- The Mamas And The Papas California Dreamin Reaction
1. Quartet....isn't it weird that this quartet is 2 guys and 2 girls. Off the top of my head I can't think of any other groups like this.
2.Love the contrast with the voices. The echo effect is nice because it really drives the lyrics into your head.
3. Love the instrumentation. The tambourine drives the tempo and keeps you in tune with what's going on. The flute....that's a flute right? Really in the low register. Normally when flutes play there it's for something mysterious.
This is where i Got the video- • The Mamas & The Papas ...

And then you moved on to ABBA - but ironically screwing around messed up both groups. Also like ABBA John Phillips (the main arranger and songwriter) was very painstaking when working on arrangements
If you like them, on UA-cam they have Behind The Music about the story of the Mamma’s And Pappa’s. Really good
Regarding the low flute... according to Wikipedia it was an alto flute (so naturally a lower register) played by famous jazz saxophonist Bud Shank.
1. All their voices are different ranges which is why its so deep. The blonde Mama Michelle is a soprano, the dark haired Mama Cass was a contralto. The taller Papa John was a baritone, and the lead singing Papa Denny was a tenor. John and Michelle wrote all the songs and John composed the harmony arrangements.
2. The "echo" effect is called a "call and response" where singer(s) sing a lead and the backup singers follow with a delayed response. The Mamas and Popas perfecticted this style.
3. Yes, the flute. The solo was done by jazz professional Bud Shank. It fits the mood on the song perfectly and was added at the suggestion of the song's producer Lou Adler.
Mamas and the Papas had so many fantastic songs and this one was one of them....
This is honestly the only one I'm familiar with. All the other ones that I'm familiar with ill figure out when doing reactions lol
December of '65, Denny Doherty on Lead-----------John Phillips wrote & arranged------------Cass Elliott is the contralto ------------Michelle Phillips is the soprano---------------& THE DROP-DEAD BLONDE BABE. ----------------------------WolfSky9, 74 y/o
Try their "Monday Monday " the harmonies are out of this world!
LOVE THIS SONG! Harmonies are amazing
It's a super nostalgic song so I had to do it to get the full effect.
Another fantastic song from the past
This is such an iconic song.
This was a big hit back in the 60’s. I know because I was a teenager when this came out. Their music lasted about 3 years but in that time they had many hits. Michelle Phillips (the pretty one was married to the tall guy John Phillips. He was the brains behind the group. His main thing was his arrangements and the harmonies were amazing. Then you has Momma Cass Eliot and Denny Dougherty. On UA-cam they have Behind The Music. The story of the Mommas and Pappas. Michelle is the only one left alive now. Cass died of a heart attack at 33. You should check it out. Great story about great performers.
Amazing harmony. I’ve heard a an oldies DJ talk about how this was recorded in two channels I think? They didn’t know how to handle stereo so depending on what device you can hear the separation of the guys and girls. I think the effect is cool. Since you’re going way back how about The 5th Dimension?
It's interesting to hear about recording back in the days. They didn't have nearly the technology we have now.
That 60’s sound that The Mamas and the Papas had, along with The Beach Boys and others, with the amazing harmonies, that certain 60’s guitar sound, ... there’s nothing like it.
Love your reaction rock on dude
Try Monday monday by the Mamas and the Papas its one of my favorites
hat’s off for the backing band “The Wrecking Crew”. Wouldn’t have been the same without those folks....
This and about a million other songs.
There is a whole universe of fantastic songs from the mid-50s through the end of the 60s at the birth of rock. Could you do some more of those?
Yes flute
The lower the note the longer the wavelength which gives the lower and bass notes that fuller thicker meatier sound as opposed to light and “airy” haha
M/F Bands are common.
MM/FF. A little less but not unheard of
Sonny & Cher, missing persons, Blondie, Jefferson airplane , the
B52s, the pixies, human league, Thompson twins, no doubt, etc.
ABBA will be the prime example everyone in your subscriber base will reference as its obvious
ABBA was two married couples (MMFF formatted quartet).
Some bands had more than 4 members and had at least two people from each gender
Fleetwood Mac , the fifth dimension, velvet underground, the talking heads, etc.
I don't want to say I hate flute in the upper register but I really don't like flutes doing what flutes do best. I once heard this trip and one of the flute parts was this super fast low run. It was AMAZING. I like the flute in the lower registers.
Jaybriel Akoi
Jaybriel Akoi checkout Andrew Lattimer, progressive rock band Carmel. I mention him as he is a maestro and I’m sure you’re going to get dozens of people telling you to listen to Ian Anderson (me of the founding members of Jethro Tull).
His live performances of thick as a brick, bouree, my god and others particularly from the live at Tampa stadium 1976 or from other concerts 1969-73
Most of the solos are pretty mind boggling performances
Here’s a good one to start with if you’re interested

Live at Isle of Wight 1970 is pretty awesome too

Land of opportunity. California. The promised land.
As a kid growing up in Hawaii I wanted to live in California so bad.
In a different universe, possibly.
As for the sex makeup of the group. No group today or in recent memory could touch these guys. The summers of love. Ahhhhh.
Well it's hard to match trend setting bands. I'm slowly seeing how all the groups are interconnect either by friends ship or music style or time frame by doing these reactions. it's pretty interesting. Apparently the Carpenters used the momas and the papas instruments before they were famous just because they needed the equipment. That's a story I saw in a biography.
I liked where the bass was in the mix too.
THE FLUTE HAD A WOODY TONE, FLUTES WERE POPULAR IN THE DAY BECAUSE THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL, GOOD REACTION, REACT TO JONI MITCHELL, "For Free" , live in concert 1970 thanks.
Listen to abba (mama mia etc) recent quartet
Ps do you have new equipment your picture is very clear!!
Pps monday monday by the mamas and papas is brilliant
Well....this was actually done a couple of weeks ago. My newest videos i've changed the lighting to make it more "cinematic" is what I think. But you tell me......in my older videos i'm fully lit. Do you like it better that way? Honest opinion.
@@jaybrielakoi7747 i like the new version it give the watcher more depth and clarity
It was funny that you were about to say by the Carpenters at the end there as a very young Karen Carpenters did quite a good cover of this.
Just listened to a little bit. It's def Karen. Really upbeat though compared to her normal style IMHO
@@jaybrielakoi7747 They were still trying to find a style, wonder if this was when they thought to go lower with Karens vocals. here is a link to a little more info on the Carpenters recording of this

It's a clarinet
Sad but true factoid: Mama Cass (the big girl), choked to death on a chicken bone. A lot of bad jokes were made about it.
It would be funny if it weren't so tragic.
No, you're lying I just checked. Wikpedia says she died in her sleep of heart failure. Nice try though.
We believed for a long time that Mama Cass died from choking on a ham sandwich, so one of the bad jokes was: Just think, if mama Cass and Karen Carpenter had shared that sandwich, they’d both be alive today.
Sometimes you have to joke about things that are too sad to take in. Both deaths were a blow to the world of music.
