11 years ago, my grandpa had passed away, he was a WW2 vet and I was the only grandkid who talked to him (no joke, literally like Bobby and Cotton Hill) and when I was told he passed away and even at the funeral, I never cried and kept thinking there was something wrong with me. 2 days after the funeral I was scrolling through Netflix and saw Big Fish, had seen it once before when it came out, but I was young and didn't get the movie. upon rewatching, at the end when his son is telling his dad about his friends and people in life he talked about all being there when he carries him to the river, it made me break down. as a kid I would be told stories about the war and after the war, my grandpas life was filled with stories. as a teen, I would question if they were real or not, as some sounded fantastical, but over time I would be told by others that they did actually happen. that movie made me glad to have known someone like my grandfather, I don't have kids of my own yet, but when I do, I'll be more than happy to retell his tales to them.

Not sure about the title but this movie was pretty popular in the early 2000s, won several awards too. Agree that this movie is a gem

My thoughts exactly. I saw it only once when it came out but I remember it being discussed constantly, everywhere, for at least ten years after its release.

It's even more impressive that this was directed by Tim Burton right before fully committing to the gothic brainrot style he is infamous for and Johnny Depp wasn't cast in the main role.

I haven't watched this movie since my dad passed over a decade ago. The story reminds me so much about him and his stories. I think about this movie every now and again, and I can't work myself to watch it again.
Funny thing is, when this came out, he had the same kind of feeling about his relationship with his own father.
It's a great movie, and I think enough time has passed where I can enjoy it again. Thank you for your essay, it really put some hard feelings in the right spot for me.

What I feel bad the most put of all of this was that just like Will said on his wedding day, he was just a foot note in his father's life. And the fact that he looked like the bad guy cause of how charismatic his father is is just heartbreaking.
I know his father isn't abusive but people irl do this in those relationships. And sometimes they don't have to be the nasties people ever but knowing they wouldn't change or they wished they were somewhere else doing other stuff besides being with you is lonely.

I remember this being one the movie my art student mother made me watch so I became “cultured.” Honestly, I’m grateful for that, because this film is really beautiful. I’ve started to connect with this movie more and more as I’ve grown up and became the guy with all the unbelievable stories that no one believes until the people who were also there came around.

Hidden gem? I don't know a single person who hasnt seen or loved this movie. It was a huge DVD seller vack in the day, very popular rental, I saw it in a packed theater (did not care for it). Don't call popular things gems just because you're too young to remember them.

I saw it was a good movie Little heavy on the surrealism which i think worked for it being entertaining n interesting, but let it down in terms of being able to feel jappy, sad or scared for charecter arcs n decisions they make not saying this is wrong or bad!!! but it becomes the lead role guiding emotional response to the film. Instead of it being used to develop an understanding of a charecter to make them seem real. But that wouldnt have worked with big fish my garanfathers stories were similar dont let the truth get in the way of a good story i think was his reasoning and thats all blokes in pubs would do back then have yarns or trade war stories. his generation had huge social groups they belonged to and had known for a long time all raising families around similar times staying connected wives would ring other wives, men would drink at bowling clubs but would have a larger social event being bbq at someones place or function st the club were u would be expected to socialise ad a couple not individually.
