Don't overthink driving it, I have had my RE Capella for a few years now (using omp) and drive it like any other car, apart from giving it the odd squirt and letting it warm up nicely. Through the years (think mid '90s) I have had mates with various styles of rotaries and they were never fussy about how they drove them. They mostly had the same issue/s, broken gearbox, diff or axles, never engine issues. Back then of course, those were cheap to replace.
yeah, don't remove OMP and premix only, that then means you shouldn't engine brake (unless decel fuel cut is disabled, which has it's own issues), but yeah with OMP, no worries.
I owned a RX4 sedan in NZ for years and Rotary's are the BEST, you can drive them like a normal car but, in saying that there is things you can do with a rotary you ca not do with a conventional car. Use your motor to aid in your braking as it wont do any damage to your car ( I used to use the compression of my motor for braking and as a normal part of driving as i did my brakes, also you can drive along like you can in any other car however if you need to access the power of the car get used to dropping down to lower gears and revving it up. When you have your rotary staged up and you get that wah wah wah sound like you have a lumpy cam you will need to find the rev as to drive along on the Wah wah wah will make the ride uncomfortable. keep in mind these motors on a bench blow up at around 32000 revs, use the power. These cars loved to be driven and love to be worked, driving like a grandad will create more issues than giving it the gas. I would love to own another rotary, they are the best!!! Hope this helps mate
Engine braking doesn't harm the engine. The engine doesn't have any fuel going through it during engine brake, it also doesn't have spark. It's basically an over sized loud ass air pump during that phase, that's it. It's also why it will shoot fire from the exhaust. Rich air fuel mixture during boost load leaves unburned fuel in the exhaust system, when you lift throttle the engine pumps a ton of clean air through which will after burn in the exhaust with the previously mentioned unburned fuel
I think there were some issues with engine braking on rotaries specifically causing oil starvation? Something to do with how the seals need lubrication from the premix and fuel cutoff reduces it? Correct me if I'm wrong though
@@BigBabo as far as I know you're correct in your thinking/theory. The oil metering pump is designed to aid in lube/cooling by squirting oil inside the combustion chamber, the issue lies with the omp is a part you would never know has failed. Until one day the engine has no compression. Most people tend to remove and block off the omp system and use premix in the fuel instead as a preventative measure. Lifting out of the throttle and coasting back down from redline potentially could accelerate apex seal wear since there is a lack of fuel/premix going through the engine, but it seems like a low stress moment where the motor is free spinning and combustion isn't happening. How bad this engine brake phase is unknown to an extent, pre mix helps cuz it doesn't combust. Personally I've not known of anyone who lost compression because of engine braking.
@@dukedub Ah I see, thanks for the explanation! Could the potential for seal degradation be worsened if you were to downshift into higher RPM's compared to the mid-ranges, or is the difference between free-spinning at 7k and 4k negligible?
If you have the factory OMP still connected, you're fine. If you're still worried just add 100ml of 2 stroke oil to a full tank. If you're STILL worried, just blip the throttle on the longer engine brakes
