SOG is almost there , BUT I am a Marine Electrician and I use a Surge daily " 15-20 times " I cut , scrape and pry and ream fiberglass holes, battery terminals and split wire all day long and the surge just keeps taking the abuse. I have to carry a sharpener and sharpen it three times a week. The Surge has held up to constant use and abuse for almost 7 years . I carried the wave for about 8 years before the Surge " I broke three of them" . If the SOG can hold up to this I'm in. I didn't see where you compared the types of steel used in each one. That is a big factor in durability. My Surge was black , like your when new , now about 90% of the black is worn off.
Thanks for your thoughts on this one. I think it's definitely meant to compete with the surge, but the surge has so much going for it that it's hard to beat. Cheers, buddy.
I have 4 of these and 2 Leatherman waves and 5. T4s. I have 11 kits. Love em . Had othets. Over a period of 31 years of use they broke. These are all I use now. Each of my bags weigh 19.8 pounds. Thay are 20L. Am in the woods once a week. I can catch my food...clean my food..cok my food. .have shelter...navigate...make fire...and purify and filter my water.....also have 2 solar panels along with a good first aid and trauma kit. Have made it 61 days out of one of my bags. I just hope i dont have to really use this. Im 63 years old and i still love doing this after being in the military.
Thank you for your detailed and hands on review. I'm a left arm below elbow amputee who's recently begun carrying an MT EDC. After twenty years of one-handedness I can put the tool to use regularly and wonder why it took me so long to admit and accept this convenience. The only inconvenience with which I regularly struggle when putting the MT to use depends on how recently I cut my fingernails since opening blades and tools and even opening the pliers can potentially require thoughtful blade/tool/pliers opening techniques. That often frustrating inconvenience is solved by the poweracess's assist functionality. Thanks again.
My 2cents' worth; For me, the interchangeable saw on the surge is what makes the difference. I can see that having to have the proprietary bit drives are probably a PITA, especially as they're the sort of thing I habitually lose. And finally, I love the idea of the geared pliers, but I have my doubts about whether that mechanism is going to be durable enough to withstand hard use. I've had Leathermans since the PST, but I can imagine space for another multitool or two. Thanks for the review
I still have my old Gerber multi tool I got back in the 80's. Full size pliers and easy one hand open, with practice. That hook could be used to cut seat belts in a emergency, and also great for cutting rope. Nice tool.
Unfortunately that SOG uses garbage steel...5cr15mov. The cool part is that you can buy individual tools on the website and swap them out. If they upgraded to even 420HC, I'd be a buyer.
SOLID review and good compare/contrast! Thanks for taking the time to review this product. MAN, you’ve got A LOT of GREAT content on your channel, brother! 💪🇺🇸
That’s awesome,if it had scissors it would be a must have..my Leatherman Wave+ was stolen out of my Jeep so I’ve been carrying the old Leatherman Rebar.I like the Rebar but I’m ready to replace it with something with scissors and a bit driver..I’m a knife guy so I always have a good knife on me which makes the knife blade the most useless tool on a multitool for me.Ive never used the knife blade on any multitool Ive ever owned.I swear,if I could replace the knife blade on my Rebar with scissors and some how add a bit driver to it,I would gladly carry it for the rest of my life..I love the design of this SOG though.everything from the assisted blades,to the one handed functionality, and the bit driver made into the top of the tool.I would kill for one with scissors in place of the plain edge blade(I personally like the serrated blades in a multitool more than the plain edge blade because I’m always gonna be carrying a good plain edge blade knife anyway
I have several Leatherman multitools, but I must admit that I love my SOG "power" pliers. With the addition of a bit kit and a bit extender (available at any hardware store) this tool does it all for me. As far as scissors go, I already carry a micro scissor in my wallet. A file would be welcome. The gear operated pliers are a joy to use, and once tried, it is difficult to go back to the Leathermans.
My Surge is MIA. SOG should have matched to Surges tools toolset. This guy is in the right ballpark. I'd take a 4mm bit holder and a pouch that'll hold a bunch of them. Bonusnif you do em double sided like the cybertool.
I've been trying one of these out, I noticed the assist on it does not work as well as the assist on my older SOG MT, the SOG PowerAssist. How do you like the assist? I'm trying to decide if its just finicky or if I hate it. LOL. They made the scales extra thick to put in that assist mechanism. I feel like they forgot to make the thumbstuds longer, they do not stick out much from the scale.
Yup with a thumb thats a bit more robust, getting a good purchase may be an issue. Mine seems to snap nice. The Powerassist is better like you say. I cant help think how close this is the great. The oxide also contributes to how smooth the assist works.
well I thought the same about the thumbstuds, but if the were longer, they would start to snag if its not in the sheet. maybe deploy unintentionally while in pocket or something. I got use to in in a day. I was on the fence about the PA assist, but I love it now.
The big question is how durable this tool will be in the long run. A lot of reviews on there other muti tools show them breaking early on . The Surge is tough as nails . How is you your SOG holding up ?
Its also rarely mentioned that sogs compound leverage is actually really annoying when youre trying to tighten larger fittings.. when the plier head is actually wide enough to go over the fitting, the leverage has spread the handles so wide, you cant get any leverage to actually squeeze it.
Wow, positive. I really like it, I did buy one just now. The extra tool kit makes it for me. We'll see how it works out. I will have several SOG MTs with compound plier heads, they've seem to become my everyday MT more so than any other brand. Not sure why but I do trust the SOG build quality, as in any tool within it's own limitations.
Not to be rude. But if your gonna say that you like a case and you have a video for it..... Maybe put a link to the video to help others out wanting to watch it.
I prefer the leatherman tools. They last longer and can take some serious abuse. This sog seems to be a much nicer one than ive ever gotten my hand on because the blades and stuff are almost useless on the earlier versions. Does that sog have replacement wire cutters? I live the hex driver set up on the sog but i had to choose durability for me
Sounded like you preferred the SOG over the surge until the end?... Where did u get it? Is there a model number? I see a few online but the tools vary slightly. Thanks

I'm curious how good this is because i want to order one but skeptical because of reviews of the older models of SOG but i feel like they improved with this, also nobody mentions the bottom part of the crimpers until you,
Best pliers on the market until you need to tighten a larger nut, then the sogs compound leverage makes the handles so wide you cant get any leverage.. ask me how i know.. surge all day.
Yup, I call it handle angle (I got it from youtuber TX tool crib). I really don't think you'll have less grip as the compound leverage extends. You'll just have to use to hands that's all, unless....
In my opinion the SOGS handles break to easy. I broke mine within 2 days cutting metal banding . I’ve been using the Surge fir the past year cutting the same banding
@@jasonmiller9495 I think it’s a little bit of you and more mechanical on the pliers, more parts equal to more likely to break, if you’re constantly using like bolt cutters they will go against you and break. I’ve used surge to snap stables off and it works but it did loosen the pliers, luckily their warranty is godly but like I said they work fine on hard use just because simple but heavy duty plier head.

The SOG wire cutters work well until you dull them; when this happens, the tool is ruined. With the Surge, you can just simply replace the cutting edges. So, 'no way' is your claim valid regarding SOG plier superiority. If you really need to do hard, hard, hard work, the Surge is the tool of choice

I agree on changing the serrated blade to a file but I think that you shouldn’t change the other tool for scissors

Negative.

Yes but not as much fineness as actual tweezers.
