I have seen people complain that the 8100 did not make the power figures it should have, that it should have been more powerful from the factory. These same people have also never driven a truck with the 8100 as well as they do not understand that pickups were never tuned for maximum power, it was maximum torque and keep the horsepower (and RPMs) down for a longer engine life. The fuel economy you have gotten is impressive.
@@Carstuff111 GM did this on purpose. The 8.1 truck cost less than the comparable Ford or Dodge truck. You could buy the parts to make your 8.1 truck stronger and still put out less than the cost of either of the other trucks.
Nice improvement. You could always pull the goose empty and see how much the weight truly affected the results. It’s about the same weight as the bumper pull with the tractor. The tractor wouldn’t have much wind resistance I wouldn’t think. Good videos. Definitely do the Duramax to see the difference and if you can get a newer L8T 6.6 gas I’d like to see that too.
I wish my 8.1 looked like that. Unfortunately it was a plow truck and beat up. I do have less miles than you. Thanks for the upload love hearing from ya.
I sure would like to take mine apart and get rid of all the rust. It's all just superficial surface rust, but with the body and everything else still attached, it would be a royal pain and probably impossible to wire wheel/brush it all off.
About 10 years ago I did have an electrician convert the ballast of each light to eliminate 250 metal halide bulbs. I’m using screw in LED bulbs at this point. I still need to upgrade to a better ballast with the traditional tube style bulb
@@truckguyjoe You're on the right track already then. Maybe Solar in the future? I don't see the value yet for 100% shop solar due to high demand things (welding, lift, etc.) but running 100% lighting and other 120V stuff (WiFi, computers, security cameras, etc.) can be done to run 100% independently. Nice business expense and possible source for emergency house power in the event of a big outage. I'm trying to figure out a solution on how I can safely backfeed into my residence as my garage has full sun and my house is almost fully shaded for most of the day.
Man... I thought my 2500Hd with 6.0 got bad mileage ..... yikes!! Towing around the same weight as your video with the gooseneck I got about 9mpg Similar weight to this video I got about 10 mpg Thats with a crew cab 4x4 4.10 geared 6.0 truck with cam, headers, and around 10.5:1 compression
@@truckguyjoe yeah I know but stock is no fun lol. I to have a play truck 96 dodge with the 12v 4wd reg cab. Once you get a taste for power it never ends. I have a set of compound turbos on it making 65-70 psi of boost.
@@SMiller5488 there's another youtuber that did that 8.8 heads and cam flash a tune on a 8.1 it was around 400hp and 500ftlb tq at 3500rpm and carried it to 5k rpms that was to the tire to.

You're right. It also did all that on 87 fuel. It out worked the v10 from both dodge and ford in the same era

Love all the data, Joe. I'm a detail oriented guy though, too. Thanks for sharing!!

Appreciate your feedback & support!
Another great video! Man that’s a nice mpg improvement. I guess I’ll be installing a towing cam and mods this winter! 👊🏼 Thanks Joe
Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback.
Few things look better than a regular cab truck pulling a John Deere on a trailer!
Agreed!
5:11 always do your thing bro 🦾🦾🦾
@@slaytanic921 appreciate you 👍
I have an 8.1in my Yukon XL that is now an 8.8. I easily outrun/out haul an stock LB7 or an LLY.
Would love to see same test with Duramax

Sweet truck .
Almost got the vette 🤣
You should try some nology spark plugs and a k&n air filter!
15k and 20k are nothing for that motor stock...we hit the scales just under 26k and it would pull Fancy Gap at 70 with the AC on
Not sure how much time you spend in that shop the LED lighting would pay for itself in about 4-6 months if you did the job yourself.

Raylar has a blower kit for the 8.1. Wonder what the cruise MPG would be? I want a blower in my suburban 2500

That is impressive mileage for sure. Those 6.0 trucks are great work horses!
@truckguyjoe Yea, it's been a good one. It doesn't make anywhere near the down low torque the 8.1 does, but with a little rpm it does fine.
Since it's just a play truck u should think about doing the 8.8l heads and cam
I did consider going that route...ultimately I went for a basically stock truck with a slight bump in performance.

What kinda gains are there with the 8.8 heads and cam?

20% lighter load 20% better mileage
A fuel injection gas engine will be effected by outside air temperature
Not sure if there was much difference
Colder always get worse gas mileage
Can you modify a 8.1-liter engine and shoot the acceleration from 0 to 100 😊
Well done sir. You want mpg's get a KIA, in the meantime I hope you get time to take it out and enjoy it.
Hey what size tires are you running on this truck ?
