This was a nice video, Matt. I do everything the same way that you do, except for 1 thing. I'm going to start now lol. Also, my annual subscription for SS will be up in February, I'm trying to get comfortable with separating manually and stop paying for the yearly. you think I should keep it or let it go?
Thank you! The time savings sep studio give you can be worth it until you get fast enough at doing it manually. I like to keep sep studio handy for fast seps.
I like your videos.. Already subscribed... How much do you charge for a one separation of 5 color spot with halftone dots .. Because i can't afford to buy those expensive rip software and separation studio. Also the separations mode is grayed out in my illustrator print dialogue box even if i select to print postscript file. So cant print cmyk or spot colors separately in pdf hence cant make halftone manually in photoshop
Hey man for this it has to be the ink that they recomend right? For the wet on wet ? Also I'm scared to print wet on wet 😳

Hey Matt, I have a question? I have Sep Studio 3, and I've had it. I think since 2014, is it worth upgrading to Sep 4
Sep Studio 4 is only worth it if you need the RIP software. It has a couple new features, but it's not that much of a change from Sep Studio 3.
@@mikeydesignssilkscreen473 I’m at that point wondering if I should up grade I got so long ago I’m not sure which version I have. I found out that they don’t support older versions and they will eventually become unstable and stop working 😡🤬
Hey bro separation studio 4 prints halftones without accurip? And if does do I need a black system for my printer or would it print dark films straight from the program?
For I llustrator I need to change setting to 60 40 40 100 for black dark films
Sep Studio 4 does have a built in rip. I just like to use Illustrator because it has better preproduction options, IMO.
@@EJSVARZ You'll need an all black ink system to really get a good dark film. Experiment with what you got if getting an all black system isn't in the cards right now. Just make sure you can't hardly see through the film.

Im new to screen printing and design. I dont really plan on doing alot of multi color designs for next year or so until i really get screening down good. but would like to know what you think from separation vs photo shop. i only have a 4 color press but it does micro registrations. i am also very patient with it knowing it was not the highest quality. But im stuck on buying seperation for like 300 or photo shop cause your subscription from photo is for a yr at like 130. Honestly ive seen how easy seperation is but just want to know whats your thoughts. like is it worth the one time purchase of separation vs the subscription from photo shop. Im thinking if I can get multi color designs down really good separation is best but do I really need the other program they offer with it. Neways getting to long just hit me with ur 2 cents thanx
The best thing for you would be learning Photoshop. Separation Studio is okay, but check out our plugin that works with Photoshop and does the same thing. actionseps.com

Is there a way to specify pantone colors in Separation Studio?
There is, but it'll be based on a color that's already pulled. Double click the color you want to change and give it that spot color. Otherwise you'll have to open the document up in Photoshop or Illustrator and asign a spot color.
how do I get reg marks on the layers tho?? when I print seperate colors
We bring ours into Illustrator with a premed template. Check out some of our other videos showing this process.

Why is the company named Mikey designs. Isn't your name matt?
Mikey is a nickname I had as a kid and it just sounded more interesting than Matt's Designs, or Chevalier Designs which no one would ever pronounce correctly or spell correctly.

Also makes for good convo and a little back story as to why I do what I do for living. All started out when I was a kid, nicknamed Mikey...
Separation Studio 4 sucks, almost ruined 2 designs, it is a low level program that has problems generating the black screen, you have to take the files and open them up in photoshop to edit severely, you mine as well just manually separate it.
The best software is Tseps sold by Scott Fresener, he knows screen printing completely from way back, his stuff works for people that do quality work.
IMO, the best way to sep is manually in Photoshop. Sep Studio does okay. It's not a cure all.

Well you're right but TSeps is photoshop, its an automated plugin that adjusts settings and actions for screen printers which gives you a menu depending on what type of design your separating, it separates it in 20 sec. and your left with tweeking each channel, removing some or blending while using all of your photoshop tools.
the seps are fast and dependable, if you want to tinker than tinker with the extra time. they do have trial downloads.
