I made this video because I purchased some yarn from the thrift store. and it smelled a little dusty. I wanted to show you how to take care of yarn, that might be dingy, dusty, or stinky. You can absolutely wash yarn before you use it! and if it helps you save money, or helps you save a poor helpless skien of yarn, that just wants to be loved. Then my job will be done.
THanks for watching!

I just bought a bunch of yarn from the 60s so this is really helpful!
The secret to getting odors out of fabric or yarn is salt and Suave Rosemary Peppermint shampoo. Mix the salt, vinegar, baking soda, and the shampoo, then soak, and hand rinse it thoroughly until no more suds ☮️🌈💖 hope this helps 😊
@@terrace1 Thanks! 🙏
I've gotten "cat" out of yarn, I used a oxygenated cleanser specifically for that purpose...... I actually dropped it in a sink of warm water with one of the Jackson Galaxy tablets (that was meant to go into a spray bottle), it was amazing!!! 😉
And there was no staining....
Lysol Laundry Sanitizer worked for me.
@@jseidel70js BINGO!
Going to have to get me a swift. I showed this to my son... and started the sentence, If you'd help.. that's all I got out... he goes help how? So, I put out my arms and explained how... Then was informed that I MUST be out my mind! Then he tells me, to go get a salad spinner and he'd hook it up to a drill for me LMAO! I ended up wiping my eyes here from tears from laughter... and he went off shaking his head! Thanks for this one, now I see what and why, about undoing the yarn and getting all the parts to the air and water/soap.
🤣🤣🤣
That is an Amish swift, I have one, love it.
Add a half a cup of vinger get out smoke
I used knee high stockings to put cakes in. They came with a smell I didn't like. I tied the cake tight in the stocking and laundered gently and let air dry. I cut the stocking off when they were dry.
so helpful and i love that you are so open with us

Thanks Jennifer. This is something we needed. At least, us that have bought thrift store yarn.
What a great idea Jennifer. Thanks for the scoop on this. Good to know. Have a great day. Donna 💙❤💚

Thanks for sharing this Jennifer. 💜
Nice video. Thank you. Plants are nice.
Thank you😁💜🧶 I have some yarn that I need to wash. Thank you for showing us!
So much better than washing in a net bag! It took me days to untangle that yarn!
Loved watching you clean that yarn. Looks easy enough to do and you rescued yarn from being thrown away! Bless you! Now, take little man to get something to eat.🍽🥘🍲🥗😀
Great tips, thank you so very much!! Got a bunch at an estate sale
Thank you, Jennifer. It was very entertaining. ☺♥☺♥☺
Really enjoyed this video and learned so much. Thank you for taking the time to show us less advanced. Blessed day to you.🐦
Thanks for sharing. Helpful information.
Thanks that knowledge will come in handy for yarns I was given, and any I might get in future from thrift stores. Have a great day..
Great tip. Thank you, Jennifer.
Wonderful tutorial.... definitely will try this now that the warmer weather is here....love drying outside...reminds me of growing up way back when.... 😂👍😘
Love these helpful tips for cleaning yarn... Thank You for taking the time to put this video together!
You and many others probably already know and use this trick... But just in case... I have a large yarn stash that I’ve put into totes to “keep it safe” . One thing that I have found works very nicely is every time I place yarn into a tote the first thing I put into my tote is a couple of dryer sheets. Then I put a couple more when it’s half full and then a couple more when it’s completely full. I’ve found that this not only prevents the yarn from getting that “old” smell but it also helps to keep bugs away 🙂
Great video learning something new and fun
Jennifer thanks for sharing. Have a joyful day 🌷🤗💕
Thank you for this very helpful lesson, Jennifer! I also was helped by seeing you use the swift and the way you tied each hank. What a gorgeous pink cotton you rescued! My college roommate lives in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where the statue of the fisherman is. Gloucester is pronounced “Gloss-ster”. I am looking at 2 large containers of different kinds of yarn I have owned for a very long time. They definitely will need renewing and washing before I can use them. I love how you don’t just talk about helpful tips, you SHOW us!!! And that cool spinner hack is fun! Thank you again!
Gloucester sounds like “glaw ster”. It’s here in Massachusetts 😀
In the UK we say glos -stir, I find the different pronunciations really interesting
@@annehayward3506 we actually say “glaw-sta”. Ha ha it’s a New England accent kinda thing.
Great tutorial! I have some yarn that got a little dark on one side and I can’t wait to try this and see if it’ll work for me. Much appreciated! ❤️😍🥰💕
🎶🎶salad spinner!🎶🎶
Thank you for this. I am a newbie, but have passed on "iffy"used yarn because I wasn't sure what to do with it. ❤️
Good morning Jennifer. That was very helpful advice. I have a ball winder, but want to get a swift. Guess that will be my next new item. I really appreciate your input on things. Thank you. Hugs from Arkansas.💖💕🦋
Thanks for the tutorial on this. Good to know.
Good info. Vinegar is so useful. - Paula
Excellent!! Thank you for this Jennifer. I have a mountain of older yarn in my mothers house. It's daunting. I have a mesh bag and kept meaning to try that. This makes more sense to aereate the fibers.
Great video tutorial! Thanks
Thanks for the information on this, it's very helpful. Hugs and loves my friend. Toodles for now.
Hi! Jennifer, that was another great tutorial for getting out odor. Improvise is the name of the game when you don't have it. It is a ling process as I watched grandma clean and prepared sheep wool to weave beautiful rugs. Have a blessed day!
You are a cutie!!! Thanks for the great video...watching you made my day:) The cat pee part was hilarious!
Great lesson. Thanks
thank you for sharing Jennifer. I have "gifted" yarn that is aged and very musty, dusty smelling. glad i hadn't thrown it out!!
Thanks very helpful. I had bought some variegated. cotton yarn rainbow color from Hobby Lobby and made coadters with it to use when your glass sweats it faded on my outside while table and it was new yarn. I have several of them not used I will do this to them. Thanks ⚘for sharing with all of us 🧶💕🧶
I love this! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this technique.
Thank you for your awesome ideas!
Thanks for the great information. I need this. 😇
Great information, Jennifer. I would not have thought to put yarn back into hank form to treat it but it makes sense. I'm sure this video will save many a skein from the landfill .
Oh thank you. I bought some yarn form a thrift store some time ago and I have never use it because it has that weird smell of old yarn. It was packaged up in a plastic blanket bag with very old vintage yarn and the smell of that yarn got of everything. There are some skeins I would love to use if I can get the smell out. I'm going to try some of the things I saw on your video. Thanks again.
That was great information. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for the tips!
That was very informative. Thank you! 🤗
Hi Jennifer, This was very informative and I need to store it so I can refer back to it and clean any stinky yarn I may get. Thank you so much. A yarny friend.
Thanks to all commenters too cause I learned a lot from them too.
Great demo, tips & info! Love the color of that yarn! I often air yarn outside for days, laid out on racks & then rotate the yarn ever so often. I also mix several drops of lemongrass & eucalyptus essential oils, filled with H20 in a spray bottle & spritz the yarn as I rotate it. Both helps, if the yarn isn’t too far gone! Otherwise, I rewind into a hank also; so it aerates even more & actually wash if needed. 💁🏻♀️ Those 2 EOs, with a little laundry soap, cuts the smell of just about anything! I also put a few drops in dog bedding laundry. And of course a splash of good ‘ole vinegar. 🙌 Beautiful backyard view! 😊 Trees 🌳
Thanks for this helpful video. I was given a bunch of yarn by someone and a few skeins are a little dingy. This will help! Thanks!!
Great tips. Thank you.
Sooooooooooooooo HELPFUL!!!
Thank you, Jennifer 👍
Love the spinner
Thank you for sharing this information.
Big Hug's with Lots of Love
Love your plug. It can never be lost like here in NZ. But I do know that they are being used in more modern homes now.
Thanks I would never have thought to add the vinegar.

My my that is my swift. I love 💘it!
This is the first time I've ever seen a salad spider thank you for sharing
I recently bought some Noro Yarn ( too expensive to send back) that arrived old smelly. Tammy Cook recommended this video to help me get the smell out of my yarn. Thank you for sharing these tips, appreciated.
I was recently gifted some beautiful yarn that smelled like cigarettes really strong. I washed some, amd some I just placed out in the sun and the smell is gone. I hope it helps you
That yarn is beautiful! Love your spin dry machine.
Power tools and yarn, what more do you need? Lol ☺️💖👍👍
Right?
I used Lavender essential oil in my rinse water. Also I mix the lavender essential oils with water and I spray my dusty or mildewed yarn that I was gifted. Worked great.
Very cool. TFS 💜
Crystal, thanks so much.
Jennifer
This was great!! Thank you
😊♥️
Thanks! I have a tote or 2 in garage. Will try this on them
Thank you for all the info. I will use small amount of vinegar in the future.
I have some yarn that’s musty, I’ve had it since 2010 😂 and it’s traveled all over the country with us…great ideas!
Thank you for sharing!
i love the salad spinner idea. i have a salad spinner i use for my undies. i don't have it motorized though.
Very helpful!
This is awesome! Thank you so much!
I would salt in the water as well as the vinegar to help with the bleeding of the colors. Love your spinner. I have seen you play with it when you got , great since the motor or part of it was missing 💜
Thank you for the tips
