    I made a lightsaber from recycled materials, sheet metal, plumbing and electrical parts, and metal wire, but it helped having all the tools I already owned. It turned out looking very industrial and worn. It's heavy too. I built it so it would have room for a crystal chamber and other compartments (not a 3D printed one, but some quartz). It turned out great. Just need to polish it with a buffing wheel to give it a nice shiny finish. Making more now to sell to a couple friends who loved it.

    I love these SLA resin tank printers and their high resolution. The Form Labs 2 has a layer thickness as thin as 1 thou. Expensive and smaller build volumes, but they make standard FDM printers look like a machine squirting toothpaste.

    I have a $300 PLA printer and I'm pretty sure that, even with careful settings, I won't get either as crisp details or clear crystal/gem. There's details on there that I know won't be able to be printed, like the parallel tubes on the central part (or they will be covered by the supports' flashs). I love this model and it's beautifully designed, props to Sean - but this is like advertising exotic cars to college students. That's clearly out of range. I'll give it a go, but that will be just out of curiosity.

    I've been looking at a lot of lightsaber designs over the last month. Being able to bludgeon them to death with the hilt is a classic feature of Sith lightsabers. Not casting aspersions, just sayin'. I'm very fond of Ashoka's new ones, and Rham Kota's. (very understated)

  • @bugman72
    @bugman72 8 років тому

    Have you tried printing this using an FDM printer and if so, were you able to get close to the same fit and tolerances as the SLA? Would love to print one of these out on my modified Prusa I3.
    I do have a question regarding the electronics for this. You didn't specify anywhere during your discussion on the electronics portion of the build about using a resistor on the LED. Are you using one? In my experience, using an LED without a resistor, even if the voltage of the battery is basically the same as the LED's nominal voltage, will result in premature failure of the LED. Even a small value resistor (0.5 ohm) will be enough to protect the LED. I would hate to have to take everything apart later on in order to replace the LED just because a resistor wasn't used.

    • @TheDanEfranChannel
      @TheDanEfranChannel 8 років тому

      They did briefly mention using a resistor, but didn't go into any detail. You're right that it's important to include one in almost any LED circuit.

    I sort of shocked that may of the people watching this don't own 3D printers. The one used in this video is crazy overpriced. If you are looking to make small parts like this you can get a cheap $200 3D printer to play around with.

    • @lutobor13
      @lutobor13 8 років тому

      You can't print such small details on cheap FDM printer. You'll never be able to make anything even close. SLA printers are only ones which can make such details and tolerances, and they ain't cheap.

    • @RAMII19780529
      @RAMII19780529 8 років тому +1

      +Veles Vapes Even the cheap ones can get down to 0.05mm layer heights and have XY positional accuracy to 0.01. If you use a 0.2mm nozzle you can print details to about 0.25mm. I have a printer that can. Its an original PrintrBot Simple, with some modifications, it cost about $350 a few years ago. The stuff selling for around $200 looks more solid than that was. Tinker with it until you get the results you want. While there are some limitations, printing this light sword isn't one of them.

    'How to build a lightsaber'. - All you need is an incredibly expensive piece of equipment.. Thanks Tested, all of about 6 people watching this will be able to make it..

      A screwdriver is not an incredibly expensive piece of equipment.

      Clearly. However in order to have any parts to 'screw' you need a 3d printer..

      MajorJim!
      Right, but nearly every college or university has one. You can use them if you pay for the materials.

    So I usually only watch Adams videos, and this one tells me why. Norm is doing nothing. At least with Adam, he being there means something. Sean on the other hand...well you can glue this, and glue that and I did this...Explain the materials you used, thats what you arent painting it for; explain, I dont know, something.

    Hey Guys, its been a while since the video. Great work on that saber, but how about that one: www.thingiverse.com/thing:3703804 ? Much more complex and extremely detailed. It would be very nice if you could do that build :-D
