    Man, there's no dishonor in walking a segment you're not feeling regardless of ability. Two weeks ago at Angel Fire bike park I came up on a feature I've ridden dozens of times and just got that "nope, not today" feeling. I'd just forgotten how steep it really is and in a flash it made me nervous in a way I opted to ride around. It happens.

      I agree, I try to do one thing I haven't done before each time I go riding and ride it a few times. I found with myself anyways that when I try to do too much in one day I freak myself out and the next time I ride it feels like I'm starting all over again.

      Yup, same thing happened to me a few weeks ago at Mountain Creek. A drop I've done 100 times, just wasn't feeling it. Had that shakey, nervous feeling and wasn't riding confident for whatever reason. No shame in saving it for another day!

      Seriously, I was shocked when he kept riding after that g put, but I’m assuming he didn’t identify the crack until after and that he’s not a psycho that rode a cracked frame down the double black.

    • @JohnBooth
      @JohnBooth 3 роки тому +2

      Looking at the linkage the crack was in the part of the tube that would actually be in compression on that g out right? Makes sense the it would fail at that point with the water bottle mount becoming a stress riser. Really glad the frame survived till the bottom.

    • @MrSupermugen
      @MrSupermugen 2 роки тому

      @@JohnBooth its just Evil things, i swear they dont stress test their frames based on how people actually ride their bikes.
      Ive spoken to several Carbon Professionals in the MTB sector and they've all said Evils suspension design is highly flawed as the amount of stress on the downtube is concentrate in one area that carbon isnt designed to handle in that direct.
      Look at the Enduro around the shock tunnel, Not designed to handle the twisting of a Trunnion shock.. and tada they use a trunnion and it cracks the frame.
      Theres only a few Brands who got their shit together with carbon, a few botique brands, Trek, Canyon(their new stuff thats made by quest composites).
      I just think Every carbon Brand needs to add and extra layer or two for strength (and attempt to remove stiffness) or look into Alloy coated Carbon designs. - i believe only one brand does this?

    It is always great to see people NOT ride an obstacle because they are not feeling it. Too many times in the past I rode stuff on an off day and it ended badly. But I am older and " wiser " now . Good to show people we all have off days and that the mountain and trail will be there for us next time. Sucks about your frame , but it is impressive it held together the rest of the ride . Really appreciate you speaking to the intimidation factor and owning (on video) that sometimes you’re “just not feeling it”. We’ve all been there in our own way. Dale had a similar memorable moment on 5th Horseman a year or so back where he contemplated for a long while and then just took a pass as you did. He scripted the comment “no shame”, and that’s 100% true. Stay safe and live to ride another day. 🤘Also, glad you made it through the rest of that ride with a frame cracked that badly. That could have had catastrophic consequences as there was a lot of gnarly terrain left to challenge.

    Better to walk than go to the hospital. I have been staying in Whistler for 3 months, across from the hospital, and the number of heli evacs to Vancouver is amazing plus all the bike park trucks that transport people to the hospital is amazing. A walk here or there is much better than 3-6 months without any riding. Great video!!!

    Glad to see advanced riders say “not today” to a feature. I took my first trip to a bike park this summer, went to kicking horse in Golden BC. There were some times on the trails up in the alpine I felt that fear on a feature, which was strange as I can’t say I’ve ever felt that before. I had a few “not today” moments, and wondered if that was normal after. Unfortunate that it happened on my first day at a bike park, but I know I have the ability to ride some of those features, just will end up being on another day.
    Also, as I’m watching your videos it’s slowly convincing me to move from the prairies to BC.

    Yeah, once you get "the fear", it is so tough to break through. It can come at weird times too. I was on a 5 day MTB trip last week. Feeling great, riding well, then on day 3, we were dropping in and it was very windy. The trail was narrow and steep at the top and I got shaken up by it. It really wasn't a big deal and I rode it smooth, but I couldn't get my head straight the rest of the ride. Walking easy features, forgetting everything I know. Other days, I'll have a scary crash but ride confident the rest of the day. Sometimes it just sneaks up on you, I guess

Either I didn´t pay too much attention to my nutrition and my energy runs low, or I´m too drained out from the past days of riding. Sometimes my head just says no too. So my guess is that the frame started cracking with that rock roll with a brupt end but it was unnoticeable and as he rode the gnarly chunky rough trail the crack got bigger and bigger until it went half way across down tube, if you did not notice it later in the car park and just went on to ride the next trail we would have had to watch a catastrophe and if you were able to notice the crack after the rock roll you would not have rode the bike down the trail but walked it to bottom cause you love your bikes, don't you??

    The Evil breaker 😆 Are you already on your new frame or have you been switching to another bike e.g. the Sight?
    Anyway, great trip and keep up that good work 🤙

    Does anyone know why his front brake line goes through the top cap/steer tube

    Hahaha
    This is some nasty riding man 🤘
    Nothing wrong with coming back to a feature i can relate when looking at something a little too long its time to move on. That is nuts that that frame snapped like that. This is my mtb channel my main one is ononewheel7.

    I see a lot of frames damaged because there was a hole drilled for bottle cage riv-nuts. Manufactures should and often dont re-enforce the week spot they create when fitting a cage mounting!

    How was the Warrenty process? I am thinking about getting a following for my XC bike, but I’m curious how easy it was to get another frame. Any thoughts?

      Super easy. Shop did everything and had the new triangle in a week.

    Its well known GoPro's lens effect the depth perception of the viewer of how steep things are...but when the GoPro makes it look completely vertical it must be insane lol

    Your bike got SO noisy after that crack. I'm sure that crack would have propagated from the rest of the trail so the initial crack wouldn't have been that large.

    This bummed me out. I know that if you lose sight of roll down that it's insanely steep. Pretty rad that a cracked downtube was able to handle a bunch more G outs and chunder without really giving away.

    not riding a feature because you dont feel confident enough is usually a good thing being silly and taking risks might be fun but forcing it despite having a bad feeling about it is just ending in insuries that in turn further reduce confidence.
    Edit: Please for those seeing this .. Keep in mind that if you are riding alone (which btw you should avoid at all cost) and your frame breaks like here.. please don't continue riding. And if you decide against healthy intuition just make sure people know where to search for you in case something happens
