- Return to Castle Wolfenstein - a grand shooter and beloved classic. And surprisingly, its German port is almost as good as the original, perhaps even exceeding it. Let's see why!

I adore the idea of a hectic firefight being undertaken and somehow hearing: "hey! There better not be fighting going on!"
Im honestly somewhat suprised that any Wolfenstein game even made it to Germany
Well, what would it mean if germany banned the game about killing nazis, would that be, pro-nazi?
the game is murdering nazis after all, and yknow....
@@repetitivethinking Pretty much. Which is also why Doom is a super christian game. You go around destroying demons from hell.
The only thing what also many other game set during WW2 did was mostly removing the swaztikas and the gore. That was until the international version of Wolfenstein The New Order - Youngblood got released. Same thing with COD most notibly World at War. The gore and nazi theme got cut out and Zombies was entirely removed in the German version of the game
30:31 Not only that, but his first name initial is also B. which makes his name sound like "Bewacher" which also means Guard.
I didn't even notice that, great eye!
The Wolfs are like those groups who deny being Nazis but are obviously Nazis in ideals that we sadly have in the modern day.
That's precisely what I thought when he went through how deep the Wolf theming goes - it feels oddly realistic to the modern organisations who are too cowardly to say what they are, but name their entire organisation and hierarchy something really macho and supremacist anyway. "The Wolves," with their leaders being "Pack Leaders" serving the "Alpha?" I'd almost say it's ahead of its time, if it weren't unfortunately more accurate to say we are behind ours
Are we the baddies?
Ah yes. The American left.
@@implord4197 what the fuck are you smoking? it's clearly not the good shit
@@implord4197 if you're gonna try trolling, least you could do is try to sound plausible
I love it when GermanPeter gets excited when blood and gore appears in Wolfenstein
The "Glasses Guy" is Tony Jay (RIP). He also voiced the Elder God in the Legacy of Kain/Soul Reaver games.
This was awesome to listen to! I wonder if there's a mod for the Steam version to place in the german voicelines? It'd go a long way for immersion sake (and some of the German VA's are spot on and hilarious).
The fact that I've learned so much about Germany and it's quirks, both language and censorship-wise simply because of this series honestly makes me more interested in the culture of germany in general. Loving this series so far, can't wait to see a new entry for it when the time comes!
Fun fact, the swastika actually means "good luck" in sanskrit. Though I think the Nazis used a flipped/mirrored version of it.
its a generic shape that is created any time a shape is made both vertically and horizontally symmetrical. Its like that S shape that people keep making independent of seeing the Latin "s" letter. Native Americans have made them even though they had no contact with anyone who used them in the old world.
12:45 Peter Heusch, 13:10 Joachim Pütz, 13:40 Hans-Jörg Karrenbrock, 14:10 Renier Baaken
22:57 That's the late Tony Jay, frigging amazing voice actor. Hear him again in Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver (and other Legacy of Kain entries), Hunter: The Reckoning, and some of the Fallout games, I forget which ones
This is my favorite substitute for German lessons over the summer.
"And if you think that's controversial, then maybe you should follow your leader, and go to Hell too."
The rawest line I think I've ever heard Peter say, and I'm 1,000% behind it. It blows my mind that people in the modern age can still think that anything the Nazi regime did was any sort of okay, or that they should ever try to follow suit. Unfortunately I feel like ethnic groups have so aggressively split themselves into hard line divided sections of society that complete and seamless integration is almost impossible, but that doesn't mean that we need to try and figure out which group is 'superior' or have any groups try to eliminate any other groups. :/
Co-existence and co-habitation are entirely feasible, even while keeping our ethnic/cultural diversity.
...No??? Cultural and ethnic integration is only a problem when dumbass racists are involved. No one normal actually cares if someone is a different skin color or language from them and we shouldn't let racists dictate the terms in which we as people live
Honestly, I love this port. It really added that invaluable b-movie nature, making it a brilliant romp of schlock and awe
I see what you did there...
Don’t think I didn’t notice that
6:33 the Totenkopf isn't a nazi exusive symbol, it was used by the German hussars way back in WW1 and before
Dude, that's literally the SS skull though.
@@GermanPeter yeah, the ss and Prussian army totenkopf are different. Tho it's less recognizable and not really "exclusive" to nazis in concept unlike the swastika or the ss logo.
I still wonder how none of the Wolves in this version ever wonder if the skulls on their caps maybe, just maybe, make them the baddies.
homie really tried to school a German on what is and isn't a Nazi symbol 💀
@@gitts726 I am a German...
The fifth soldier (min14 :10) sounds like Ford Cruller in the German version of Psyconouts .I looked for answers online and it says that the voiceactor is David Kaye but there wasn't anything writen or mentioning Wolfenstein so I could be wrong .Soldier number two sounds sounds kinda like the G-men (German version) but I am not sure .The alchemist reminds me of the character Albert E ,he comes from a learning game I played as a Kid.
Wolfenstein 2009 is my fave besides the reboot ones. So yeah, I'd really like to see it.
Heyho, I got a few suggestions that you could cover, if you like. There's Command & Conquer: Generals (or Generäle here in Germany), which has some pretty ridiculous censorship. Another mention goes to Shadow Man, where the german censorship actually made the game harder.
Those fucking TNT barrels lmao
Oooh! I love censorship changes to gameplay in games. What changes in Shadow Man?
@@lainamitclaire Some enemies cannot be killed because the censorship messed up their death script/animations, making some levels harder to progress
@@simon-ricardokuhn1713 that's awesome, I'll check that out!
This was really good commentary and yes, please continue to call them pee babies because that is exactly what they were and still are.
That reference to They Might Be Giants warmed my heart. Glad SOMEONE else knows the truth lol
Peter's done it before, but still. Anyone who references Giants gets a kudos in my book
And I'm not even a big fan, I just think they're great and a lot of fun
I'm fairly certain that the first voice actor mentioned is also the announcer guy in the german version of stronghold (i.e. the one warning you about enemy attacks, lack of ressources etc.)
He is. He also voices Lester in the Gothic games.
I never know how to refer to the weird triangle symbol Bethesda uses, but I will now call it the Pee Baby Swaptika.
Never really noticed the Pee Baby symbols on the undead… yeeeaaaah the W works way better there, and maybe even adds in some implied lore that Staatmeister’s Pee Babies took their logo from those ancient bad guys. I like it!
I wonder if the triangle is meant to be a reference to Rise of the Triad, which was initially conceived as a sequel to Wolf 3D. I guess calling it the "triad" would work in that case, but I prefer your name for it :D
That would make sense too, although the RoTT triangle is the other way around. Still, I like that that would make Wolfenstein, Heretic, Doom, and Rise of the Triad all one continuity!
I just want to say, even though I can't afford Patreon right now, I really appreciate your tiers being moderately priced, without some absurd tier :)
Wonderful video as always German Peter, I really need to come back to this series more often. Ive actually never played any of the wolfenstein games and its actually really interesting to watch about. It’s also nice to learn a bit of german from this, will I remember these things? probably not. Will I be able to learn german from just these videos? not at all, but honestly I think it’s more funner to learn in a more casual way than just doing online duolingo classes. But I’m sure you get the idea!
With how polished your videos are, I'm surprised you don't have more subs. Great video!
It always helps if people recommend my videos to others. Thank you :)
The voice of the soldier at 14:14 to 14:26 kinda feels like Siegbert Schnösel from Spongebob squarepants. (Squidwards rival, i don't know what he is called in english)
But that could also just be my mind playing tricks.
Edit: Also want to mention, i really like that the german dub of the game makes the characters a bit more fun in my opinion.
Kinda reminds me of Hogans heroes where most of the germans got fun sounding dialects like Schultz going full bavarian and Klink often talking utter garbage with his saxon dialect. :D
I actually thought the same thing! But I think he just sounds really similar, not that he's the same VA. But I'm sure that whoever he is, he was on Bibi und Tina, TKKG or the ???.
@@GermanPeter I unfornatly never listened to any of these so i sadly can't tell but it still sounds so damn familiar.
huh. Didn't Know Squilliam Fancyson had a different name in other languages. Neat
@@galesonic Cartoon names, especially something as english sounding as this one, tends to be translated into meaningful stuff for the target language. In french for example he's named Guillaume Calamarchic, literally translated Guillaume Fancysquid
I've seen the visual censorship paraded around a ton, but this look at the changes to the writing and acting are a whole new perspective for me! Really changes the context. They didn't just replace some logos, they crafted a whole different vibe. It's not just censorship, it's localization!
surprised you had to call them pee-babies, i thought your viewers would be able to remain mature with the word mentioned
really enjoyed the part at the 6 minute mark, you leaving in a blooper of "swaptikaz" is really nice (:
the wolf concept in the game is really cool, if i ever play the us version of the game i hope it has the concept ( likely won't, but i can wish )
thanks for giving me and others something to watch either before bed or in the morning!
"Pee Babies" is now one of my favourite alternate names for the "Schmazis", as I've been personally calling them. Can't remember if I heard the latter somewhere on TikTok first, but it reminds me of the comedic song "Wernher von Braun" from musician Tom Lehrer.
hearing peter laugh like that made my day
Great video and showcase!!
Man, you should check out the localized puns in the German version of Hearthstone. One gem I found is a card called "Copycat", which is a cat that copies a card from the opponent. In German its "Duplikater". Genius.
Duplikater! That's almost as great as "Backel" from Pokemon, I love it!
you should do the quirks of german postal but idk if postal games are even in germany lol
There's... nothing to cover there. They're banned. Don't even have voice acting.
@@GermanPeteri mean... There is a Mod available, but its still in the Beta Version, so...

@@etasjo around 2013-2015 it was available in German Steam store and a German Guy voiced the Postal Dude and published as a Mod for Postal 2.
@@GermanPeter I don't know about the other games but I got Postal: Brain Damaged on the german steam store. But even then, there is nothing really to cover.
The only german thing I noticed in that game are the subtitles but that's about it.
Awesome video! I did want to add, since you pointed out you werent sure why they changed the Wilhelm Strasse name - up until 1945 the Wilhelmstrasse thoroughfare in Germany was the center of government, so it was used as the pee babies' home base so to speak. His name is a pun.
I’d think it be interesting to see fallout covered because I know some stuff was changed in Japan so it might be cool to see what is changed in Germany
Thank you for the little TMBG reference hehe
Also, fun fact! One of the few (like maybe out of 2 things [the other was invent jerrycans]) good things Nαzı Germany did for the wider world was invent Fanta.......not _at all_ worth the murder and genocide obviously.
Great Video Peter
Thank you so much!
While the soldiers in Castle Wolfenstein were definitely Germans, it's worth remembering that the German army conscripted soldiers from countries they conquered like Czechoslovakia.
And in rare and special cases, even Africans. Which I'm sure must've been quite a sight
no thinking allowed, ignore the fact their family would be killed if they tried anything, they're all evil and that's the end of it
like hell you wouldn't kill another family to save your own
there were two German versions
an FSK 18 where only Nazis were renamed Wölfe ect. and all the symbols were changed but otherwise it is like the ROW version and then there was an FSK16 version, albeit not long, where the violence was also censored
My 2nd favorite Wolfenstein game behind 2009
13:00 I am not sure but I think thats the same voice actor then Lester from german Gothic, which is Peter Heusch. I could be wrong though...
Would make sense, considering Strasse's (Strese's?) VA also worked on Gothic.
The second guard also worked on gothic, f.e. as Lefty. Joachim Pütz
I think I recognized multiple other VA from Gothic aswell. Maybe a similar Situation like with HL2 and they know each other from previous works?
This was a great video, I'd nearly love an English dub of the German dub, something just seems a tad more fun and Disneylike as you put it. 😁And about the 2009 Wolfenstein, you're not alone in liking it! I loved it so much that back in the day I made a campy feature length live action film based on RTCW and 2009 Wolfenstein. I'm looking forward to seeing your video on the 2009 game, as I love it because of its flaws and very Indiana Jones-esque story. I'm hoping there's a few treats in the German version. 😁
It's incredible how at the start the dictionary swap felt so weird, but by the end it was completely natural to me.
5:59 I love when people go off-script like that, it was hilarious seeing Peter lose his composure.
13:03 the guy is Peter Heusch he voiced Lester in the Gothic games and the advisor in Stronghold, if I am not wrong. Whether he was present elsewhere is uncertain. since almost only evidence of his TV and audio book appearances can be found online.
I never got very far myself in the English version of the game, but I do really appreciate the combination of deadpan and borderline comedic deliveries. Nothing has been worse for the peebabies' pride than being presented as dumb and cartoony, so you really do love to see it.
I had almost entirely forgotten that Wolfenstein 2009 was a thing, and I would honestly not be upset if it was skipped in favour of Machine Games' masterpieces. Though, from a lack of personal research, I have to wonder what they did for a German localisation, considering a very big slice of the voice cast is already natively German/Austrian. Did they cast the same people twice, but leave out the English? Who knows! Would be really cool to see you dive into!
I'm looking forward to 2009! It's my favourite Wolfenstein game even ahead of RTCW. Peak Raven - after that they only had Singularity (which is great as well but a bit too weird for my taste) and then they got sent to the CoD mines for all eternity.
It's my favorite too! I have no idea why people clowned on it. Out of all the Wolfenstein games I've played so far, this one was the most well-rounded! Not a single moment that frustrated me, unlike RTCW and even the newer games. Every single detail felt so deliberate and important, it's far better than RTCW ever was. Sorry, but it's true.
@@GermanPeter For me this was one of those games that are more fun in theory than in practise. It has cool levels, enemies and guns and the bosses were really good for me - they are the exact type of boss I really like, where they have some sort of mechanic that you have to learn. But after I finished it, my reactions were: meh. I mean it's alright, like, but other Wolfensteins are better in my opinion (especially Machine Games ones, The New Order is absolutely amazing - actually I would rank it in my top 5 favourite games!)
The deep voice they use for Glasses guy in the English port is the same as the opening Narrator for the English version of Treasure Planet
What I found very interesting is that they changed the name Helga von Bülow into Helga von Braun. Because "von Bülow" is a famous german noble family. Famous members from this family are for example the german comedian Vicco von Bülow (also known as Loriot) or Cosima von Bülow who was the wife of Richard Wagner. Last one maybe is the inspiration for Helga von Bülow because Hitler was a big fan of Richard Wagner.
Can't wait to see the The New Order and The Old Blood videos! I really find the censorship in those games to be interesting.
What I don't understand is how RTCW has such a perfect censored version yet it it still not available in Germany.
If I recall correctly, the initial german version was given a "16+" age rating, but was later banned because the violence remained unchanged, and thus continued the ban on games that "glorified killing".
Soldier #1 sounds like an innocent young chap who doesn't even know what the heck is going on beyond the scenes... poor lad. :(
There were many young men who got sent to their deaths and didn't know any better. Scary stuff.
A little fun fact there is a poster in the first mission on the tram ride level that has a ss soldier on skis and that poster is actully for the norwegian ss skibatalion during the nazi occupation in ww2.
Yup! But they removed the SS symbols from it. So it really just looks like a Pee Baby having fun on some skiers.

I really love how you add the emoticons to subtitles that are happy or exited lines.
As someone on the spectrum I find it really helpful
Oh, didn't know it was actually useful, I just thought it was cute :D Good to know, I'll keep doing it then!
14:12 Dunno if you'll see this comment but I'm pretty sure Soldier 5 is voiced by Stefan Staudinger who also voiced Jonathan in Die Mumie from 1999 with Brendan Fraser
I really like the wolfenstein font, and i want to know if i can get it for Word documents. It seems to hold this ominous feeling to it. What is the font called?
"Fraktur" or "Frakturschrift". If you mean the one I showed in the video, link's in the description.
When is "The quirks of GermanPeter" coming out?
Yes, Wolfenstein always had the more crazy things. The occult conspiracy stuff and Wunderwaffen, but dialed to the extreme. Don't let anybody tell you that those things don't belong in Wolfenstein. They have always been there from the beginning.
You mentioned that the German was a bit broken in the original English version. I'm curious what other phrases they're saying when they die if you could break them down. My favourite is also, "Mein Gott!" It's definitely a beautiful homage to the previous game while making it slightly less cartoonish.
I actually don't remember many lines (it's been over a decade since I've played the original), but I do remember them going "SCHNELL! SCHNELL!" and the aforementioned "Mein GOTT!"-one. I think one of them also shouts something about BJ being a spy or a traitor, but I might be wrong.
Also, in Wolfenstein 2009, some of the SS also shout "Mein Leben" when dying, but I believe in the German version (which actually takes itself MORE seriously this time), they shout "ICH STERBE!" (I'm dying!). At least that's what I kept hearing all the time. It's so over-the-top that I actually kind of prefer it :D
@@GermanPeter Thank you so much! I look forward to the next installment when you cover it. ☺️
Thank you too for being a fan!
Ah yes, the good ol' Rainer Brandt school of hamming up dialogue to eleven in the German translation - worked good for a lot of spaghetti westerns, worked great for The Persuaders! / Die Zwei, and also seems to work here... :D
Oh man, die Zwei! I LOVE that series, I was so happy that my dad introduced me to it. Legitimately made the whole series 200% better with all the random ad-libbing!
The voice at 13:12 is one of the voices used for many characters in the games Gothic and Gothic 2. Maybe you know it from there?
I've never played Gothic before, so no :D But I guess I have to now!
2:51 Better to be safe than sorry I guess, lmao
loved Wolfenstein 2009, I liked the hub and spoke layouts the veil powers. A fun game even if the finale was a bit of a mare.
14:12 the pee baby here sounds like John trelawny from a German audio book of treasure island. But I don't know which version it is exactly.
i also liked 2009 Wolfenstein, i had it for the 360 and now that it is delisted, no way to replay that game without inviting some trojans to my computer or try to find it again for a console, kind of why i don´t trade or resell my games anymore
Microsoft is buying Activision and they own Bethesda so maybe the game will come back
I would absolutely want a video on 2009 wolfenstein. I would also like to know where I could even play it!
You have to find a physical copy online I'm afraid. It's not available anywhere else unfortunately.
And believe me, finding a German copy was downright impossible, and even then I paid like 60 bucks.
Darn
It looks like your texture resolution is set to low. Considering the game's release in 2001, I'm sure you could max it out on your hardware.
Yeah, I... I noticed that AFTER finishing the game. Just in time for the texture comparisons at least.
However, the game actually did chug quite badly when I enabled high-res textures for some reason, which was just awful. I had like 25-30 frames max when I did it. For a game from 2001, that's embarassing. It worked for the still comparisons, not for actual gameplay.
@@GermanPeter That's surprising. I'm pretty sure I was running it maxed out even when it was new. You mentioned using an unpatched version. Could that be it?
Probably just some weird quirk in the engine. Some odd setting that just doesn't do well on your system.
Soldier number 3 sounds like the narrator from Ratchet and Clank 2 (the intro) and some other voices in the Ratchet and Clank universe - the german versions of course.
The video is absolut erstaunlich but the thumbnail is equally so.
I don't know if this is a actuall thing but i would love a mod that adds the german dub to the rrtcw source port, since the pee babys speaking actual german would be quite nice for imersion
I guess you could literally just replace the English sound files with the German ones, that shouldn't be too difficult.
15:42 Actually that does sound like a good Kill Sound to use in games like Team Fortress 2

Ich weiss noch da war ich bei nem fruend von mir und er hatte einfach auch eine "schwapschstika" an seiner wand hängen. Tja dass war das letzte mal dass ich ihn gesehen hatte.
Your videos make me just the tiniest bit sad that Iceland doesn't really dub games like that. I probably wouldn't play a whole game with an Icelandic dub, but it would definitely be fun to switch to from time to time. 😅
That kinda makes me wonder if the Medal of Honor games were released in Germany.

yes please do wolfenstein 2009, it's a wonderful game
the swabstica should be added to the dictionary as "an emblem that replaces the bad simbol of a authoratarian regime"
This game was a fantastic remake. Outside of the brutal stealth level, it's non-stop fun.
You mean the stealth level I legitimately had to cheat my way through because I had no idea if I was failing it because of a bug or because I sucked?
Yeah
@@GermanPeter That's the one! A blemish on an otherwise amazing game.
Something about a Hitler without his beard is so funny to me-

7:53 That Change is also in the Original Xbox Version on the game (I've never played the PS2 version so I can't comment on that). Also the Xbox version has the exclusive addition of 2 player Split-screen co-op, easily making it one of the top 10 2 player co-op FPS games on the system.
13:20 I see they changed it to "I have to polish the car" from "I have to go polish my weapon" which could be interpreted as a masturbation joke.
Oh no! That "polish my gun"-joke is way funnier, that'd have fit these characters perfectly!
Honestly, my biggest beef with Hitler is the destruction of a perfectly good Charlie Chaplin pencil mustache

11:57 I thought it was "En garde, die amerikaner!"
Yeah, a funny thought, but that was the best I could do as a typical non-English native Asian guy.
15:30 This has to be the German voice actor for Colonel Hogan from Hogans Heroes ( Ein Käfig voller Helden vor my German speaking friends ) but yes tell me if im Wrong
I would like to see a video on Day of Defeat.
Have to disappoint you, I'm not all that into Valve games anymore at the moment, and I don't think there's much interest for a video on those games either. Maybe as a quickie in the future, but no promises.
Is that sergeant schultz from hogans heroes in the thumbnail?
Yes!
Honestly what's weird is, from an american perspective, the changed version seems a lot less ridiculous. It probably doesn't exactly communicate that well but the Germans in ROTK are absolutely nutty ridiculous stereotypes, they sound like cartoon villains of the era people playing it when it came out grew up with. As most of our cartoon villains were kind of played up as 'serious' (it was a trend in all American cartoons except really He Man as it was uhh, campy and gay. Intentionally so.) Especially 90s series' really liked their downright creepy sounding childrens villains. I.E. The doctor was the classic 'serious evil German doctor' stereotype. The deadpan clinical method is why he'd be associated with PURE EVIL in America. If you wanted to have an evil German character, make them sound cold and clinical. This is actually kinda common. I.E. Most disney villains in English are straight up made as creepy as possible. In fact most characters are played very straight. Goofy chars rarely show up outside of adult comedies. For some...bizarre reason.
So what about the multiplayer side of RTCW, Peter? Obviously they knew what wouldn't work there, so for instance the swastika seen in singleplayer chateau was re-textured to feature the game's logo.
Eh, it's more of the same censorship so I don't think it's worth it.
@@GermanPeter It's very much like that. A not-identical Wolfenstein logo for the Axis team, and two propaganda posters (for Netherlandic and Norwegian respectively) are identical between both German and Multiplayer.
is there a quirk to the just cause series in germany?
Dunno, never touched them
