Oda watched "Esteban, Child of the sun!" Alias "The Mysterious City of Gold" which is the direct inspiration of One Piece! There are i think 2 videos talking about. The reason Oda never mentions it, its because One Piece would be spoiled, what the great war could be. Esteban has only 39 episodes, you can watch it on youtube in english if you are curious. ^^
I didn't know people had talked about the connections between the two series. Having recently rewatched the series, you can definitely see the parallels between the lore surrounding Mu and Atlantis and the lore regarding the void century (although you can really see it once you get to Egghead though), so I'm glad I'm not the only one who made the connection. Plus given that the series is from 82-83, was produced by studio Pierrot who later did Naruto, and did air in Japan before other countries like France, it's very likely that Oda came across the series when he was younger

@@daddynanners3944 Dude, don't get mad. I think we all love Oda here. And he is pretty right in his take. Obviously, the story and characters are totally different, but if you have seen Esteban, Child of the SUN (or The Misterious cities of GOLD) you will probably know that One piece takes a lot of inspiration from it. You can check out videos of the parallels in youtube, if you doubt it. And it's not bad taking inspiration, if you reas One piece you should know that Oda has put in it reinterpretations of fables of many cultures in his work, references of many books, and from tv series or films. And still it's not bad, it's just inspiration that he can fit perfectly in his story.

Fairy Tale has copied characters from One Piece and nobody gets angry. Kickers main character has literally Tsubasas hairstyle and nobody cares.
I agree with Nick's take at the end of the video. Oda was reminiscing about his time with a friend. And although this friend turned out to be a criminal, that doesn't make his good memories with this friend change. The world is not black and white nor are people.

The manga business has always been an area that most people have an almost romantic idea of. The truth is very different, especially from an author's point of view. And the bigger the manga business got in general, the worse it got. Oda may now have 300 million dollars rather than 230 million dollars, but that's nothing compared to the market value of the One Piece brand. The actual market value of the One Piece brand is closer to 20.515 billion dollars. The mangaka is by no means the one who earns the most money from the story universe. Most of it goes into the publisher's pockets. And there, as in every other area of the economy, where the money is, there is the real power. Even if the mangaka is the creator of the basic idea and at the same time the one who continues to develop the story, in the manga business the author is rarely the real main owner of the story universe. Otherwise, various mangaka would have very different amounts in their accounts; Oda is just the most extreme example. But what is potentially worst for a mangaka is not that others are making big money with your work. The worst thing is that if you are no longer the main owner of something, others may decide what happens to it. In the manga business, there are editors for this. In most other areas of the global media industry, the editor stands exactly between the author and the publisher, offering suggestions for solutions, changes and tips. However, the final decision still lies with the author. In the manga business, the editor is much closer to the publisher and therefore primarily pushes through its interests. However, in the manga business, nothing is published until the editor has given his OK. This is possible because every mangaka has signed contracts with their future publisher. This means that you are ultimately no longer the real boss of your own story. And if things go badly for you, you ruin your health and often not just your own private life, just so that others ultimately decide what happens in your life's work. Many mangaka write things from the start that they themselves would not normally write. Simply because they know their editor and know that he will not accept anything else. And the editors in turn, due to their proximity to the publisher, are primarily interested in profits and only secondarily in a good story. This has already been the downfall of many stories.

The work-life balance in Japan is often no longer healthy even for the average person. Anything on this scale, the everyday life of various mangaka looks like, is extremely harmful to health. Oda has two children who he certainly wants to spend time with. And they certainly want to spend time with him too and aren't interested in him dropping dead tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that Oda, like many other mangaka, works so extremely hard on their work because they're afraid. Afraid that they'll end up being one of those whose life's work was destroyed by some greedy publisher.

Like i love naruto, and by that, i love the beautiful mind of kishimoto that came up with such a story... now, suppose he was arrested for some illegal stuff, I wouldn't be able to love naruto anymore because it's the creation of his mind. Who knows maybe his sick mindset was presented by his story, the parts of the story that I really love, would suddenly be meaningless and it would give the impression of what went through the author's mind while writing this... it will truly be a sick feeling...
I will still try ruroni kenshin disregarding and hopefully forgetting whatever happened to the author, and who knows maybe it will turn out good. But to me everytime I watch an anime or read the manga, I am always like what led the author to make this story, what is he thinking, etc... and thinking that about the anime makes me love it even more. I can absolutely understand that, and in some cases of people like that what you saw as normal in the art, when you go back to it and watch it again, you can see how sick it was, and how it all makes sense now. respect for Oda, yet still, you can't compare the sales of 100+ book volumes with f.E 7 Harry Potters (or other authors). Referring to the original video creator ofcourse. In terms of books sales itself, yes, but dividing the sales through the volume of tankobons itself, the fan base or number of reached readers isn't nearly as high as other works out there. It's not even 10 mil readers, also the price for one tankobon is usually not even the half as a novel... Not complaining or anything, just saying. In terms of book sales One Piece might even go higher on the list, but that's the "curse" of endless or extremely long storys.

But in bleach case, it’s not just ended in crazy way, it was rushed (in kubo defense he was sick and jump forced him to finished it but even if you are sick, as an author you are responsible with your own craft cause other mangakas are like that, so yeah im still bitter despite the reason), about the ending it was totally out of nowhere ending like, after the ending you would question yourself with the manga, what the hell happened? Why it is end like this? Why this? Why that? What happened with this guy? What happened with them? With those? Why this happened? Is kubo following naruto or smth? And etcs, so the disappointment will doubled or even tripled.
