  • A Charlotte man thought he scored a great deal on a used minivan, but he was actually scammed by a person who rolled back the odometer making the vehicle appear less used than it really was.
Used car scams aren't a new trick, but experts say odometer rollbacks are on the rise in North Carolina. According to Carfax, this particular type of scam involves sellers tampering with odometer readings to make older cars appear to have fewer miles.
An Tran said the 2015 Honda Odyssey sitting in his driveway looked like a great deal when he found it on Facebook Marketplace in February. He negotiated with the seller and ended up paying $10,600. That price would've been really good if the minivan had the 140,000 miles shown on the odometer. A Carfax report found it actually has around 200,000 miles.
With three young children and his father-in-law living with his family in Mint Hill, Tran was looking for something that could reliably haul the whole family. Affordability was a key factor for him.

If the owner of a “low mileage” vehicle doesn’t provide the vin, that usually means they’re hiding odometer fraud and I know this because whenever I saw a 2008 Suburban Z71 that the owner claimed had 85,000 miles, I checked his reviews and I found out that he didn’t provide the vin of the truck and it made it so suspicious that he was hiding odometer fraud because finding a Suburban this old with really low miles is hard to find because most of the time, they have high miles

Always run the VIN number before you even go to see the car. If they refuse to give you the VIN its a BIG RED FLAG. again check car fax BEFORE you view car

going digital was supposed to stop it, but only made it easier. I was thinking of trading my car recently. The dealer asked how many miles do I really have on it. I said considering I bought the car new, and have every receipt for service, does he want to rethink his question. I walked out. In the last decade I drove it less than 5 K a year

how often do you change the tires on a car like that? would imagine they dry rot before the tread goes to the minimum.

A guy scammed me, he rolled back the mileage over 200,000 before he sold it to me. I have all of the guys information including his address but the police said there's nothing they can do. These guys get away with this scam because there's no consequences

You are the victim or fraud -get a lawyer and you should be able to get your money back, get the fraudster jailed, or both.

I do have sympathy, these people should be in jail. A lot of people have no idea that you can roll miles back in a vehicle.
