A little bit of context for the exam. What Serie is checking is peoples reaction to her mana. Most are either afraid or dont even want to imagine fighting her or see themselves wining. There a few that do. Frieren reperesents well a mage from the era of peace so of course shes not oen who wants to fight hence why she failed. But Fern surpassed serie's expectation. She didnt want to fight, she wasn't scared, she was simply paying attention and did something only 1 other person is stated to have done. And it was at a glance. Her mana is being suppressed. That wasnt even the point of the test, she just showed up and saw the face beneath the mask.
Serie looks at its characters more than their reactions to its own meaning. For example, she would have had a better chance if she had been Lawine instead of Kanne, but she was eliminated because she chose the wrong card in the second exam. Frieren is someone who is strong but wants to swim in safe waters. If it weren't for Heiter, she wouldn't have left the peaceful southern lands alone. (There is a big difference between the demons in the northern plateau and those in the south. Even Aura is powerless against the demons we will see later.) In the next episode, each of the wizards who passed the exam were tested in a different way and became first-class wizards thanks to their characters.
The test applies to other participants who met Serie the first time, but not Frieren, as she had already met her a thousand years ago. Frieren had been familiar with Serie's mana and personality for a long time, and Serie knew this clearly. What Serie spoke to Frieren at first were all trash talk, until her question asking Frieren's favourite spell. Serie wanted to know whether Frieren had changed, and Frieren's answer is just within her expectation, that is, Frieren just wanted to continue her life in her own way, and would not care if Serie gave her pass or not.
2:03 Serie says that the magic to create a field of flowers is useless, but nevertheless it is the magic that Serie likes the most because with it she remembers her daughter, Flamme, perhaps that is why she hates so much to see Frieren say that it is her magic favorite, because that technique is something that Serie taught her daughter... and knowing that Frieren also loves her, must bring back very sad and strong memories of those years when Flamme was a little girl at her side... 🥹👌🤍🧡💛
Maybe she's jealous of how much Flamme loved Frieren. Lol their names are "Fire" for a woman who was passionate about and started humanity's magic and "Frozen" for the elf who seems to never change and whose expression is... Stoic. Series does not seem like someone who is mature enough to share anyone's affections. She does not strike me as someone who would share much of anything merely because she has the maturity of a toddler.
It more serie is someone who very hypocritical and prideful but not an idiot. She will never admit she wrong in her view of magic is a weapon or tool to kill but she is sentimental about her former pupils who she goes out of her way to remember despite claiming she doesn’t care to remember them. Her whole stick is basically she puts on a front as an uncaring warrior or immortal but she does have a sentimental side she never shows anyone. it just Frieren the only one who lived long enough to kind of see through it. Basically she just a subtle tsunade.
It's because she took in a human girl who became her greatest student knowing full well that this girl would be taken from her after a mere heartbeat to such a long lasted existence. Yet her daughter brought her a grandchild with great potential of her own, a child just as greedy and loving for her mother as Serie is for her daughter. And now this grandchild has brought a daughter of her own to show the matriarch of the family almost as if it has become a tradition... so perhaps Serie can see that while her daughter was taken far too soon, the trouble maker is still around continuing to annoy her mother with the little ones she has left behind.
Serie never hates or being jealous of Frieren. Actually no matter she gives Frieren pass or fail means nothing, as Frieren is already far more powerful than the other human mages. Serie has aleady expressed her interest on Frieren a thousand years ago (teach her whatever spell she likes), but Frieren rejected. Serie knows that Frieren would just choose to live on a way she likes, and would not listen to her teaching or instructions. Therefore, granting Frieren a pass is meaningless, and the identity of 1st class mage may even became a burden to Frieren's freedom.
These are useful spells though . Imagine blooming a field of rice flower that would later become rice , or cleaning clothes with just a spell when we feel particularly grimy in the middle of the day .
As much as Serie makes jest of Flamme's flower spell, you see her in this giant room with flowers everywhere for the interviews. I think deep down, she greatly misses her regardless of their different ideals. Serie is just too used of the huge lifespan differences between humans and elves that its extremely difficult to divest too much care to something that inevitably leave your life, that it feels pointless to try. Serie at this point is just wary of forming any strong connections, knowing that they will someday leave her life just like Flamme who she raised like a daughter from childhood.
It funny that Flamme thought Friren all kinds of offensive spells and mana restraining technique, but what actually ends up indirectly defeating the Demon King is Flammes Flower spell. Spoilers: I'm not sure whether they would reveal it in the next episode, but she does indeed misses not only Flamme, but all her other disciples, it just that like Frieren, they do not understand emotions even of their own. The difference between friren and Serie when it comes to emotions is that Frieren it bothered her enough to try to understand it better.
@@wahidpawana424 Flamme is Serie's first human student, and perhaps the one with greatest achievement ever. She must be the most special one to Serie, just like her own daughter.
What she said to Lernan made me genuinely sad. That guy dedicated his life to magic, is easily her best student, she even feels he has the ability to defeat Frieren. Only to get called a disappointment because he’s at the end of his life. Even spending an entire human life isn’t enough for her. It’s just a waste in the eyes of Serie.

Because Stark will do almost anything to lift Ferns spirits, she may not smile but her body language tells how happy she is
So the Elves can't resist Fern's Mom energy?
The true potential of humans
Can't resist Methode's either
Humans can't resist elves either

Frieren knew that Serie would fail her no matter what because they don’t really get along
And then Land didn't even show up and she was impressed because that needs some audacity 🤣

Serie didn't teach flamme that flowerbed making spell. Flamme learned that from her biological mother who was also a mage
