  • Alex Pereira isn't the best middleweight of all time or even this era. He's the UFC light heavyweight champion, but he isn't the second or even third-best light heavyweight of all time.
And yet, he's doing something we really haven't seen in the sport before as he wins and defends titles across two weight classes, all in record time.
Luke Thomas explains how Alex 'Poatan' Pereira is forcing us to rethink how we measure greatness at the highest levels of UFC and mixed martial arts (MMA).

All true but Izzy saying that was a reaction to Alex posting Izzys defeat to him on Izzys UFC timelines during Izzys pursuit of the belt and Alex was in Anderson Silvers corner when Izzy fought him so Alex was already hovering in UFC circles, that being said Alex is a bad dude

    • @JayS.-mm3qr

I wonder if Izzy ever actually went to a bar, and said that to himself, just to fully embody the true profound irony of it. That almost too unbelievable, even for a movie. Can't believe Izzy said that, and everything he was talking about actually came true, but for him. And all because he just wanted to put Alex down. And then history happened. It's nuts!
I could imagine Izzy without the title, going to a bar, raising a glass to Alex Pereira on tv, who just won another title, Izzy shaking his head and smiling and saying, "... I beat that guy, once".

If Alex moves up and somehow beats Aspinall or Jones then he will have arguably the greatest story and career in MMA history. He has done so much in a shorter time frame than ANYONE ELSE!! He is the The Biggest Big Game Hunter than everyone else by far, and that comes from his Family and genetics he has as well as the Highest IQ in the Game! He is the smartest and Best fighter in the World! Other Champions don’t Do ANY FAVORS to the UFC by saving Cards Twice in 3 events, they fight once or MAYBE twice if it’s an easy opponent. Conor had a amazing run, but he quickly turned himself in what he used to criticise in others. It's always good to remember that he never defended a belt, he won 4 and 0 defenses... Alex is a brave man, does not hold back and take risks.

That's a good definition. Pereira is going all in and hunting big game. He has made beating Jiri looks easy, but Jiri is a beast. He made Sean look like an amateur and Sean is excellent boxer. He made Hill look just silly.
He fights very often, he fights to end fights, not for pointing, he goes for the champions.

You make a great point about how unique the Pereira situation is. How weird it is that at 35+, he is suddenly the biggest star in the game. It's one thing to be this promising rising star. But as you say, 10 years ago, he was just some average fighter. Now he is doing things in the ufc that no one has done. Where did that come from!?

@@henry247 yeah, 10 years ago. The video talks about Alex fight with Levin in 2014, a fight that he lost. Pereira's record at the time was 10-3. So yeah, on that night, he was perceived as an ok, almost 27 year old fighter, who just lost.

Something should be said about his ability to connect with the people as well. He’s at an American lake right now, mobbed by American teenagers, all screaming CHAMA! and saying he’s the greatest. And he doesn’t even speak english lol It’s like Mike Tyson said: “Greatness is not guarding yourself from the people; greatness is being accepted by the people.” And I think we are witnessing something special here. Mark my words, Alex Pereira will become the world’s first 3 division Champion in MMA.

  • @f4ust85

Unpopular take: this has less to do with Pereira being the "impossible" and more to do with mma and LHW in particular behing quite mediocre compared to the competition in kickboxing - in Glory it would have been utterly crazy for some cross-over to come from wrestling or boxing and clean two divisions.

As hard as IZZY must pretend, WE ALL have to RECOGNIZE that when he is ALONE by himself… he HAS to kick himself for THAT arrogant EGO fuelled Interview he did on Australia News & for talking SO recklessly & carelessly! Fuelled by his then Unbeaten record & now Trademark Cringe-filled Egotistical Outbursts…. Totally feeling himself AS Untouchable & Invincible, WELL & truly ON his way to becoming an all-time MW Great, completely surpassing even Silva's record!
YET…. Entirely Unaware that he was actively participating in THE VERY catalyst & Prime motivation for the Re-Emergence & Re-Invigoration of his Biggest Nemesis to RE-Emerge from the Ashes like a Phoenix, TAKE his spot & Achieve ALL THE GREATEST GOALS he could have EVER dreamed about EVEN in his wildest of dreams, Yet Surpassing them & MORE! Then to be left as a mere afterthought & on the sidelines…kinda Frozen Like Elsa?!…
All because of 1 Arrogant & Ego-driven Rude & Disrespectful interview that EVEN Alex himself STILL to this day personally references, pinpoints & acknowledges as THAT Particularly Specific defining pivotal moment! And who says Karma doesn't exist, Huh? Chama… Eh?!

MMA fans doesn’t really give him credit over the mental edge he has over basically every single fighter. The Amazonian heritage, the mystique about him, his walk out and his music.
Jiri was talking about him using black magic, he lost right there and then. Even Aspinall was “intimidated” by him when they were on the same card, claiming that he thinks Alex is convinced he can beat him. Dude is an absolute savant like we have never seen before. The look on Jamahal Hills face before they touch gloves is hilarious, you could tell how intimidated he was. He fucked up with the trash talk. His mental edge is the sole reason I give him a chance vs Aspinall or Jones. People who compare Poatan and Gane truly does not know what Poatan is.

Pump the brakes everybody. Pereira has four wins at light heavyweight, two over the same guy who fights with his hands down by his side half the time and one is what should have been a draw with Yan. Before that he went one and one with Izzy which is great. But since he's been in the ufc he has been shown to be human and he has been finished. Let him fight Ankalaev and rematch Yan and then if he wins maybe talk about heavyweight.
