  • One of the best treatments for your child with spina bifida is physical therapy. Physical therapy consists of exercises to improve gross motor skills such as strength, balance, and coordination when standing and walking.
This video uses electrical stimulation (e-stim) as part of the physical therapy program. Electrical stimulation facilitates muscle activation during transitions from sitting to standing, standing up with/without support, and walking. This girl's mom is highly dedicated to the home program using e-stim, and has compiled a fantastic team to help her child get stronger and thrive.
What is spina bifida? Spina bifida is the most common defect of the neural tube. It is a congenital spinal defect in which the spine does not close completely. Usually, at the end of the first month of pregnancy, the neural tube begins to close, and it develops into the brain, spinal cord, and nervous system.
Myelomeningocele is the most severe type of spina bifida. It develops into a fluid-filled sac containing part of the spinal cord and nerves and protrudes from the baby's back. Electrical stimulation is used as part of the physical therapy program for children with neurological diagnoses such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy. There are several ways to use e-stim depending on the functional goal, such as rolling, crawling, standing up, or walking. For spinal stimulation, the electrodes are located on the spinal muscles (the baby's back) to facilitate an upright posture and increase the sensation pathways between the spine and the brain.
Another type of electrical stimulation called Functional Electrical Stimulation can be used on specific muscle groups like the abdominals, gluteus, and legs for facilitating activities such as standing up and walking.

Hey I am a engineer and I was wondering if u can tell how the legs twist and what u think can help to keep stable I am developing a new support system to help patients with the same problems

Hi, the legs can twist from the hips or the knees. This could be due to lack of muscle activation or high/low muscle tone (which is how prepared is the muscle for action). The girl in this video has a diagnosis of spina bifida, which is an injury in her spinal cord. This causes that certain muscles are affected because the nerves do not activate them, and this creates compensations. I love electrical stimulation because it activates those muscles, and with repetition the kid learns how to activate them by themselves. Also, there is something called de-rotators which is like a elastic strap to bring the legs in more alignment, and so keeps the joints healthier to prevent future osteoarthritis. I hope this helps! Good luck developing the new support system!

I have had this disease for 18 years. Unfortunately, I did not find a cure for it. Currently, I have difficulty walking. I use a walking stick to walk.

Hi, thanks so much for sharing your experience! In this video, we are sharing this little girl's experience using electrical stimulation and doing infant physical therapy. She has gain motor control and now she is walking with a walker to assist with balance. It could be worth checking with your Doctor to get a referral to physical therapy.

Whpo pays for that expensive life long treatment? Taking Folic Acid during pregancy would have prevented this problem.

Taking folic acid might’ve helped, but there’s no guarantee.
