  • Review of a new chess variant by Colenel Nguyên Quí Hải. This new game, known as Commander Chess in English, is a complex revision of the traditional Chinese chess, xiangqi, brought up to represent the realities of modern warfare. Here, we take a look at the rules, and consider the challenge of understanding how this game is meant to be played - AncientChess.com

cờ ni do xuất phát tại Việt Nam nên nhìn qua có thể hiểu: 1. biển là vùng biển Việt Nam.
    2. Sông là khu Vĩ Tuyến 17 với sông Bến Hải, còn lại hai phần đất liền tương ứng nam bắc của Việt Nam

Great comment -- Thanks! Translation follows:
Because the game originated in Vietnam, it can be understood at first glance: 1. The sea is the sea area of Vietnam. 2. River is the 17th parallel area with Ben Hai river, the remaining two parts of the mainland correspond to the north and south of Vietnam

Because the sea is on the left, I think the view of this board is from the North side (which makes sense)

Thanks for the great comment! It's been my fascination since I was a teenager. Now that I deal with the sets, making a business of it, I have an 'excuse' to indulge myself all the more. Send me messages any time. I'm a pretty good player, by the way, but never settled down with one form long enough to master it.

My family have been chess lovers for a long time. Dad played in the military and taught us kids when we were young. My bro is way better at it, and I love the potential of the game but I'm no good. lol!! I've already bought my brother two beautiful sets. I never knew so many variants existed till I found your site. I was blown away!

Thanks -- I'm in dialogue with Colonel Hai about the rules ... I think I almost have them understood. I'll think of you for help with upcoming translation issues... (We'll also be chatting about the 'flip-xiangqi' .... )

+Ngoan Mai Thanks very much for contacting me! A few details of the rules are still difficult to understand from Colonel Hai's translation. Please check my videos and information on ancientchess.com/commander-chess
There are videos and a rule booklet that can be downloaded.
Let me know what you think of my English presentation so far.

Yes, this one borders on other war games, or even character games where each piece has its special 'powers'. I'm trying to pull it together soon. Want it to fit neatly into my 4-panel booklet format (will have to be small print!) ... and will run it by the creator, Colonel Hai, before publishing it.

I'm sure you can find a Vietnamese chess player here on youtube who is fluent in both languages who would be willing to help you learn more and even assist in translating.

Yes, there are probably a million peopele out there totally ready to help a chess game enthusiast with some translation. HELLOOOOO ANY BODY OUT THERE ... I'm actually pretty close to being sure about the rules now, just have to ask the Colonel a few questions and get my Publisher program started up...

  • @AncientChess

Yes, we'll keep working those barriers. It's amazing how badly Google Translator handles Vietnamese, perfectly unreadable. But I think I'm close to having the rules down. Yes, there is a ship out there which has a limited range to shoot onto land or sea, and can be used to carry other pieces, including fighter jets ... it's all rather involved! More soon --
