  • I am contemplating switching from gas powered to electric battery powered chainsaws for fuel reduction and forest thinning work. A while back I had someone comment on one of my videos, talking about some of the advantages of using battery powered chainsaws. Specifically using them for fuels reduction in forest thinning work. For years, I have been using powerful saws like a Stihl MS 462. I like using the big saws with long bars, usually a 32 inch bar. For thinning, I like the 24 inch, but even then I sometimes miss the longer reach of the 32 inch. I discuss some of the advantages this commenter mentioned, including using solar panels to charge the chainsaw batteries. Or as he put it, making your own fuel in the woods.
The forests of the Western United States are in desperate need of fuels reduction and thinning. Overgrown forests are one of the things that are fueling the massive wildfires we have every summer, some which are even burning into urban areas.
One of the tools to fight against this is to put people on the ground with chainsaws, thinning out the forests and returning them to more of a historically natural and healthy condition. In this video I discuss some of the possible advantages of using battery powered chainsaws instead of gas powered ones. Also facing the question, are battery powered chainsaws up to the job yet?
