And this after MJ missed 65 games in the regular season due to a broken foot. This was only his 19th game back from an injury that even his team doctors told him was too soon. MJ risked his entire future by returning too soon. MJ wanted his team to win and he did everything he could to do that. In the end, though, the Celtics were just too deep with talent for one man to overcome.

Great video. Love that you acknowledge Bird's passing, as a kid that was actually what was most impressive about him to me, before I even really understood basketball. Just like you said, those crazy fast adjustments in the air were just COOL. And then the part about the praise and love for the game that Bird heaped on MJ, despite being a famous sh*t-talker - that's magical. That's an incredible use of social capital - that's the best way to be a sh*t-talker, is to eventually pay it back with love. the kind of surprise turn and goodness you root for and rarely see.

First, nobody is truly GOAT because we can’t predict the future.
Second, Larry and Magic set the stage for Air Jordan. They captured hearts and minds for the New Sheriff.
Third, Bird 3 MVP’s, Coach of Year, and NBA Executive of the Year knows Basketball. Larry Legend is a Basketball savant-obviously he would sing the praises of Michael Jordan.
Fourth, I wish Larry could have played a few more years without excruciating pain he was a blast to watch.
Lastly, I’m not sure “Legend” or “Air” respected all of the opponents they played but with them it was obviously mutual. Would have been nice to see Mike at least win one playoff game against Larry.
I would like to see them do commercials together or host SNL or even play another game of horse for a Big Mac or something.

Bird was a master trash talker but he was also next level IQ. He praised Jordan to the moon because 1) he didn’t want to provoke a world class scorer, 2) He knew Jordan was vain. Bird didn’t think he was 2nd class to anyone, but he made it sound that way when he felt it to his advantage.
Other comments are true - MJ at this stage was typical NBA high scorer mentality that did nothing to elevate team play. Bird on the other hand from day one he entered the league knew how to elevate his team - which is why his ROOKIE year a 29 win C’a team won 61 games.

Bird carried a Indiana State team with no one to help him to the championship game. People forget that McHale came off the bench and Parrish was okay in Golden State but the team was a loser. Larry beat Michael like a drum for years. He never lost a series to Michael so why say the Larry was concerned about Michael. Larry was concerned about Magic. Why would Larry ever be concerned about Michael. Michael couldn't stop Larry from rebounding, passing or shooting. Stop making a case for a man that lost EVERY TIME he played Larry. At least we can all agree that Larry's back gave out on him and that's why he retired. Michael never beat him.

I wasn’t even a Bulls fan growing up. But you will never convince me than there was anyone before or since as good as Michael Jordan. It wasn’t even the points he scored or any other stats. The guy just had the perfect physical form and size for a basketball player, the insatiable desire to win at any cost, and even when being shoved in mid-air, still seemed to always get a perfectly formed shot off. Bird was great, Dr. J, Chamberlain, Kareem, Magic, Kobe, LeBron, Steph Curry, but MJ? Sorry, he will always be on a total higher level.

Bird made his team a supporting cast as the commentator would say, Jordan took his team out of the game. The reason they didn't have audio at the start on the interview, they asked Jordan if one person could beat the Celtics and he said no one man can beat the Boston Celtics. Then hogged the ball. Larry Bird said Jordan is going to score his points, we are going to make it hard for him, make him take bad shots and take the rest of his team out the game. Which is exactly what happened. MJ was great but without my videos taken by Mr Jordan he would be better than Bronny James.

Bird and Jordan were different players and I think are on the same level. Bird’s body and fitness held him back and ultimately failed him. His diet and physical conditioning were not good. He never reached his full potential because of that. Bird was a better shooter and passer, not even close. MJ was a better all around player and also was a physical specimen.

Clickbait title from someone that did not live through the era and has a limited perspective.
Boston did not have its head down....what a nitwit comment.
AS I recall the bulls either got swept despite MJ hitting 60 and not passing to any teammmates.
And Jordan never beat Bird in any series, Jordan never beat Magic AND KAreem....took him years to bea the pistons after age cuaght up to them
Bird has big help becuase he made everyone better and he actually passed the ball.
Bird was the best shooter in the league, perhaps in history.
Ask Luc Longley if MJ was at all a good teammate.

Jordan was a much better INDIVIDUAL player, but Bird was a much better TEAM player. Boston swept the Bulls 2 years in a row in the playoffs. Bird made everyone on his team better. The '86 starting 5 are ALL in the hall of fame. Jordan cannot say that. He scored 63 points in one game against Boston and still lost. Bird was a better pure shooter, but Jordan had MUCH BETTER moves. To determine the "GOAT" you really need to define what constitutes "GOAT".

Bird didn't have it this game with no plan for defense on MJ who should have won more MVP then got because didn't want to give it to the same player year after year. The year MJ scored 63 points in the playoffs and lost that was a MVP year and did 😊 player that started a NBA team not like Bird all HOF start8

Except that Bird and the Celtics beat them in the playoffs 6 times before Bird finally retired - Jordan was an incredible physical player, but he had no idea how to play as a team.

  • @tbaker294

Ummm....who won that game? Once again, a player with the ability to include the teammates, wins out over individual greatness who failed to include his teammates. Bird 23-11 record including 6-0 in the playoffs. Don't want to hear that Jordan had no players on the Bull's, they had plenty. Swap Bird and Jordan out, and the same result with the Bulls winning. Bird got the most from his team.

Jordan never beat Bird until Bird was leaving. Even in the game in question, the Bulls lost. it doesn't matter if you score 200 points, if your team loses, you lose. Bird knew this. And until Birds back was unbearable, Jordan always took a back seat, you don't have to like it, but it is true. True Goat, Bird.
