AFM and Stop-Start were (are) Solutions In Search of a Problem.
My '08 Silverado went to zero oil consumption after I disabled AFM via the plug-in (later PCM reprogramming). You're right; fuel consumption didn't change, but driveability was vastly improved. (Mostly "hunting" or switching back and forth between 4 & 8 cylinder mode while driving uphill part-throttle.)
And the guy that came up with Stop-Start obviously never drove through the bad part of town after dark.
Congrats on the 100K subscribers. You keep makin' 'em, we'll keep whatchin' "em.
" obviously never drove through the bad part of town after dark."
And didn't live anywhere that your vehicle cabin goes up ten degrees within two minutes of the AC cutting off.
Had a afm disabled in 5.3 for the lat 70000 miles and I'm glad I did
Wrenching with Kenny. One other thing about the engine shutting off when you are at the stoplight in Nevada or Arizona during the summer months when it's 100 degrees or more the A/C shuts off.
I've been saying this to people for as long as this technology has been around. I have been told I'm too old school to understand the advantage. I tell them, I may not understand the technology, but I still have common sense enough to know what happens to the engine every time it shuts down & has to start up. That's the most difficult time for an engine, no matter what technological advancements have been made.
What is the advantage they are claiming? I'd like to hear the mental gymnastics there.
As soon as the warranty is up the starter goes out !…..
@@joefratianni8693 the auto stop saves two gallons of gasoline per year, and you change the $800 starter seven years sooner! So you save $56. in fuel but spend $744. for the trouble.
Proponents claim reduced plant food (CO2) in the atmosphere. They tried to say better fuel economy, but that’s just too easy to disprove. So now, it the nebulous global warming bogeyman.
I completely disabled the ESS on my 2021 Jeep Wrangler, and my wife’s Mazda CX-5 turbo was unencumbered by any of this crapola.
@ Not counting the fuel and emissions to mine, build, ship, and install the starter...
I installed a bypass on my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek just after I bought it, Good Used condition w/ 12250 on the clock. No issues, oil consumption is the same, no issues of any kind!
Think of it this way , a lot of people in big cities start the car in the morning and drive to work then start it again to go home . With the auto start stop and in rush hour traffic it may start stop 50 times or more ( depending on how far ) you are from work or more each way ! Wow long will the starter last ?……. Thanks Kenny for bringing this up !……
Wait till they have to buy those starters ! LOL
I have a friend who has a 2019 VW Tiguan with start stop and with less than 60 thousand miles he just had the starter replaced and just got it done with three months left on his warrantee. I hate stop start too. Good video. Happy Motoring.
I bought one years ago for my Avalanche. Runs so much smoother now.
That's great to hear! Keep wrenching! 🔧 Kenny
If you are using an AFM disable block, if you need to do a smog check for registration renewal and they read your OBD readiness then make sure to remove the block a week or two before you do the smog check. Using the AFM block will clear all your smog readiness codes and you'll need to do a couple drive cycles to pass the smog check. That happened to me with my 2012 Chev Tahoe
That happen to me too had to get it retested a week later and it pasted
That's what I had a question about so thanks for your input!
I bought a 2015 Silverado new with the AFM cylinder shut off.
There’s a way to stop it from operating and it doesn’t cost $300-$400..my buddy was a mechanic at a different Chevy dealership and told me to put it in 5th with the manual button on the shift selector and it works perfectly..it never cuts off four cylinders while in operation..only down side is you have to do this every time you put it in gear..I’ve been doing it for 10 years and it’s basically something I do automatically now.
I have a AFM disabler on my wife’s PPV Tahoe, best investment ever. Will be purchasing one for my 2015 Silverado as well.
I have a 2020 1500 Denali with the 6.2. I drive a LOT. (about 45000 miles per year). I installed the range pulsar LT to disable DFM and Stop/Start . It also allows you to change the gas pedal response to a more aggressive response. I have mine set to 4 out of 5 because it helps in passing someone. Before installing it, I averaged about 19mpg. After installing it, I've averaged about 17.5mpg, but I no longer worry about lifter failure or the start/stop bs.
The biggest pet peeve that I have had in all of my years in the car business, I used to do parts and service I am now retired, is these cockamamie devices that are nothing but feel good devices to make the government feel good about saving the planet from a non-existent climate crisis.
They don't really work. If you think you're cutting fuel consumption and emissions by cutting out cylinders, no you're not, because the cylinders that are still working are going to have to work that much harder to make up for the other four cylinders that aren't working. The amount of fuel they save is insignificant.
As far as auto start goes, the government can shove those damn things where the sun don't shine. There should be a way to permanently disable them including General Motors. They don't save a fuel either and even if they do they produce more wear and tear on the vehicle which means your maintenance and repair costs go up, totally negating the fuel savings.
I would love to have a new Malibu. I like the styling and it's about the size of car that I want. My current car is a 99 Oldsmobile Alero, the Malibu is just a little bigger. Unfortunately I am not interested in a tiny little 1.5 L turbo motor that I guarantee you won't last very long and turning its engine off when I come to a stop light or a stop sign.
Hopefully with this new administration this BS from the last few years will be finally gone. There's a person running the EPA right now that knows his ass from a hole in the ground. Something that couldn't be said for the last administrator.
So “the government” laid down the challenge and GM couldn’t meet it. The government designs and builds shitty engines? There’s a novel, high-school-dropout theory.
Good video Kenny, watch out for the blood thinners. I've been on them for years and have bad pain in my spine and back. Just recently they have pointed this to Eliquis and Xarelto. I had P.E. and was supposed to be on them for life. Good luck!
I wonder if the medication is why my back has been bothering me so badly lately. Thanks for sharing your experience. Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
Up to 2017 the AFM only worked on 4 cylinders, but in GM's infinite wisdom in 2018 they decided to expand the system to work on all 8 cylinders. They had such success with it damaging the 4 cylinders it was on that they decided it would be even better on all 8 cylinders with 17 different firing orders. The real blame has to go to ever increasing CAFE fuel mileage standards. There is only so much mileage that is going to be coaxed out of an internal combustion engine and it still operate reliably. As to your statement about not really seeing any appreciable mileage increase I can personally attest to it. I just repaired my son in laws 2019 Chevy 1500 that ate a lifter and cam at 65,000 miles. Deleted the AFM, installed a performance tune in it and disabled the start stop crap and he has documented that it only cost at most 1/2 mpg. But, he raves about how much better the truck runs, how smooth it is and how happy he is that the start/stop bs doesnt work anymore.
An eazy way to reduce fuel consumption is to make cars and ther engines smaler. Disableing cilinders and start stop sistems can only get you so far if you are puling 3 tons of unnesecery weight.
@@theclockmaker633 yes but epa has done exact opposite to make companies like ford or chevy Happy since they sell more trucks. they have truck or large vehicle have to meet lower standards and if they add these stupid systems, they have to meet even lower standards, so fuel economy gets worse because they all keep building bigger vehicles to not have to meet as high a standard
@ranger178 you are right and unless that loophole changes trucks will keep getting biger and worse.
That is what they call "DFM" ?
Auto start/stop eliminator, available for just about any vehicle out there. Plug and play. Works great.
Yep. Got one. But for Chrysler products there is also a tiny Auxiliary Battery in the ESS system that is supposed to power the car during ESS events, so you don’t kill your starter battery. That little battery has a 2-3 year lifespan. No big deal. Except the Aux battery is in direct parallel with the main battery whenever you are driving so the alternator can charge them both up. When aux battery dies in 2-3 years, it takes out your big battery, so now you need to buy both batteries. You need to disconnect the Aux battery, and permanently disable ESS to have a reliable vehicle.
@@1wheeldrive751 Good info, thx
I bought a 2009 repairable with navigation. I found the previous owners address in the nav system when I hit the "Take me home" button. Just for shites & giggles I googled the address. With about 3 clicks I found a Google earth view (nice pool in the back yard), how much they paid for the house, and then a Google street view which had a photo of our van parked by their garage (same dent in the back door). God knows what I could have found out by trying. Scary stuff. Don't put your home address in the navigation system. Put the local police dept. address instead. That way if someone steals your car, they won't as easily find your house to steal the extra set of keys.
I agree with you, I would disable the stop start and the cylinder deactivation. Just more things to go wrong. Have a great day Kenny. Keep wrenching!😊
It's logical..more things to go wrong will do just that. There's already enough to worry about when it comes to vehicle expenses.
I have a 23' silverado and bought the Range DFM disabler. With the "Refresh" on 2022.5+, it connects to the ECM directly in the wheel well. It's still easy to install. A happy side effect is it disabled the auto start/stop.
Win, win!
Hi Kenny.
You've spoken from my soul. This 'modern' engine shutdown only makes the manufacturers' tills ring. Turbos are no longer lubricated so turbo/engine damage is inevitable. Why do they do that? Allegedly it reduces consumption, but I don't think so. So switch it off so that your engine lasts longer! Legal or illegal, it costs you all money.
Keep wrenching!!! Greatings. Mike.
I use the AFM Disabler from Range Technology in my 2016 Cadillac ATS 3.6 non turbe engine car. It also disable the Stop / Start nonsense ... Well worth the cost.
Thanks for the recommendation! Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
Jeep products have the start/stop that can be disabled. Fine, but it has a two battery system that can leave you stranded and expensive to maintain.
They do & they are expensive. Keep wrenching! Kenny
Man, I didn't know they were still doing this. I thought the V8-6-4 was such a flop that they wouldn't try doing it again.
Sensible comment.
The Chrysler Hemi motors do it also ! in trucks
My 2017 silverado bent a pushrod when one of the lifters failed to collapse inside of itself. Replaced GMs junk with a texas speed DOD delete kit, havent missed that system one time.
Absolutely you don't miss the B.S., I know I wouldn't! This advanced tech really is not.
I had a 2020 F150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost that had to stop/start. Every time I went to start the pickup. I felt like I was in an aircraft pushing buttons. I would always shut it off. I traded the pickup in last October. The pickup was also 100% fully loaded from the factory. I bought a 2024 F250 transit cargo van. With only the 3.5l. Being a cargo van. Meaning. It can be put to work like a semi truck. There is no stop/start. No turbos to worry about. I don't have the info center either. All of the expensive parts that were on the F150 i don't have. Except the E85 system. I don't use E85. But. It means I can use any type of gas and mix it. I don't miss playing pilot. But. I can say. That pickup for what's it is worth. Was amazing. Worth every penny for the 4 years I had it. Even to push that button after starting it. I needed the van worse. Van made more sense for myself.
Sounds like you made the right decision for your needs. Keep wrenching! 🔧 Kenny
I absolutely DETEST the AFM system. Had to rebuild 4 motors of the family’s because of lifter failure. I SHALL never own another motor that has the AFM system.
I just had to replace the lifters in my 2015 Chevy Suburban at 123,000 miles. I disabled the AFM at 80,000 miles but it still failed. Probably because the damage was already done. After installing the AFM programmer the gas mileage was better. The truck also ran smoother. I won’t buy another Chevy vehicle until they stop the AFM. !!!
That is because the lifter and cams will still fail because they are still working either way.
I put an AFM disabler on my 16 Silverado last April. I didn't notice any changes with fuel mileage. I'd say it helps with oil consumption. Just last week, injector #4 said it was done working. Flashing check engine light and poor performance. It also turned on the Stabilitrak. P0204 injector circuit open cylinder 4. Swapped the coil packs, spark plugs, and wires and the problem is still cylinder #4. Plug is dry, so it's definitely not spraying fuel. I also replaced the weak battery and cleaned the grounds. This weekend, I get to tackle a direct injector, oh goodie. Only 1 more payment and this truck is paid off. 136,xxx miles and the only major problem before has been a fuel pump. Rust issues caused the hardline to spring a leak. Fluid film is your friend in the NorthEast.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the AFM disabler! Keep wrenching! 🔧 Kenny
Yes, rust is the biggest problem I have with both my vehicles. I wish I had known about Fluid Film a few years earlier.
My mother owns a Subaru Outback that has the Auto Stop on it and yes you can disable it as soon as you get in the vehicle and get it started and I do believe you can have it turned off at the dealership if you would like and I personally hate the AS as I believe it's harder on the starter flywheel and other components ! But she likes it so we leave it on except when we are taking her somewhere we turn it off as soon as we get in to drive !
Engineering Explained did a study of the stop-start feature. While probably not perfectly scientific or completely accurate, the guy who does that channel is brilliant. His conclusion: the engine must be stopped for at least 7 seconds before restarting in order to save fuel. This included an analysis of the amount of fuel used during engine idle, which is an incredibly small amount. I say shut off the engine only when on a familiar route and you are confident you will be stopped for at least a couple minutes.
Daves autos did a video about a year ago showing a powerstroke and how long it took to refill the oil gallery, after about 30seconds the galleries drained back and then took over five seconds to refill by which time your accelerating down the road.
Probably in Europe with typically shorter distances it might reduce life emissions, but longer journeys, higher mileages and bigger capacity engines, I’d guess the lifetime reduction due to wear outweighs the small emission reduction
I disabled the Auto Stop on my wife's 2016 Malibu. Also, screw the laws prohibiting AFM blockers. I would use it anyway.
The only drawback I've heard is that on the units that plug into the data port, the unit draws a slight amount of power from the battery.
So with a vehicle that doesn't get a lot of driving, the possibility exists where one might come to a dead battery.
And the stop start system, I always shut it off upon start up. Anything that would program it out completely, might void my warranty. Now when said warranty expired, I might reconsider it.
My wifes Ford Edge has the start/stop feature. I bought a bypass module. 5 minute plug and play.
2024 Nissan versa no start stop on that car ,,my wifes
We have a 2025 CR-V with the Auto Start/stop feature and hate it. Amazon has a lot of start/stop eliminators listed. After consulting my dealer about the possibility of a warranty issue with it installed they told me not to worry, it would not affect the warranty. Cool dealer, huh? So I ordered one and installed it. It works flawlessly. It was very easy to install. Just pop up the shifter bezel (they supply the tool), unplug the start/stop switch, plug the vehicle harness into the eliminator, plug the other end of the eliminator back into the switch and pop the bezel back onto the console. These start/stop systems have got to wear out the starter a lot sooner and I can guarantee it will cost more to replace the starter than the money you saved in gas along the way.
Thanks for the info! It's great to hear the stop/start eliminator is working out well for you. Keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
Undoubtedly true!
I disabled my AFM and I"m actually getting slightly better MPG now.
First hand experience: 2012 Silverado 5.3 started eating oil around 75k. Nearly a quart every 1k. Vehicle was bought new and had always been to the dealer for oil changes. It's a longer story but dealer said the oil consumption was within spec. Due to eating oil it was fouling plugs between 30-50k. I used a Hypertech tuner to disable the dod. Now the truck is at 225k and only goes through the oil that it leaks. Tell me that dod is a good thing
I have a 2013 Sierra with about 90K miles. 5.3, 6 speed trans. I usually drive it in M mode and click it up to 5. This keeps the AFM from kicking in.
I get an average of 16.5 MPG. It uses a quart of oil every 4K miles. I notice it when I change my oil. I use Mobil 1, which has the GM Dexos 2 rating.
In contrast, my 26 year old Suburban with a 5.7 Vortec, has 181K and uses no oil.
I wish they would bring back the old days. This new "technology " sucks !
Amen brother
I DO THE EXACT SAME THING ON MY 2011 YUKON XL 5.3, TRUCK RUNS AND PULLS Like A BULL.
If you disable the start/stop, wonder if the specialized start/stop battery can be replaced with a cheaper old school battery once it needs replacing?
That is a great question! I don't know. Hopefully you can because those stop-start batteries are really expensive. Thanks for watching and keep wrenching 🔧 Kenny
In my 2017 Ford Escape, I used a start/stop eliminator that I ordered online, installed it, then I was able to replace the AGM battery with a standard lead acid. The car has been running like this since I bought it in 2019... So no issues so far.
@@Brother_Pugz Good to know. So it's been running on the same lead acid battery for several years? Did you use a scan tool to register the new battery (basically let the computer know the battery was replaced) or did you just swap it out? Thanks
I disable the auto start/stop function with simple switch wiring. AFM I deactivate with HP Tuners software, but it can be done with an Edge tuner or similar products.
I have seen plenty of AFM or cylinder delete issues in all brands, but haven't seen any problems caused by the stop start systems yet.
On my Toyota truck I use the stop start by pressing a little harder on the brake pedal when I want to engage it. Some days I'll save 5 minutes of idling. But if climate control sees too much temp drop in the evap it starts up the engine and says cancelled for climate control. I've tried not using it some days at all and got 2 mpg less, from 17-18 down to 15-16 in town.
Our two 900’s (Burb & Avalanche) both have it tuned it out. They are tuned for performance.
CDJR’s version of AFM is MDS. Actually I have to say if you are taking a long trip on the freeway with my Dodge Challenger 5.7L Hemi and driving the speed limit, MDS really does save fuel.
I hear Toyota has a counter on it after so many starts it throws a code and you have to change the starter and two relays and the dealer has to do they're the only one that can reset the counter in the pcm
2013 with OBD disabled in my case eliminated a code for air/fuel ratio imbalance. After 2 yrs I think it was a great product.
I had an 07 Grand Prix GXP with a 5.3 LS4 and I bought a RangeTek AFM disabler after I had to repair lifters twice. Until I got rid of the car, didn't have any further issues.
We religiously override the stoplight shutdown feature on our Jeep Compass. The stutter and delay at the stoplight when its active is very disturbing.
I find it hard to believe there are laws because on RAM trucks you can simply hit the gear limit button and put it in 8 and it runs on all 8 all the time, same with tow/haul mode but that will run 7th a lot instead of 8th, either way it keeps it from running on 4 cylinders
Thanks for sharing that tip about the RAM trucks, I did not know that. Keep wrenching! 🔧 Kenny
Yeah, it's ludicrous.
Am from NJ today I was in MVC for the inspection test , I was approve with my
YUKON XL 2007 5.8L with AFM
BUT 3 months ago I disable the AFM in AMCOO mechanic shop for $300 (software disable)
NJ is emission state , it’s not illegal disable the AFM , MVC check only the smoke emissions (catalytic)
For the "Stop/Start" I believe it can depend on the transmission that's fitted. I've driven both a manual and an automatic with it and I definitely prefer the manual setup as you have more control over it. I found the auto transmission system is a total Pain in the Tailbone to use and this was in a Mercedes. You slow for a junction, you stop and check it's clear. You shift your foot back to the gas and the engine dies. No revs, no power and the gap in the traffic you wanted rolls right past you as the engine restarts.
It can also be heavy on the battery as well.
In Europe they have been turning off their engines for 30 years at lights. I think cars go just as long as they do in the US.
"Ghost in the Machine" I like it.
2018 f150. Under steering wheel, about knee high. White wire, unplug it. Must hook back up to pull a trailer. For start stop.
Last year I bought a 2022 Passport with 20K miles that had that annoying feature. After reading about the wear and tear on the starter, I purchased the "Autostop Eliminator" installed in the center console in about 15 minutes. Problem solved!
I had a Range ( brand ) disabler on my 2018 cadillac Escalade. It worked like a charm. I did not notice any changes in gas consumption and if you buy a truck like that cause you are worried about gas, you bought the wrong truck. I did remove it every time I went to the dealer. I did find out that they don't all work the same so if you have AFM like I did it would require a certain type of disabler vs if you had DOD. The shut off feature is annoying as hell. i would avoid it at all costs if possible. I got rid of the escalade because it had vibrations that the dealer said they couldn't find and eventually I was so frustrated i simply opted for selling the truck. My current car does not have that.
HP Tuners let you remove the programming from the ECU. It opens the door for ECU and Trans/torque converter tuning. You can make your torque converter lock up and even just reduce the GM programmed slippage. You can adjust your shift points and your engines timing on up and down shifts. I tuned my downshifts so now my truck costs forever. I get far better gas mileage on full time V8 with tuned torque converter and transmission. It's worth the money if you want to keep the vehicle for a long time. My truck's 14yrs old and I intend to keep it for another 14! 😂😂😂😂😂
I'd use this if I had a vehicle with AFM, but I have a long history of removing the CA required hang on devices that you had to put on 66-70 cars, including a hang on EGR on my 68 VW.
Stop - start must absolute hell for a turbocharged engine.
If I buy a car with auto stop start, I will install the device that makes it default to off. I rarely drive in conditions where shutting down and restarting is beneficial. I will use it when it suits me.
My 2016 ram 5.7 with the cylinder shut off stuff works great i get regularly 18 -22 mpg on the freeway at 72 mph
On my Chrysler Pacifica, the result of the auto start stop was a kill of the unaccessible second battery and starter, a towing bill, and three days without my van when it was under 50K miles. I gave been driving since 1965 in some very old vehicles, and NEVER replaced a starter at low mileage. Also none of them til now needed a second battery, (my other car is not a Caterpillar 4) and none had a battery where you could not get to it. I swear- all the car companies hate their customers, have the dealers rape them, and don’t want us to keepvwhicles past 30K miles. For me, I am going to start checking where all the usual components that need replacement are, and cross a bunch of vehicles off a buying list, for things like a belt operated oil pump (Ford), the V-8 you pay extra to get that runs like a V-4 (GM) and anything electric.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, I agree it can be a hassle to deal with those issues. Keep wrenching! 🔧 Kenny
For my 2023 Highlander if I don’t hit the off button I just feather the brake pedal @ a stop so the auto START/STOP doesn’t engage. It’s not worth the wear & tear for an extra 0.01 mpg
Jasper now has the option for the AFM delete with their reman 5.3s,comes with a tuner to shut it off in the computer. EPA is letting them doing it, there was an agreement. A little bit more money than then their reman with the AFM. Texas Speed has the kits to do the elimination of the AFM. The stop start, also burns up starters and Auto Start eliminator sells the kits to shut these off
Toyota has determined the number of starter cycles before replacement will set a dtc and disable the starter
Thats the Way ive thought about that myself putting all that extra wear on the starter battery and the engine itself. Its like a pointless feature that would think it would hurt more than help
Years ago they tried that mess with cylinders, Cadillac was one of them. You would get on the Highway and it would change to 6 and at certain speed, to 4. They were junk, and most people that kept them disabled it. You would think they would learn from the past, nope. Just because we have computers doesn't mean it's going to work. The other thing the AFM or whatever, if they have a dongle, I would definitely get one. These new cars now days are crazy, and not all these new features are necessary just runs the price up more and they are too expensive to start with. $$$$ The only way to fix this mess is to quit buying them, but people still buy them regardless. The future is bleak when it comes to all that. We are screwed and nothing we can do about it. Politics, oh man don't get me started. Have a good one.
Daily driving wears out cars and they eventually must be replaced, also the devastation that road salt causes to auto and truck bodies and chassis is not appreciated by most of the public.
@@davidpowell3347 Yep, just toss it and get another one, it's only 80k.
If it's a benefit or logical it's illegal in NJ ............probably CA too......
AFM was developed to meet CAFE standards. It's more about gas mileage than emissions. They can measure gas mileage easier than emissions. The car manufacturers get a tax break for every fraction of a mile they can save. Thats why pickups are so much bigger than older trucks. Weight factors in also. Bigger trucks with smaller engines make meeting the standards easier. The AFM isnt the only problem with GM trucks. Built in slip in the torque converter to cushion the deactivation of cylinders ruins their transmissions also.
I believe you meant "Yukon McKinleys"
You're welcome.
AFM wasn't to save MPG in the real world, it was made to save gas in the EPA test. Same with start/stop.
I hear GM is about to build motors without AFM. 😊
Thank you election results.
Already have
They use DFM
Dynamic Fuel Management
It's AFM on steroids
Stop start is annoying but the DOD is not as bad the influencers would have you believe. With good maintenance I have seen plenty high mileage vehicles make it to the crusher with no lifter problems. Rust is a much larger problem.
Just like 5W30 vs OW20 a few 10ths of gas mileage VS saving your motor in the long run !!
My wife's 2019 VW Tiguan has the start/stop. Wife liked the feature until it wouldn't restart and almost got rear-ended. She had to put it in park, turn the ignition off, turn it back on, and start the engine to get it to start again! It happened a couple of times so I started looking into how to disable it. I found a company called B2BFAB that makes a harness to turn off the start/stop feature when you start the engine. Yes, I could just turn it off every time I start it, but for the price and easy installation, it was worth it! Now I don't have to remember to do it!
My son took all that shit out of a truck the cam failed in and put a regular cam and lifters and with a tune to make it happen he couldn't be happier
I am a chevy guy and a motorhead. I just got tired of all the failures and problems woth the 5.3 snd 6.2 engines. I now went 100% EV and my maintenance and repair costs are now zero. I will never ever buy another chevy or other ICE vehicle.
Thanks Kenny 👍
I have 2018 pacifica. I disconnected the battery cables going to the start/stop battery and wrapped them in electrical tape. My car no longer shuts off when I stop but I do have a warning light on the dash. My problem was the start/stop battery was going dead and draining the main battery. That problem was resolved too.
Had a Honda Pilot that had their version of AFM and I found a guy that made a little resistor to tell the computer that the coolant temp was 5 degrees colder. That was enough to disable the system. My son , unfortunately has a Silverado that had the system. I told him to get the disabler and he blew it off. When it failed and bent a pushrod- he did use the oprotunity to totally delete the system with a truck norris cam- headers, computer tune etc. He was lucky the failed lifter, bent pushrod didnt cause other internal damage. But it cost him $5 grand
That start stop technology is (in my mind at least ) the reason nobody stops at stop signs anymore- Extremely annoying !
AFM disabled is the way too go otherwise .You will be replacing 1,4,6,7 unless you never drive highway a lot .
@@sheerwillsurvival2064 it messed up more than the lifters on my family’s vehicles. I had to do full rebuilds on both vehicles twice. Of course back then there wasn’t any real info on the electronic delete and the mechanical delete was after I rebuilt. I wish I knew then what I know now. I would have gone with a crate motor, no AFM, and just did the electronic delete.
@ man that sucks .
Dawn is at 0700 in Hawaii today, February. Should be earlier in South Carolina where Kenny is at?
I love my 97 Chevy
Great video Kenny i would like to say something about AFM for chevys 5.3 liter and their ticking issues people need to change their vehicles oil on time especially on 5.3 i have 2011 Tahoe i bought it at thirty six thousand miles now it has one hundred forty thousand miles of it i change my oil every four thousand miles and i use Mobile 1 every time so far i have no ticking and it runs really good.
I have the 5.3 with the AFM in my Silverado 4x4 but haven't disabled. The previous owner had a Diablosport tuner that he used to turn it off that I had a chance to buy cheaply, wish I had. I wish the AFM did make my fuel economy better, I get like 12 in town and maybe 16 on the road.
I have 2017 yukon. I had a preformance shop delete AFM. It runs v -8 at all times. I know it still has those lifters. I installed a catch can and I am actually surprised how much crap i dump out. I have a shop appy Wool Wax every fall to undercarriage. I have 94,000 and trust it last. My 2000 suburban just rolled 230,000. She is getting pretty rusty as I did not know about Wool Wax back then. 😢
Great video Kenny.....I had a 2018 F150 had the auto/start stop crap i always shut it off when I started the truck....Got rid of the F150...The Ram truck doesn't have that garbage im so glad I don't have to deal with it
I promise not to send you any junk mail Kenny. I agree about afm and Start Stop
My Toyota the first time the stop/started activated I thought someone ran into the back of me it was so harsh. I told a couple of younger women at work because they were all.over social media I could find where they lived. I found one of their houses quickly and ingot called a creep.
Lets not forget about that 'expensive' battery you are prematuring killng with the start stop feature also.
I have researched many UA-cam post and website by ford tech and in Ford, you cannot permanently disable stop/start program. Some people plug in something into trailer connection with 3rd brake light because stop/start doesn't operate with trailer connected. As to the AFM I'm glad I'm a Ford guy. Yeah, I know Ford has as many issues as most every other manufacturers, or is it the other way around? My 2018 5.0 f150 doesn't consume oil and transmission was rebuilt by Ford dealership at 35,567 miles because of clutch drum repair. So it's running fine for now, just like any other brand will once stuff is replaced or repaired. But my 06 f150 with 176,539 miles with 4.6 v8 still purring like kitten. Had 100,000 miles service and go to go.
The only start/stop system I see that's worth keeping is the one the put on the 3.6 liter Rams with the generator system. That uses the generator to turn the crank with the belt it's driven by. It's actually one of the most smoothest ones I've driven, comparatively. But you're correct, the wear and tear doesn't seem worth it to me.
I buy a v-8 motor because I want an 8 cylinder motor. If I wanted a 4 cylinder motor, I'd buy a truck with a 4 cylinder motor. Chevrolet sells them. The Stop Start would just be annoying. As long as these features are standard equipment, I'll keep driving my 2004 Avalanche.
My thing with afm is if your using only 4 cylinders vs 8 the 4 are gonna have a harder load that. But I still have my humble 02 gmc pickup
Buddy has a late model Subaru with that auto start krap.. he said the car's dash computer tells him that he saves 1/10 of 1 gal PER TANK.. you can keep it!!
I saw a vid, might have been Faye Hadley, saying that Toyotas with will throw a code after a predetermined number of starts whether a fault exists or not, I was a large number though.
I know the newer Hondas allow the start stop to be turned off on the infotainment controls. It is pretty annoying when the cars shut off. Wear and tear on the car and starter is more expensive than any emissions savings. Metals and manufacturing of starters create more pollution than just simply allowing the car to just run normal.
The early eighties Cadillac V8/6/ 4 engines were a thing. I unplugged the DLR module on my vehicle. Lost my brake warning light but the headlights only come on when I command it plus that increased my battery life by years.
I used EFI LIVE to disable AFM while I was doing a bit tuning.
They also have Auto Stop-Start disablers.
Well use the shocks !
