1st. The country was not in half. It's more like 2/3 are west Germany. There was no 50/50 split in economy, factories and population.
2nd. The ussr and it's people suffered more in wwII than Germany and especially west Germany. In belorussia alone 600 villages were burned with the inhabitants still inside. This was going on all over the ussr. The German troops burned villages and leveled towns. Massacered people or kidnapped them for slave labor in their factories. For the past 30 years before WWII the ussr suffered famines, orphant crisis of 7 million children were without parents after the civil war. 80% of railroads gone with factories and mines reduced to fractions of what they were again, after the civil war.

Oh yeah. Lots of countries were flying stuff in and out of West berlin. It was one the richest cities in the world and other side of wall was poorest city in world. That was the plan. Make west Germany super rich so the liberal communists would be jealous and finally give in and want to join in on the wealth. They thought socialism was better but they got tired of being hungry and watching the West Germans get richer from capitalism. Now the morons want to try socialism again.

Lmao, you haven't considered their population growth rate and gdp per capita. Trust me, they're not doing so well.
Edit: Sorry, I should've researched a bit before making these statements.
Nigeria is on the decline and South Africa(my country) is set to take over the position of wealthiest African nation by 2020 or so. Nigeria population is 190 million and South Africa's is 57 million, making us significantly more wealthy - definitely not my patriotic bias coming through.
Indonesia on the, other hand, may not be wealthy at the moment, but are growing at a robust(healthy) rate, and I must give credit where it's due. Not to mention that their GDP per capita PPP is at $11000, making them a relatively well developed 3rd world nation - I'd even argue that they've crossed the boundary into 1st world.

The interesting thing is that to get an actual comparison of bar size, you have to cover the lefthand side of the screen from zero to the left edge with your hand. It makes the size difference way more dramatic. According to what this data shows (which I am taking at the channel’s word) Japan is only about 1/4 the size of the US and China is only about 1/2.

The other comparison to make is a country to itself. The USSR from its 1984 peak had lost HALF ITS WEALTH by 1994, and was at less than 1/3 of that peak from 1998-2002. It's impossible for the vast majority of the world's citizens to imagine living in a country which became literally HALF as wealthy as it was before. Comparatively, the "recessions" we experience in the west pale.
