When I try to export usd out from Houdini the file size is only 1kb and nothing comes into Unreal Engine. Unreal cannot even see the file. I tried exporting from Blender and had no problems. Is this some kind of limitation with Houdini apprentice?
From my experience just doing small stuff USD is nice because all my files are already in USD format because I mainly render in Solaris. If your goal however is to render in unreal you're much better off creating uassets instead of USD components and referencing them into unreal with engine for materials and such. I've also not had a great time with animations and USD to unreal just heavy files overall.
For reference the scene I'm testing now I brought in the vegetation with USD since I already had that file, then I wrote out fluid sims as alembic and whitewater as hbjson.
Great content Josh! How big is your terrain? I have a 3km by 3km terrain in Houdini and I am wondering if USD is the best practice to import it into UE5.
Mines only 120x120m, if your end goal is to render in unreal then USD is not the best choice. The amount of time setting up USD assets would be better spent creating uassets and if you want to use procedural tools from Houdini combine uassets with Houdini engine.

Yes Houdini apprentice can only export obj files. It can export USD files as well but they can only be opened back up in Houdini.
@@latimerias Hi Josh thanks for the response and answering my question.
if u say this isn't the best way to bring things to unreal which is actually the right method?
