  • Sadly Garmin doesn't offer Linux drivers for the InReach devices. Syncing a Garmin InReach can still be done on Linux with a virtual machine. This seems like it has not been covered much, @Overland Bound made a great video about how to import GPX files to the InReach.
All you need it to do is til install Virtual Box or alternate virtual environment and get the Microsoft Windows development environment from here: developer.micr...
The guest additions are needed if you use Virtual Box.
After the install of the guest additions you should be able to enable access to the Garmin InReach from the USB menu of Virtual Box or from the settings panel.
After that syncing can be done with the Garmin Windows software as usual.
You can use a Linux device to design your maps online and later sync it in the Virtual Box.

My inreach explorer se doesn't mount in the first place in linux, so I can't pick it in windows vbox. I've tried a few cables but wondering if I need a specific usb data cable

Should work with any high quality USB cable. It shouldn't mount as a volume in linux tho, you should be able to see it in system logs.
