Good decision to purchase the printer Den, I think you have made a great repair, paint the section black and when you have landed the first decent fish you can just concentrate on winning that match, good luck, I will be holding my breath.... thanks for the video.
Thanks Mike. I'll order a replacement section regardless, because this will unbalance the pole a bit. If it gets me through next weeks tournament, I'll be happy. If I win, it will pay for the new section.😁👍
I have whipped all my rings on with 30lb braid, and then epoxy.Had to slowly spin the rod sections so the epoxy would set evenly and not drip.Good luck at the match.
Looks good work to me Den. If you are worried perhaps go a grade softer in your elastic then ship back to the top kit quicker and use the puller more. Look forward to the follow up.
Great job Den in difficult circumstances and I'm sure it'll hold up great .( Mr hemphead as was, changed because people thought I was a dopehead , only anglers know different ) All the best for the 3 dayer mate .
You have done a good job in my opinion. I reckon your repair will hold up fine? I will bring the two spare No. 6 sections with me and if you need them, and hopefully they fit, you can use them, but I don’t think you will need them. Great piece of work!
Be nice to see you round off this story with a good result in the Match Tournament Den! I have just started getting into pole fishing and back into match fishing in my retired years so just a cheap £20 pole to start with! Hard to believe they don't sell poles in Australia, a marketing oppertunity for the pole manufacturers surely?
Been there done that ..albeit on my landing net poles, which probably dont take anything like the pressure BUT the repairs have held for a surprisingly long time such that the new landing net poles remain in the reserve kit awaiting the next bust pole! Oh and my repairing skills aren't a patch on yours...I used superglue and old pole sections....
Just found your page Denis looks like you have settled in well in Australia. We're still fishing at Richards.Dont know if you heard Roland Sturdy passed away at Christmas.
Hi Paul. it's great to hear from you mate. Yes, I love it down here, but I do miss the matches at Richards place. I only get to fish one match per month these days if I'm lucky. You also have to get your head around the distances involved. On some matches it is a 1500 mile round trip which basically makes it an overnight stay in a motel on the first night and then a couple of hours travel the next day to get to the venue. I was really sorry to hear that Roly had passed away. I hope everyone else is doing well. Please let them know about my UA-cam Channel. Johnny Kidd might learn something.🤣🤣🤣 By the way, can you show them this one: ua-cam.com/video/WG8E79aIPlc/v-deo.html It got over a million views but it should give them a good laugh at my expense.
Sorry may be too late, with regards to your glass cloth not sticking, silly questions I know, but did you abrade and de-grease the bonding surface? . As regards the un-wrapping remember 'cling film' from your days over here, use epoxy to whet the cloth then tightly wrap the film around the repair. When the resin and cloth have reached the 'green' stage remove the wrap trim the open end flush to the hole. the repeat the process 3 times overlapping each layer by 1 inch. This will overcome the problem you will encounter with your 'bush style' repair' that is the shear point that you have created with the inboard end of the sleeve. May help to print a internal sleeve (well coated with a good release agent, always had success using a few light coats of WD40). Test it first then you may be confident enough to use the next pole section as your internal form. Hope this helps and good luck with your match series. Hopefully to be released to this channel. Oh, a plastic bag and rubber bands would be a good alternative to the film.
Thanks for the info Mike, but the repair is done now, so I'm going to have to go with what I have. I'll know later today if it works because I'm off out in a minute to have a fish at Den's pond.
Sounds like a plan to me. Hope it all goes to plan? I would of probably have done the same if I had a pole. 3d printing just keeps you wondering what else can I make to sort a problem.
I would have maybe gone longer on that bush den and then maybe put a wrap of fibre glass extending past it. But it looks good, fingers crossed it doesn't blow up on that first fish!
Nice idea Den, hope it works ok for you. Are you going to do a video of the test? best of luck with that and the up and coming match. Best regards..Terry..
Thanks Terry. Yes, I'm going to Den's Pond tomorrow to try it out. If it breaks and I have to go in after it, at least it's not that deep there. It will be next weeks video.👍👍
Why don't you try and get some woven carbon cloth from a jacht boulder ,or a mast builder they are normally made of carbon and perhaps they can help you otherwise use a long stick😁😁
Always a horrible feeling when you break a pole section, but you’ve worked out a quick fix solution that hopefully will stand up to the test. Just wondering what two part epoxy you were using? I use a brand from the United States called JB Weld that is incredibly strong and cures nicely in 24 hours and gives a great finish that can be sanded down. Hope everything works out well until you can get your hands on a nice new shiny pole section. Tight lines! 👍🏼
I did look at their Website, but they didn't have what I wanted I'm afraid. They did have a Superium X20 but I can't find any info on the maximum elastic rating for it.
Hi Den, I will be in Australia in February and could bring you a pole repair kit (minus the epoxy which may be an issue at the airport) if this is of any help.
That's very kind of you Eddie, but I'm going to order a replacement section. Somehow I would never be confident of repaired poles for long term use. If you're going to be anywhere near Newcastle NSW, look me up. We can have a day out fishing.😁👍
@@FishingwithDen repairs are ok, I have done a few on my old Maver Strong Arm Pole which has been obsolete for years. If you change your mind let me know I am happy to get it for you. Thanks for the offer to meet up I will certainly consider it if I can make it work.
I thought so too, but luckily Billy Clarke fishing Tackle has one in stock. I find that shop has lots of spare parts, so if your ever in need, try there.

yes interesting love the printed part idea iv used super glue baking powder and black tape and repaired a totally crushed section rock solid repair
I've heard about super glue and baking powder being used for all sorts of repairs, but never for a pole. Good idea mate.
Great job Den. I think you’ll be ok.
I sat next to Maurice last year and watched him break his pole!!!
See you next week. Cheers Don.
No worries mate. See you on Thursday night.
I think it will hold Den ! well done .👌👍🖐🐟
Thanks Danny
I fear you have created what they call a stress riser with that coupling, but maybe not. Best of luck in the match!!

Thanks Stan.
Thought the whipping was a nice touch. Even if it puts the balance out a little bit, I'm sure you'll manage. Good desperation repair! 👍👍
Thanks John The whipping was necessary for strength. It's amazing how much pressure a rod will take if the end of the sections are whipped.
Looks good work to me Den. If you are worried perhaps go a grade softer in your elastic then ship back to the top kit quicker and use the puller more. Look forward to the follow up.
