- I take a break from the 1959 Sprite Ariel restoration series to bring you this tour of a very special pre-war caravan to celebrate the 2020 VE Day Bank Holiday. 'Hutch' is a caravan that we've owned for a few years, and it's currently awaiting a more in-depth restoration. It's more or less preserved exactly as it left the factory 85 years ago.

A lovely review . It all looks romantically homely . I left the hospital at a couple old to live in a similar type of caravan in the December of '61 . It was so cold my mother abandoned me at a main post office so I would be taken care of . '63 was an even colder winter . It took 5 years for us to be allocated a council house , strangely there wasn't a housing shortage because they found plenty for West -Indians in the 60's .

This caravan is so beautiful. It looks like a yacht inside. I love the dark stain plywood. I wish you could’ve showed more of those secret cubbyholes drawers and cabinets

What a stunning caravan ❤️ modern day caravan makers could learn a thing or two from Hutchinson. The spring loaded plate rack is such a simple but great idea. You are lucky to own such a beautiful piece of history. Another interesting video 👍🏻👍🏻

The Venomator thanks Rog, Hutch is amazing. I don’t think many caravan designers today are caravanners, let alone interested in the history of them enough to look this far back for inspiration! The industry was a different place then - Winchester competed to be the best and their design evolution was a 50/50 partnership between their design department and customer feedback. Each year their caravans just got better and better and by the 1950s they took caravan design as far as it was possible to go and haven’t really been bettered in terms of quality, layouts, practical features and stunning design.

Your videos are great. The gas light recalled childhood Caravan holidays...though I don't think you need to remove the glass globe to light the mantle. It was often common to have a separate toilet tent next to the caravan with a chemical toilet.

David Longfoot thank you! It’s funny, you occasionally see these ideas come back as a “new” feature for new caravans. The vast majority of people working in caravan design have little experience of caravanning, let alone looking at the past to pick out some of the excellent ideas that have been forgotten about.

Fantastic video. As always, informative and so interesting. I was wondering if the one other 16 foot Winchester still exists, and if so, in what condition. Hutch looks to be in terrific condition. You guys have done a superb job. Too bad you didn't have the channel going then. It would have been great to see the process.
Michael Tutty thank you. Yes the other Winchester still exists. It actually has a hatch in the side of it to fold down. A piece of canvas covers it and it was done because the original owner was too tall for the rear bed! We keep meaning to get the two Winchester’s together.
Brilliant ! Love it. I'd have liked to hear what the gramophone really sounds like . I always fancied a Safari caravan because of that roof style but for some reason never could get one .
