The U.N. Should Admit Palestine as a Full Member State

  • On September 23, 2011, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appeared before the U.N. General Assembly to request full membership for the State of Palestine. After 20 years of failed talks with Israel, can this plea to the international community be the only path left to a two-state solution, or have the Palestinians set the peace process back by bypassing negotiations?

I really like this host's style of moderating, he's decisive and no nonsense, "with respect". I'd live to be an audience member. Dr. Bargutti made me cry at the end. It's very rare that I hear Palestinians speak and don't feel their sincerity. I totally understand that all they want is to be seen and have their humanity reaffirmed. I hardly ever hear hate or violence, mostly hurt. On the Israeli defender side, I hear a lot rigidity, arrogance, disrespect. I'm so glad no one was fooled by that woman's "sincere" question and the host had her explain herself and Bargutti called her put right away. I have some Israelis and Jews from the diaspora try to advance the position that Palestinians are non entities and it's truly disrespectful. This was 10 years ago now and what Levy was warning against is precisely where we are today where the Israeli government is further to the right and violence has taken over as the only solution. There's no peace because it was never part of the Zionist's plan. If they are to make space for all Jews to have a homeland, Palestinians have to either emigrate elsewhere or be killed off. It seems they've opted for the latter.

When the Zionists came to Palestine as immigrants from Russell, Europe and Ethiopia, they did not content themselves with living with us in peace, no, but rather they stole our homes and our land and carried out ethnic cleansing and changed the name of Palestine to Israel and made it theirs... This is all because of the British occupation that allowed them to immigrate to us and then handed over our land to them . Freedom for Palestine from the river to the sea

26:21 "It has no monopoly over the forces of violence in its society, in short it has no control over the guns, all of the guns, in its society! I would argue that critically important to statehood."
Did he just state that the USA lacks the capacity to statehood? Since the USA does not control all the guns in its society and is in fact legislated against control over all guns

A seldom considered fact...Resolution 273 granting Israel full UN membership states as follows...Recalling its resolutions of 29 November 1947 and 11 December 1948 and taking note of the declarations and explanations made by the representatives of the Government of Israel before the Ad Hoc Political Committee in respect of the implementation of the said resolutions.
This did not mean to continue expropriating land and expand illegal settlements. Israel's membership is null and void!

Just because the Palestinian people did not in their past have a country on the land does not mean they have no right to their own nation. They have occupied that land for thousands of years, they should not be forced to move somewhere else if they want their own nation. They have every right to establish their own nation in their homeland, which is in the area they now occupy. More than that, the Israelis cannot use their past to violate international law and the rights of others, no one can.

Palestinians did have a country under the Mandate system. John Quigley has covered this point extensively in the book 'The Statehood of Palestine'. They had distinct laws, borders, treaties, financial administration, conferred nationality and immigration laws.

And the name Palestine was used to refer to the entire region by Herodotus in the 5th century BCE, thus showing that name has too been used for over 2,000 years. And going back to the earliest point, texts at the Egyptian temple Medinet Habu dating to the 12thcentury BCE, use the term Peleset, although as you pointed out it was used to refer to the people of that region of Egypt who were part of the Sea Peoples.
But nevertheless, the term Palestine is just as old as the term Israel.

Sure there’s plenty being done. Israel keeps encroaching on everything that’s Palestinian until there won’t be a Palestine. Indigenous Palestinians lived in Palestine long before the Jews came along and remained there until 1896 when Zionists crept in like termites and locus, claiming they are doing God’s work as they make indigenous people suffer and die or flee with no right of return allowed.

Genetic studies done on modern-day Palestinians do in fact show that they have ancestry in many of the different Semitic and even non-Semitic ethnic groups that have inhabited the Levant over those thousands of years.
The truth is that discerning the native and rightful inhabitants of the Israel/Palestine area is incredibly difficult, owing to thousands of years of migration throughout the Middle East and intermingling of the various groups, mostly the Semitic ones.

The point of bringing up the term 'Peleset' and Herodotus is to show that the name 'Palestine' or its root derivatives are just as old as the name 'Israel'. I wasn't arguing that the region has been known as Palestine just as long, but rather refuting your claim about the name Israel predating the name Palestine. The additional point of bringing up Herodotus was to show that the region, not the polity, has been referred to as Palestine for over 2,000 years.

  • @Ngamotu83
    @Ngamotu83 11 років тому +2

You can't just have an entirely new population immigrate into a region, have them breed with the locals and genetically dominate the locals. At most, the locals, their offspring at least will acquire a few genes from the foreigners. But by and large, they will still retain a strong lineage to the pre-migrant local ancestors, more so than with the migrant ancestors. Again, you're ignoring the entire science of genetics.

How many people do we imprison on an annual basis? How many women are raped every year? How many people are robbed? How many children are molested? How long has it been since slavery was abolished? How many wars have we been involved in? Yeah, we must be the most civil people in the world and have every right to criticize others!

Considering that Arabs created one of the largest empires in history it would have been impossible for them to outnumber the local populations they conquered, even in span of 1,500 years. The scientifically verified minor genetic overlap between Arabs and Palestinians does not mean Palestinians are FULL Arabs, especially when genetic studies show they are more closely related to Jews. You can repeat the census polls all you want, but they use categories that are based on out-dated data.

  • @Ngamotu83

The Palestinians aren't occupiers. They are native inhabitants who were converted to Arab culture and language during the conquests in the 7th century. Hence why they are now considered Arabs despite having ancestry in the Canaanites.

You're right. You can't convert a race. But just as with the Egyptians the Palestinians were converted by the Arabs to Arab culture and language. That didn't change the fact Palestinians are NOT DESCENDED from Arabs. Palestinian ancestry ultimately traces back to the Canaanites despite them having lost their original culture and language.

    Shalom Aleichem
Thanks for the message, but, remember, history is a result of now, and now future is apart of the now moment.
The current situation, both positive and negative, is predicated upon inaccuracies in history, ethical approaches to the current situation, which would remedy the issue of undocumented migrants who have been in the land long before many of the descendants of early Jews who are there now.
Does time abolish heritage or rights to land, not in this case, because, we are talking about a Kingdom, 2 Kingdoms, that have been illegally occupied by every Tyrant from the 2nd century until this day.
The Persian anti Bedouin story is heartbreaking. the massacre in Syria by Assads father, all of this is due to the original sin of the invasion of Judah and Israel by Rome.
For that breach is what became a stepping stone for everything post AD70.
This you can not challenge, if this is the case, then, the entire notion of anyone other than Jews in Judea and Israeli Kingdoms, is based in the residue of an invasion or mix marriages.
The fact there is animosity to the descendants for ancient Judeans, mean that individuals seek to destroy the first cause and create new causes that were born out of error.
You can’t have a resistance and claim territory from what has been unlawfully stolen, and then in the future seek to claim and act as if your recent history predates ancient history .

If Mexico slowly started taking their land back and Americans were treated like Palestinians are treated now.. that would be ok because it was Mexicos land first... right? Those Jews that occupied the land even after it was conquered by the Byzantines and Arabs (Byzantium was Christian), were the ones that mingled and bred with the Arab immigrants. Modern-day Palestinians, being descended from that mingling of Jews and Arabs, will as a consequence have ancestry in the ancient Jews. That is an undeniable biological fact. If you continue to deny it and instead persist with this idea Palestinians are full Arabs, then you prove your complete ignorance of genetics.

  • @Ngamotu83

It wasn't the original homeland of the Jews, the Canaanites were there before them. And the region has been referred to as Palestine or other Semitic language variants for 3,000 years. Genetically modern-day Palestinians aren't Arabs, having roots with the ancient inhabitants that predate both Jewish and Arab control.

The Palestinians are descended from populations that inhabited the lands of Israel-Palestine prior to the Arab Conquests, populations that are Canaanite in origin, genetics, archaeology and history prove that. Just as the Egyptians were converted to Arab culture and language by the Conquests, so were the Palestinians, even though neither the Egyptians nor Palestinians are descended from Arabs.

When the original Palestine is partitioned the state of Palestine was created. Not just Israel.
It was an oversight that the two state solution had been put into Reality.
Why would it be only Israel.

Alex is a very semitic name. You must be from the mid east! Britain, Germany & other nations were named by the Romans. Who cares where Palestine got it's name from Your argument is like saying that a Briton who has German ancestry has the right to go to Germany & kick out the native population because their ancestors lived there 2000 years ago. That is actual insanity. The Jewish kingdoms of Palestine lasted little over 500 years COMBINED! It was part of Palestine's history & does not define it

How did those who performed the censuses define Arab identity? What parameters did they use to establish whether someone was Arab? To what extent are those definitions challenged by more recent discoveries? To what extent does modern genetics require us to rethink what it means to be Arab? And Palestinian for that matter? In light of newly acquired knowledge in what ways MUST we rethink what it means to be Arab, Palestinian, Jew, etc.?

Actually you're wrong. History documents how many populations in the Middle East were converted to Arabs, making them in a cultural sense Arabs but not descended from them. The Palestinians are one of those people. It was almost the case with Persians as well, who the Umayyad Caliphs in the 7th century tried to convert into Arabs, with the intent of Islamizing them.
You demonstrated quite clearly you don't know the histories of the Palestinian and Arabs.

  • @Ngamotu83
    @Ngamotu83 11 років тому

But they never exterminated the local populations. That's the important point. The Arab rulers, post-conquest did not eliminate the local populations. Instead they let them remain where they where, letting them continue their own way of living but bringing it all under Arab rule. That is how a significant Jewish population managed to survive under Arab then Ottoman rule right up until the formation of the modern state of Israel. It was the same with the Palestinians.

And who were those Jews who had a continuous presence in Palestine? What language did they speak? What culture did they have? How did they dress? The fact is the Jews of Palestine were Palestinian Jews, as Palestinians are Christians & Muslim. Yes the Jews had a continuous presence but they were Palestinian & they shared Palestinian history, culture, music, food etc... Don't you have any shame trying to justify ethnic cleansing and colonialism? Honestly it is sickening.

"I think that yes, Hamas is a terrorist group, but no, not everyone is a terrorist. You are stereotyping, and that is what is wrong with this world."
A large majority of Palestinians voted what you call a terrorist group into power. *That* is what's wrong with this world. What you'd suggesting is essentially the same as arguing that Nazism isn't bad, most Nazis never killed a single Jew, demonizing Nazis is just a meaningless generalization.

Israel also voted Terrorist groups into Parliament. The Irgun and Lehi have provided prominent members of the Israeli political elite. Begin, Shamir, Eshkol and Sharon all became prime ministers. Yet, they were all involved in terrorism or genocide.

It's not bull, it is the truth. Genetic studies of the various peoples of the Middle East places the Palestinians as being more closely related to Jews than to Arabs, with a common ancestry pre-dating the Judean era. The Palestinians are no more Arab than the Egyptians, who were only converted to the Arab culture and language but are not descended from Arabs.
Considering I am relying on the most accurate up to date research, I'm not the one denying history, you are.

I don't think we want to be going down the language route, because the inevitable final conclusion will be that Hebrew and Arabic are Semitic languages, and that Jews and Arabs are Semitic people within the Afro-Asiatic ethno-linguistic family. Rendering that point moot. It also raises doubts about why one Semitic people are native to a land they are NOT the original occupants of, but another Semitic people aren't, even though they have just as long history with that land as the other occupants.

It is actually possible to be Arabized. When the Muslim armies first spread out from the Arab Peninsula in the 7th century only Arabs could be Muslims; for someone to convert to Islam they had to become an Arab. That's partly why Persia was not Islamized until the 10th century, and even remained Persian despite becoming Islamic.
And genetics is the best means for establishing whether a person or population is actually Arab, or a member of any other ethnicity. For you to dismiss it is pitiful.

While it is true that Palestinians have never had their political independence, they and their ancestors have inhabited the region for at least 2,000. You cannot say they don't have the right to independence in a land they have inhabited for over 2,000 years. They have lived there for that long, it is their home; you cannot tell them to go anywhere else. You cannot tell them they don't have the right to be politically independent of a government, in their homeland, they don't agree with.

Of course they were listed as Arabs because they are Arab! Just as Arab Jews are considered Arab & Arab Christians are considered Arab. You cannot get your head around the idea that Arab culture became the predominant culture of that region as Christian culture became the dominant culture of Europe. I can give you a list of Palestinian family names who trace their roots hundreds even thousands of years in Palestine. Give me ONE Jewish family name who immigrated to Palestine who can say the same

Just as stupid as saying God gave them the land, right? You still avoided the first question I asked. I'll rephrase it.... if Native Americans got a hold of a weapon that could defeat the United States... would it be right for them to take America back? How can we end future wars if we don't let the past be the past? Don't you think at some point we have to move forward? So at this point it would be wrong for Israel to completely take over Palestine.. those peoples have been there generations.

Looking further into the genetic studies doen some startling things come up. Those genetic studies show that Palestinians and Jews are near identical genetically, with those similarities most likely dating to pre-Judean times. The slight exception is a small mixing of Arab genes most likely from when the Jews who stayed in Palestine mingled with the Arab immigrants and converted to Islam. But nevertheless, Jews and Palestinians are very closely related, to the point they are near identical.

Arabization is real. If you don't believe me then where do you think the Egyptians went? You know, the people that inhabited Egypt for centuries under the Pharaohs, Greeks, Romans, and then Byzantines. They were converted to Arab culture and language, which is how Egyptians today are considered Arab. The same goes for Syria, Palestine, Iraq, and Sudan. The Arab Conquerors even tried it in Persia, but in that one case they failed.

  • @Ngamotu83

You have made it abundantly clear you are not capable of critically engaging with new evidence. All facts I put forward to prove Palestinians are NOT Arabs and are instead descended from the Canaanites are immediately rejected because you are convinced centuries old censuses must ALWAYS be right. You cannot fathom the possibility the people who performed those censuses were wrong in how they defined Arab identity, because you rely entirely and wrongly on just that one piece of evidence.

Yet, nine years later, no Palestinian state. Mustafa Barghouthi said there was a need to correct a historical mistake since 1947? The mistake was on the part of the Palestinians and the community of UN Arab nations. NOT Israel or the other state members of the UN who voted for partition -- which was effectively a vote for a Jewish & Arab state, side-by-side. Sorry Mr.Barghouthi, this was the fault of the Arab states, further exacerbated by waging civil war within Israel the day after the partition vote, November 29 1947. And then the full-scale war when Israel declared statehood in May of '48. It never ceases to amaze how the Arabs always play the victim when they were the ones who were the designers of their own downfall, as far as a Palestinian state was concerned.
