's the cool thing that Apple did with their M chips - there really is no "low end" M chip, they start out pretty darn good.

      @wakeupcall2665 Рік тому +1

Why should he? This product is for people who do NOT need all those ports, but really want a bigger screen, like me.
I never ever hook my MacBook to an external screen. Otherwise I would get a MacMini. I simply need a good sized screen and MacOS. I don’t need a massive SSD as I have already external storage at home, with back up.
The user base for the pro series is different in reference to what they need and want to do with their machines.
The Air, both sizes, are incredibly portable and light weight. Perfect for when I travel. And I travelled a lot since 1993!
So you see, your comment is just an assumption of what you think Apple is doing here.
Of course, everybody is different. But techno’s so advanced these days, that the top end products are not necessary anymore. And Apples OS‘s across the board are a huge argument for that! Food for thought, right?
BTW flexing with the most expensive is so 2009. And that you can afford something doesn’t mean you have to buy it.

Never have I seen UA-camrs get so excited about such an ordinary piece of tech. This is literally the most disappointing release of 2023.

Looking at many Windows reviews and most are sponsored as they are so boring upgrades that YT creators would not bother if they were not paid by Windows OEMs. It is a laptop, a mature market. What are you expecting in this sector. Boring is now the new good as we are just getting refinement to what we have.

@@andyH_England plenty of innovation out there if you take a look, from LG, Asus and others. This is literally JUST a bigger screen and YT's are jizzing all over it with excitement.

@@shaun1900 there are some freaky looking niche designs that have the wow factor when released but soon become a waste of money and no one buys them. Next year. Laptops have matured and the best design is simplicity and user efficiency. That means for vast the majority, the MacBook Air 15 is a beast and easily the best ultrabook in the world at the moment.

Apple silicon is amazing. This is only the second generation of a monumental chip change and most Mac users are still on an older intel machine. What's not to get excited about?

@@GregsGadgets bigger screen size does not excite me. If Mac air going to be a portable device they should’ve made it touchscreen and this is the only thing that can make me excited I’m still using my iPad Pro. It’s a great computer can almost do everything what I want to do it is very portable.

"We all know the MacBook would break from this height"
Pathetic. A Nokia would break the floor instead.
