I am so pleased with seeing a person that actually tries to analyze the meaning behind this definitely unusual and sometimes unpleasant scenery. Many people feel so repelled by their videos and vocals that they just can't judge their songs seriously. It seems as if they're personally offended by their songs.
I think what throws some (simple) people off it that they are "smiling" throughout. Simple people will think they are loving the idea of setting fire to themselves, love the idea of decapitation, etc. If you don't think about what happens in Russia and how that must make people feel and instead you think "Russia -> stereotypical evil people -> so these people are evil", then you very quickly come to the conclusion that these should be vile, insensitive, violence-loving Russians. Normally I wouldn't have listened to the song either, but I have focussed on the issues a bit more, the last couple of months and that has given me insight in (part of) what is going on in Russia (and Belarus, where I have a penpal now) and how most of the popular songs sing (in secret hints and double-meanings) of the dragging tiredness and 'god I am done with this"-feeling of being surpressed and under constant threat of your own government. So I can see the "emptyness" she is conveying with her eyes, and the "I'm so done I am losing my mind"-atmosphere that's going on. But again, I have done a tiny bit of research. If I hadn't, I might've gone down the same "popular" train of thought as well and concluded they are promoting violence.

Reading this some how gave me the permission to cry too. I’ve been a fan since the start of them and watched a great break down from another channel, “Natasha’s Adventures”. I am an empath but was raised in an environment that made me need to shut down so I just broke down with the March bit where they blew up the stuffed animal because I just really felt it. I hate that kids are robbed of being children and innocent and have to harden their heart.
Same here, but I have grown up in a country where free speech is not an issue and neither was it in my family. I've been very privileged. It did remind me of the moment where (despite ofcourse having _heard_ of abusive parents) I once spoke to someone with abusive parents, that didn't feel safe at home. It hit me like a train to see his hatred and fear towards his parents and how I couldn't relate to it, apart from maybe the fear towards my highschool-bullies. I later worked with kids (Pedagogic Worker) and saw a child being mistreated by his father. I stood up for the kid and corrected the father's behaviour, who shouted at me to not get involved. I repeated myself, but only made things worse appareantely, while the other teacher gleefully (the bitch) asked what kindof punishment the kid would receive at home. The kid was the so-called 'troublemaker' so she hated him. That morning, I had carefully helped him by bringing him new trousers, because he peed in his original trousers in fear (which I thought was strange, since he was nearly 11.) It still makes me upset, since I had to leave suddenly for my own wellbeing (I was taken away from the internship by my mentor after the colleagues threw food at me and threathened me) and did not have a chance to get people from child-protection-services involved to help that child. And it still eats me up nowadays, I tear up and I feel so angry at this injustice. And this situation with Russia gives me the same feeling.
Your host mum is very nice. I think she's open minded and above all modern. She listens to this kind of music very carefully and her comments are truly amazing. Thanks a lot for this great video

I loved this video so much! I'm a huge fan of izpeak. It's not very common for Americans to fully grasp the depth of their music. It's so cool to see the cultural and generational exchange. I love that your American mom has such an amazing insight and openness to such music!!!! Much love from Virginia, USA.
Wow Zack you really demonstrate great depth in this video. You and this woman have a wonderful connection. I sense a deep feelings of affection between you. These videos in a really something I wouldn’t not have figured to have come out of Russia. Your ability to present the music video to your host mom and then capture her reactions and really go very deep into the concepts within this material was very interesting. Her warmth and openness to experience this with you is very beautiful. You’ve captured a very special moment with your friend. You seem to have wisdom far beyond your years. When you find another person you can connect with so intimately and intellectually, that is something very rare and precious.
Thank you for this video. Your host mum is amazing, very open-minded and smart. Even a lot of IC3PEAK fans didn't understand the meanings so quickly. The songs and their videos are so impressive. The only thing, I don't know, if you're right is about Плак-Плак, that she takes the role of the husband. I remember an interview with Nastya (sadly I don't remember where), where she said something like "I don't want, that a women kill her husband, i want a society, where no women has to get in a situation to have think about as only solution to get out of that."
In my opinion the chorus about golden chains and joints is represented from the face of politicians. They steal money from budget and live in gold, while there’s a “swamp” around them where ordinary people live. While people get arrested in streets, they sit in their expensive flats relaxed with joints etc.
IC3PEAK has an interesting progression, the earlier music they put out in English is very experimental and honestly a bit abrasive even for my ears and I am a hardcore and metal fan for my main genres. Now they have progressed to a point that is very trap influenced. I hear a strong 90s memphis rap influence in songs like Fairytale. Still the vocal style is truly unique. My one critique is based around the percussion instrumentals. In my opinion the percussion is too striped back and would benefit from a more pronounced presence. This would help drive the songs even more. I am curious to see what their new music will sound like. I have a feeling they will continue to integrate English into the songs and collaborate more with artists like Ghostemane
Well, you don't have to wonder anymore. You'll definitely love their new song, "Dead but Pretty." It has more metal influences, and a little bit of basic English.
@@shipwreck9146 Yeah seems like my prediction on their progression was actually pretty accurate. Their three most recent singles (Vampir, Worm and Dead but Pretty) are pretty good. I honestly didn't like any of them during first listen but after a few more times hearing them I definitely enjoy them. Let's see if these singles are part of an upcoming album or are just standalone songs.
@@RockyPondProductions Definitely pretty impressed by your prediction. That's a good music genre progression analysis skill. They released Vampir first, and I didn't really listen to metal before, so it took me a few listens to get used to it. And now I'm drinking blook like cherry coke, I wish I had a soul. I think they used these three songs as a progression to more metal. Vampir, Worm and Dead but Pretty form a spectrum between trap and metal. (with vampir having the most trap influences, and dead by pretty having the most metal) I'm really hoping they're part of a new album.
You're so lucky your host mom was so nice, and I'm glad you were able to stay in the Midwest. Minnesota is beautiful and so much to see besides the twin cities. I'm from Wisconsin.
The video symbolism also demonstrates the transmission of the bad patterns from parents to children. As a result, the children will repeat this awful doom in their own lives. The dance on the head of the girl is the thoughts implanted by the parents and their violence.
I've seen children grow up to become better than their parents and they have witnessed violence and they shy away from it in their adult life. But sadly, many ideed hate the violence, but have been taught that it is normal and will _still_ somehow repeat the cycle. I used to date a man who had witnessed his parents fight, physically and emotionally. And he hated them for it, he hadn't received any love from anyone. I thought that I could give him love, show him that the world was not so bad. But (amongst many problems) he was a drinker and he was very suspicious of people that were too friendly. I also, appareantely, looked a bit like his mother when she was younger. And I looked like two ex-girlfriends (one died and one dumped him.) As a result, I was representing many women in his life and he struggled with the feelings towards me. I'm simplifying it all, but it boiled down to the fact that whenever his mom called him, and they had a fight and he had been drinking, he'd vent the anger on me later. I (after having been bullied my entire life) thought I deserved it and that I had been annoying and difficult. His friends acted the same way as him. It escalated after a while, to where he felt comfortable showing me his anger outside the house. (I have only recently come to realise how I was never allowed to be anywhere on my own, other than perhaps in a girls-store. But I did not buy groceries on my own or went to the city on my own, when I was with him. He did not want me to leave his sight when we were outside.) One day he told me to 'Walk on!' and pushed me to walk in front of him, on the street. I was distracted and saw something that I wanted to show him He again pushed me and repeated loudly WALK ON! So I walked on. Then I turned around and noticed something in a shoppingwindow. I stopped again and said; 'Hey, look, that un-sell-able vase has been sold! Wow, that must've taken a year. I wonder if they sold it or-' and he screamed 'WALK ON!' and pushed me só hard that I fell against a pole that stuck out from the ground (to indicate the end of the pedestrian-street.) He thought I 'disobeyed' and pushed me again, I tripped over a streettile and nearly fell, I held onto the pole and I suddenly burst into tears (because I was being punished for falling) and I couldn't stop my tears and the loud gasping that came with it. He grabbed my shoulder and hissed in my ear; 'STOP FUCKING CRYING! People are looking at us! They think I am abusing you or something!!!' I looked around and indeed, a few women on the opposite side of the street were looking at me concerned. I looked away and dried my tears and we walked on. We did not speak about it again, I just made sure not to stop walking anymore and not to distract him on the way home or do anything else to annoy him, until ofcourse he broke up with me and I did not take him back and he burned my art and paintings to punish me for it. That is the short version, I've kept it light. No need to add more. I am busy with a poem for Saint Nicolasday here and I have júst realised I am better off writing poems for everyone individually (15 people) instead of one big poem and so..I have some work to do xD
First learned about IC3PEAK from the Yeah Russia channel. I don’t know how popular this band is among Russian youth. This is not a band I listen to in order to relax, but I can certainly appreciate their experimental, provocative style, as well as their passion for calling for actions. Is there an effort by the government to censor them? If so I won’t be surprised. Your host mom is a very sweet and open-minded lady. It’s lovely when you can discuss such serious issues with someone, especially so when it is with the older generation.
Yeah, Russian youth listens to IC3PEAK. This musical group is usually banned from holding concerts, they were taken away by the police, and their songs are included at rallies against the power. This is one of those groups that is not going to remain silent, even if they are trying to take away the rights and freedom of speech from Russians. I love their creativity and support their views. I hope Russia will be free soon!
I think, you already read under their last video "Kiss of death" that they were on a blacklist for concerts and even their VK (equal to FB in Russia) was closed by Russian government and the members of IC3PEAK are living now in EU. btw, they will make a tour in US in October.
Boo-hoo is not from the man's perspective. It's from the daughter (when the female is wearing 2 braids) who is missing her dad and from the mother (when the braid is around her head) who just got fed up at some point and commits a crime in desperation
They released this song after the decriminalisation of domestic violence law was passed … also ridiculously dangerous for the children too- I’ve read about abuse cases that would make your heart stop. I disagree about her singing from the man’s perspective in boohoo.. I reckon she’s saying that this is the inevitable outcome of someone who’s been pushed to the edge (there’s only so much someone can take. I was texting you and waiting for you till daylight You don’t answer my calls anymore Every night I leave a tooth under my pillow Begging heaven to bring you back I always was a good girl - I never was bad All my life I was acting just right Now I’m fed up with crying and suffering You never know when you gonna die anyway [Bridge] La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la [Chorus] My mother taught me to obey my man I don’t listen to her so I do as I want I don’t follow my father’s rules, too Instead of a star, I’m wishing on a grenade My mother taught me to obey my man I don’t listen to her so I do as I want I don’t follow my father’s rules, too Instead of a star, I’m wishing on a grenade [Bridge] I wish to hug you as I used to do Then I have to dig out your body Your cold bones are laying somewhere down there One day flowers will bloom in this mourned land [Pre-Verse] Boo-hoo-boo-hoo Boo-hoo-boo-hoo [Verse 2] Your brains are all over the wall I got so angry, I’m so sorry! I saw you dead in my dreams for a hundred times I have no fear of death at all I always was a good girl - I never was bad All my life I was acting just right Now I’m fed up with crying and suffering You never know when you gonna die anyway [Chorus] My mother taught me to obey my man I don’t listen to her so I do as I want I don’t follow my father’s rules, too Instead of a star, I’m wishing on a grenade My mother taught me to obey my man I don’t listen to her so I do as I want I don’t follow my father’s rules, too Instead of a star, I’m wishing on a grenade [Bridge] La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la La-la-la-la-la-la-la [Outro] I wish to hug you as I used to do Then I have to dig out your body Your cold bones are laying somewhere down there One day flowers will bloom in this mourned land She makes so many references to being female??
Maybe both? The way she holds the man that tenderly lays in the grass, reminded me more of a man mourning the wife he killed, but somehow also still thinking 'well, if only she hadn't been so-' etc. I even thought that he was her, for a second, when he laid in the grass. His face looked very soft in comparison to his usual triangular (if you know what I mean...sharp) face. She is the one that looks more sharp and 'pointy' in her face and behaviour, her movements are more rigid and he is more soft and is making music on the piano. I think the idea is maybe to do both. The lyrics are about the woman, but in the video, she also kindof plays the man, I think.
I love seeing people from a different generation react to modern music, i always think it’s more interesting than people our age, only because we’ve exposed to more experimental music because of the digital age, rather than the previous generation, most music was through the radio

Having spent quite some time in russia, growing up with the culture and having lived there for a few years, I can say that the 'для понта' - for show off - is, at least in my interpretation, a critique towards the way war is used as an aesthetic in russia. Even when I was young, there were constantly symbolisms of war, like a canone on the main square of my babushkas town, camouflage, it's on the tv, it's just constantly there. Then, when I lived in moscow, I got to see the military parade on the day of victory. I always thought of the day of victory russia mourns the ones who have fallen in ww2, which were 24.000.000 people in the soviet union. Just a day to pay respect and show gratitude towards the ones who have fallen. But when I saw the parade, I was almost scared. Dozens of tanks just in the middle of moscow, helicopters, just all that army equipment used as nothing but to show off. Military is also such a huge topic in politics, it's almost overtaking everything else and it was even before the war in Ukraine started. Sure, russia needs a strong army, they are, to put it mildly, not besties to almost the whole rest of the world. But using it so cheaply just to show that you have it is so stupid and tasteless. All the streets have to be repared after the day of victory, every single year. It's so brutal and disgusting.
Hey Zack! This is quite similar to Witch House, Dark Future Garage, and Dark CyberPunk that I listen to much of the time - a lot of which comes from Russian artists. Incidentally, I am about the same age as your host mom...😁
32:35 I think the black soup represents the truth and grandma represents “Russia” is trying to protect it from people and when they “people” tasted it they saw truth and created opinion “teddy bear”
Blak blak (Boo hoo) is from the perspective of the daughter. You see her in the beginning going room to room and then finds her parents fighting in the diorama. She later probably sees mom killed dad and now while they are now free of his oppression she still wishes she could hug him.
That was certainly different, Zack. I can't keep up with all the new vocalists and groups in America let alone Russia. Even so, the group IC3PEAK uses stark imagery and lyrics to make their point. They say they create "audiovisual terror." (Please explain the name IC3PEAK.) I looked up some information, and I found out that the government began to crack down on a new generation of Russian musicians in November 2018. A rapper name Husky was arrested An article said that Putin said the new music and art is based on sex, drugs, and protest. The article said that Alexei Navalny wanted young protestors to participate in anti-government demonstrations. The song "Death No More" by IC3PEAK caused trouble Some of their concerts were cancelled. I also learned that there are music videos by "zombie babushkas" and "gothic maidens." You'll have to explain that. America has no problem with such stark protest videos. The bottom line is if it sells and if money can be made. I rather doubt if China would tolerate such groups there.
Please maybe do a follow up video after the other people she shared them with have responded! It would be wonderful! This was great!!! Please do some more analysis/explaining of their music and mv’s sometime 🤘🏻🤓love to learn more through them
Very insightful video, Zack. Question -- are you concerned at all about being labeled as a dissident or a troublemaker when you get home? Or perhaps criticism of the regime is tolerated to a certain extent. BTW your host mom is a super intelligent lady. Best wishes to both of you.
It may give him troubles in future if this becomes viral or he himself becomes very viral. They do care and track everything, people get jailed and fined for likes and reposts, but unless you are either a) very unlucky or b) the stuff you posted/uploaded/reposted gained a lot of attention you’re “good to go”.
IC3PEAK is intense!! I never heard of them before this video... I like this format, but I don't know if I can watch 40 minutes worth of this particular style of music, even with great discussion 😅 See you in another video, Zack 💚💖
IC3PEAK is a show band .. interesting ...great visuals... maybe ask host mom to show you how close the local Army recruitment center is from her house, every local mall has one. Turn on the news, Listen to the AM news radio and count the number of shootings that are reported. Enjoy your stay in America
So: 1. 'I'm like a stranger in my own family' - probably not related to the family, but more about family = country 2. 'I'm fed up with crying and suffering' - so she probably does not take a male role, but did not listen to her family (My mother taught me to obey my man..) and stopped crying and suffering by killing her husband. This song is more about changing the things how they are now, being able as woman to push back even if your father did it to your mom even if your mom said to stay calm etc. 3. 'whole russia is watching me' - this song not about teenagers, that's definitely about politicians, 'I feel my eyes with kerosine, let it all burn' - more about as a politician I don't see ppl problems and I don't care 4. I think you actually got the main idea correctly - young generation should escape soviet union vision Anyways, your thoughts could also be the case - that's how great and talanted this group is. Addressing my comment to someone who will find more sense in such vision =)

I am so pleased with seeing a person that actually tries to analyze the meaning behind this definitely unusual and sometimes unpleasant scenery. Many people feel so repelled by their videos and vocals that they just can't judge their songs seriously. It seems as if they're personally offended by their songs.
I'm attracted to it
I think what throws some (simple) people off it that they are "smiling" throughout.
If I hadn't, I might've gone down the same "popular" train of thought as well and concluded they are promoting violence.

this moved me to tears. the art, the discussion, the empathy, and the desperation behind all this
Reading this some how gave me the permission to cry too.
That morning, I had carefully helped him by bringing him new trousers, because he peed in his original trousers in fear (which I thought was strange, since he was nearly 11.)
It still makes me upset, since I had to leave suddenly for my own wellbeing (I was taken away from the internship by my mentor after the colleagues threw food at me and threathened me) and did not have a chance to get people from child-protection-services involved to help that child.

Wow. Really enjoyed this. Riva what a wonderful wise woman to have as a host Moma! She really critiques this in an articulate way.
In my opinion the chorus about golden chains and joints is represented from the face of politicians. They steal money from budget and live in gold, while there’s a “swamp” around them where ordinary people live. While people get arrested in streets, they sit in their expensive flats relaxed with joints etc.
I understood the part about chains and joints as representing the politicians too.
(with vampir having the most trap influences, and dead by pretty having the most metal)
I'm really hoping they're part of a new album.

wife killed her husband as a self-defence and went to prison. it"s a very common story in russia
I thought I had picked up a fair few things in the video but you both have made me think about all the things I missed, so thank you very much! 👍
The thing about the second song is also about how lots of the women in russian prisons are there for answering their husbands aggression
And I looked like two ex-girlfriends (one died and one dumped him.)
As a result, I was representing many women in his life and he struggled with the feelings towards me.
He did not want me to leave his sight when we were outside.)
One day he told me to 'Walk on!' and pushed me to walk in front of him, on the street. I was distracted and saw something that I wanted to show him
He again pushed me and repeated loudly WALK ON! So I walked on. Then I turned around and noticed something in a shoppingwindow.
I stopped again and said; 'Hey, look, that un-sell-able vase has been sold! Wow, that must've taken a year. I wonder if they sold it or-' and he screamed 'WALK ON!' and pushed me só hard that I fell against a pole that stuck out from the ground (to indicate the end of the pedestrian-street.)
He thought I 'disobeyed' and pushed me again, I tripped over a streettile and nearly fell, I held onto the pole and I suddenly burst into tears (because I was being punished for falling) and I couldn't stop my tears and the loud gasping that came with it.
He grabbed my shoulder and hissed in my ear; 'STOP FUCKING CRYING! People are looking at us! They think I am abusing you or something!!!'
I looked around and indeed, a few women on the opposite side of the street were looking at me concerned.

She makes so many references to being female??

Both of you are so articulate and insightful. Thank you so much for sharing!!
I would love to see a channel from your US host mom. She is fascinating.

“This is your militarization it’s not a real power” ominous words, at least for now, it seems.
Blak blak (Boo hoo) is from the perspective of the daughter. You see her in the beginning going room to room and then finds her parents fighting in the diorama. She later probably sees mom killed dad and now while they are now free of his oppression she still wishes she could hug him.

The amazing Mongolian metal band is called Hu.

So:
1. 'I'm like a stranger in my own family' - probably not related to the family, but more about family = country
3. 'whole russia is watching me' - this song not about teenagers, that's definitely about politicians, 'I feel my eyes with kerosine, let it all burn' - more about as a politician I don't see ppl problems and I don't care
4. I think you actually got the main idea correctly - young generation should escape soviet union vision
Anyways, your thoughts could also be the case - that's how great and talanted this group is.
