    Informative...glad you pointed out some of the difficulties in raising an owl for people who may not have done the thoughtful research you did before getting one. So many get a dog or other pet without considering what it takes to be a responsible owner.

    In this video when you mentioned feeding time Lookie sounds like, "Yes Mommy, I want my food where is it; can I have it please," with her owl chirps or sounds; including love as the cherry on top in her voice as she looked at you. i would like to have an barn owl as a pet but sadly California doesn't allow people to have raptors as pets; unless they are certified as a avian raptor facility, with the proper paperwork. I'll settle for a barn owl tattoo perched in a branch on my arm, shoulder blade, calf, or ankle some day, love the colors of the species.

      Yuri Stevens - I am in California too. I've done a lot of rescue work in my life, and wild animals are not good pets because: costly food, loud noises which bother neighbors, lots of training/reading you have to do, lack of qualified vets, pricey enclosures, not easy to train to poop in one place, strong smell in marking territory, huge insurance liability cost, potential of serious injury to others leading to criminal negligence lawsuits and potential jail time and fines.
      Lookie the owl lives in Belgium. You are in California, which is full of lawyers and lawsuits. Consider that.
      A wild animal is almost a full time job. A domestic pet requires much less care. Are you seriously going to spend 3/4 of your time with your owl? If you have a demanding job, or a spouse, or kids, or a mortgage, forget it! Your spouse will leave you, the kids will whine, the job will stress you out. And the homeowners insurance will not insure you at worst, or have your rates go up at best.
      If you are still determined to have that owl, you can under CA law, acquire an owl that cannot be released into the wild again. If you use this owl for educational purposes, and you fulfill your educational requirements for keeping this wild animal, you can apply for a permit to keep it. But you must then, take it to schools and show that you are meeting the educational requirements.
      This is to prevent abuse and capture of our native wildlife by inhumane captors leading to a miserable captive existence for the animal. None of us animal lovers want that. This is already happening with backyard breeders of dogs and cats. The abuse is horrific. So be happy that you live in a state that protects our precious wildlife with strict laws.

    • @joey85joker
      @joey85joker 8 років тому +1

      it did help but may I ask about biting? when they small they go biteing like if you would offer food when you reach out to the peak. they eventually calm down right and not thinking you offer food but can cuddle like you demonstrated??? because lookie looks like being gentle with the peak when your face close by.

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +3

      You have to also touch the beak and the paws every day when you're not feeding because if you don't do this, the owl will stay agressive every time you try to touch the beak or paws. If she bites you whenever you try to touch the beak or paws, you need to take the beak gently between your fingers and shake it GENTLY to show that your not scared and biting will not be tolerated. Do you want me to show you on video tomorrow or the day after that or was it clear here in the comment?

    • @joey85joker
      @joey85joker 8 років тому +1

      Its quiet clear, i actually do that now. My owl Kenzo was very vulnerable up until now. He stand and walk almost every time so I started showing him not to be scared or be so defensive. When he is few steps away from me he actually comes to me to safety. So we are getting somewhere. Just asking. Also I have a dog, Kenzo always walk up to him without question. Not a scared type :-) everything good, your very kind, thank you for your answers to my questions :-) lovely videos, i subscribed before i even got my owl Kenzo, so am always happy to see your videos. Thanks.

    In a book called Wesley The Owl, the owl actually learned how to tell time. He learned how long 2 hours was, 2 days, and the difference between night and day. Amazing, no?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому +1

      Yes, that's amazing but was it real of fiction?

    • @kyraschefter4337

      Vegan Hippie real, she lived in California, and she got her owl from the California Institute of Technology. He couldn't be released into the wild or be in an aviary because he had nerve damage in one wing. So this woman adopted him and they live together for 19 YEARS!!!

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому +2

      Kyra Schefter Aw that's awesome! Owls are really intelligent. I had a guy comment on one of my newest videos a few days ago and he said birds like Lookie are dumb haha. He should come and live with me for a week and he would be amazed! They're SO smart and also emotionally really intelligent. I'm making a video about that in a few days. I've got a story to tell about how Lookie showed how intelligent and sensitive owls really are.

    • @kyraschefter4337
      @kyraschefter4337 7 років тому +2

      I totally agree! People really don't understand owls and say they look dumb. I have sworn to hate on those comments. 😂

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому +2

      Kyra Schefter LOL I know how you feel. It's frustrating when people who ACTUALLY know nothing about it, dissaprove of having one in captivity because they think it's abuse or the bird isn't happy. If they would just go and live with a falconer for a few months... They would change their minds. Ignorance is SO dangerous to the world...

    How does Lookie deal with any visitors you may have?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  8 років тому +1

      She's super territorial which means she goes into defense mode every time! She will bite visitors when they come too close. She believes it's HER house and other people shouldn't come there. This is because of a mistake I've made in her education. I talk about this in my other video: ua-cam.com/video/rSb1Sf2QASY/v-deo.html
      She's super sweet outside though and outside she would never hurt anyone.

    Has Lookie destroyed a lot of your property and how big of a space do you think owning an Owl needs?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому +2

      No she hasn't. And the space you need depends on the species you want. Small owls like barn owls can be kept on a perch inside the house and I live in a small studio. I'm moving in a couple of weeks though to a very big house.

    How do you get your Owl from pecking your eyes out?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому +5

      I fully imprinted her on humans and have her since she was 3 days old. When she was yound and during growing up, I socialized her and got her used to human contact. I touched her tallons and beak regularly and tought her not to bite when they are touched...

    • @Liger123100
      @Liger123100 7 років тому

      Vegan Hippie So you just like tapped her beck and talons once she bit someone or attacked someone?

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому +3

      Daniel ExtremeGamer Haha no no, she never attacked anyone lol. Starting from whens he was little, I petted her tallons and beack and when she would nibble at me (not really bite) I would gently take her beak and gently shake it so she learned I wasn't afraid of her and biting would be punished. It wasn't ACTUALLY a punishment because you can never be harsh on an owl. They'll become scared of hands in general if you're too rough with them when they're little.

    • @skeeter197140
      @skeeter197140 7 років тому

      "Tapped her beck"? Not being smart, but are you saying "taped her beak"? I assume beck is beak, but I didn't know if you meant tapping like tapping your finger on her beak, or if you meant using tape to keep her from biting someone.

    • @skinbyrdable
      @skinbyrdable  7 років тому +1

      I never said "tapped" I wrote "petted" like to pet your dog. Tapping the beak would indeed not be very smart lol. I'm sorry if I spelled beak incorrectly at first. :-)

      Ow ok, that sounds bad. I'll make the video as soon as possible. Eén ding dat je al moet proberen bij de volgende maaltijd: neem de uil op je handschoen en geef het eendagskuiken MAAR 'zeker' je uil. Dat wil zeggen dat je haar langveters vastneemt tussen je wijsvinger en je duim die in de handschoen zitten zodat ze niet KAN wegvliegen. Ga wat voor de tv zitten want ze mag niet van handschoen af TOT ze het kuiken op heeft gegeten. Als ze na een half uur nog niet heeft gegeten van het kuiken, gooi je het kuiken weg en krijgt je uil dus geen eten vandaag. Morgen doe je exact hetzelfde: eet ze niet op de handschoen dan heeft ze dikke pech: geen eten. Wanneer ze genoeg honger heeft, zal ze het kuiken van de handschoen wel eten. Wel altijd zorgen dat ze niet weg kan vliegen. Dit is stap één. Laat me iets weten wanneer dit is gelukt? Dan maak ik zo snel mogelijk een video over de rest voor je. :-) Als je iets niet snapt, gewoon vragen he. Dikke knuffel!
