- The men's World Record in the 4x400m relay, set at the 1998 Goodwill Games. Relay members were Jerome Young, Antionio Pettigrew, Tyree Washington and Michael Johson. Do your best to ignore the commentary by Carol Lewis.
This is a fun race... when you're not running it
Ramiro Roman
It's pretty exciting when you run it though.
Michael Myers!!!!!!
Ramiro Roman bro I run that race and when the adrenaline kicks in omg bro it’s a feelin you can’t ever describe
@@levrac68
I think you mean to reply to @Gohario FTW
I run this it’s not my favorite but it’s one of my best races I run at meets because when you are behind and you have to go get somebody you get it done and you don’t even feel tired because of all the adrenaline
Thanks for setting things straight. Too bad for the other guys. Same thing with Marion Jones. Her bad choice affected the others on the team.
In sprint relays at this level, the runners are in lanes 4-8 and the other lanes aren't filled to avoid the tight turns at their speed. The second runner came out of lane 5 and just took the right angle from where they cut in down to lane one to make a straight line at high speed. Fastest point is a straight line from A to B.
WR was set with 2nd leg running in 2nd lane way past the 500m mark. Time would even be lower if he cut in on the backstretch where he was supposed to. I don't think anyone should talk about who is "clean" unless you are pointing to clear proof.
@BobbySteels7 Johnsons 100 PR was 10.13 when he was a senior at baylor in the late 1980's... the world record ( in 1998- the time this relay was run-) was 9.84 by Canadian/ Jamacian Donavin Bailey. then when johnson got his last record- the 400- in 1999 the world record was 9.79 by Maurice Greene...... ya not 10.13. in your defense his last 100 split in his 19.32 was 9.19.. and he was extremely dominannt and practically un beaten from 1990-2000 which is why he was athlete of the decade.
@phastman99 Yeah and there was also a time where people didnt think he would break the 100 and 200 meter records either but they are shattered. And Bolt broke the 100 meter record after only running it during the track season of 2008. I think if bolt focused on the 400m he would break it by a long way.
@BobbySteels7 He didn't hold all of them. He held the 200m, 400m and 4x400m records. Never held the 100m record or 4x100m record, which, I'm pretty sure, are considered sprinting events.
The female announcer was Carol Lewis, Carl Lewis' sister. I disagree with your assessment that she was horrible but it is your opinion.
all under 44 seconds…
wow
the greatest 4x4 team ever was Andrew Valmon, Quincy Watts, Butch Reynolds, and Johnson at the '93 Worlds. Ran a 2:54.29 by themselves, broke the record by a second and a half, and included Johnson's 42.9 split
Agrees
Was that before or after the Butch Reynolds drug controversy..
It was Reynolds returning after his suspension
42.9 is faster than the official world record which is crazy, I’m assuming he ran that time due to the head start and gaining a few extra meters at the hand off though. Still a very impressive performance I’m sure it would be at least a 43 mid in an open
@@brettongarrick5517 it's the running start
This record was rescinded in 2008 when Antonio Pettigrew admitted to using HGH and EPO.The world record is now 2:54.29 and was set in 1993.
2:31 was like the perfect mid distance running form
Rekord PL 2:58.00
OD Haczek do Maćkowiak
I remember watching this live. I was screaming at the top of my lungs. This is very inspiring and memorable.

*_Whew!_* I know you're probably not reading this but I thought the headphones were busted for a sec!
Michael Johnson was absolutely amazing.
I couldn't focus on the race because of that annoying announcer lady, I had to mute the video.
When you so ahead you cant push yourself to run quicker
That lady should get more info in her head
that's carl lewis' sister carol.. she competed in track too and she was on the 80, 84, and 88 Olympic teams. won the ncaa long jump 2x, and competed on the world level for years.
Was she on the 88 team? I dont think so
you don't think so?? well you are wrong Sherlock.. look it up before you comment. she was a member of the long jump squad in 88 but didn't make the final round... do you know what you are talking about? I don't think so... actually, I KNOW so.
ndspeedster still.. USA teams biggest mission in that day was to get that world record. I don't know, but for me it would be more than enough motivation to run as fast as i can.
It sucks that Tyree & Michael did it the right way and yet they have to pay the price for the 2 knuckleheads.
Jason Montez nigga u for real right now?!?!?
This wasn’t a race 43.1 anchor Amazing
Great run but I wish Ernie Johnson called the race on his own-Carol Lewis is the worst of all time-I even liked the Juice doing the track commentary in '76 and '84 Olympics...
Awesome race! I love the 4x4!
And wow that girl is so dumb "You're in the lead so you can relax"... more like "You're in the lead now the pressures on 10x to keep the lead and run your ass off and not let your team down"
Apollys if you’re the best in the world you can relax.
my left ear is lonely
tyree washington went to my school!!! he is a good person. i even met his coach in college
wow Eddie Murphy is well fast!
Just imagine a 4x400 with the 4 best runners all time
You mean Johnson, neikerk ,bolt and norman
@@GolfAdventures101 Yeah, that's what I said, maybe Bolt could've been one of the greatest 400m runners of all time if he trained for it
@@GolfAdventures101 shut up
I don't think most people even realize how insanely fast this is. Many runners can't run sub-70, so for these guys to do 400 meters in almost 30 SECONDS less is insane! I can run a 5k in the mid 17s, but I don't think I could break 60 in a 400. These guys were insane!
lol if she would just bequiet!!! This is the greatest tho had to watch a couple times for sure ^-^
would this WR be taken away because of pettigrew?
Michael Johnson runs better than almost all cars on the planet.
Poland established new Polish national record of 2:58:00. Only within last couple years, Poland produced men fast enough to hope that it will be soon improved.
Robert Kolakowski Awesome, your country produced 4 runners who averaged 44.5 second splits.....not a small feat.
You see Poland in many Olympic finals in this event. But USA 400m runners are just on another level.
A new WR will happen in 2020, if not sooner. Poland set a new WR indoor 4x400 this month. The following weekend 3 US collegiate teams beat it. Sick!!!
Nope. The 4X400 record is very safe. In fact, this race was disqualified because Pettigrew later admitted to taking drugs but the current record is only a few hundredths away from this race. The top U.S. guys back in those days never ran together in an indoor 4 X 400 so those recent indoor records don't mean they can challenge this record. The record team had three guys who could all run 43.50 or faster out of the blocks. Maybe now that Michael Norman is starting to run really fast we might see a fast time by the U.S., but this WR is very safe. The average split (the AVERAGE split!!) was 43.57 for the WR. Not even the U.S. has a group fast enough to challenge it right now.
Drug cheats as it appears later on
Is it just the video or does Johnson have very small legs? :D
omg that woman
Michael Johnson,,, such a joy to watch.
Great race to watch, even though not the record.
1:11 "Ahhh shit! wher'es my number!"
Hi from the future
43.1 ain’t 42.9 but; ain’t it funny how everytime a world record is broken Michael Johnson seems to be around?
in high school an 11 second 100m dash is pretty damn good and to keep that pace for 400 meters thats pretty damn amazing
Yeah what you do when you get the baton is you get it in your left hand and as you are switching hands you put the baton in between your middle finger and ring finger and you grip it with your three big fingers and your ring finger and pinky rest under it and it tilts the baton back some so it looks like its more fluid with your arm.
Ok Carol Lewis is ridiculous. She seriously said 15-20 meters lead when obviously anyone with eyes can see that the lead they have is at least 60 meters maybe even 70. I dont know how she thought that big of a gap could be anywhere close to 20 meters come on man.
Hold on. I never knew they broke that record.
They did, but the IAAF removed the record in 2008 after Antonio Pettigrew admitted to doping. It's a really unfortunate turn of events.
www.reuters.com/article/us-doping-athletics-record-idUSPEK6263720080812
Might as remember this because our team this Olympic 2021 team in track choked. Yes, the pressure was to much for those youngins.
I don't know if Jamaica could break this but I do know Usain Bolt could have Michael Johnson's record in the open 400 if he trained for it. He is built for the 200 and the 400. He is just so damn fast he can pull off the 100 also. Watch out after London, he will be in the 4x400
Funny how they're celebrating, and teams are still coming in. That's how far ahead they were. 😳
Michael Johnson = The best of the best of the best.
lol thank you for mentioning to ignore the commentary from that bird.
Great race. I wish that woman commentator would have Shut up, annoying as hell.
@jbrumundsmith All that's true. She's still annoying.
I was like 1st guy was slaying it..
Hands off, oh fuck this guy is even better
I never understood why they did not homologate this record and the one made in Germany 1993 is still valid
Will someone PLEASE put carol lewis out of her misery and all ours
Speed and endurance - one of my favorite distances.
Carl and Michael, two of the best runners of all time!!
@Zolio6I never liked Carol's voice either but I think the your criticism of her stating that the other runners can relax and run their race is way off. what she was saying is true. A more relaxed 400m runner will run faster than a tight runner who is fighting for every stride and then has nothing the last 60m to give for maintaining velocity. I don't believe she meant that MJ would go out and run a lack luster 45 leg, but that they could relax and focus on HIS race phases without distractions.
wow, how igorant can you be? you can't knock someone who loves the sport. trust me... 3:17 is not a whole nother level of anything, waht is that... mid 49's across the board? Family, if your gonna knock someone for what they do, please come with some honorable stats. I was pushin 46 mids in high school and I wasn't the fastest on my team. get your weight up, then encourage those who try to lay there heart on the track.
"dus" a 400 in "like 50" my ass - no 13 year old who could do a 50 would be racing with those other people you mentioned. and as I was saying, bragging about a 47 4by100 is bad for a normal runner. for a bunch of thirteen year olds it might be ok, but even in high school it's not very good, and in college it would get rocked hardcore even by D3 teams.
So MJ in his hey-day was faster than teamates on juice!!Wow!
US athletics desperately needs to clean up its act though.Cant help feeling suspicious bout every new exciting US athlete making a wave. The notoriety for US athletes has become truly embarrassing. Its not the just new guys, but the guys from 10 yrs ago too! Damn!
Yes I am a College professor, and an assistant coach, amongst other things, and proud to be. But what I am not is an immature individual who blatantly causes unnecessary commotion for not particular reason. I definitely put her in check about the issue at hand and it's your choice to accept and understand. Thanks
I call you uneducated to show you exactly how it feels to be torn down by a fellow athlete, it's pointless and worthless family, also uncalled for, spend more time encouraging, and less time demoralizing and I bet life will treat you better than what it is now. No matter how it's treating you at this point. Grace and Peace~
not true genius. check any other 4x400 relay and they cut in on the backstretch.
(2nd leg) If you're going to call someone a rookie, it would be a good idea if you could spell it (with and ie) ......I "suppose"...you meant "supposed" too. And I'm no rookie apparently you are though.
in light of what went on with this youtube waste of time fighting online, whatever you may call it, I do want to apologize, on behalf of myself and my sister, who was arguing online from what I am understanding. It wasn't me, and if it did cause negative attitudes than I apologize.
i dont feel good bout those runners anymore...not after 2 doped, nd 1 iz suspected rite now of it..
Like, do we really NEED to dope???????
USA was the best b4 we started dopin, so as i would say in my own words, "if the program works, why change it?"
The announcer who was a lady was completely horrible.
Getting the distances for the leads wrong, saying they can relax more, her nasally voice...
Regardless, that was an absolutely amazing race by each leg.
lol at the description. Carols commentary wasnt bad
it was just announce that this world record has been stripped by the IAAF. I guess the world record that was set back at the 1993 worlds, Valmon, Watts, Reynolds and Johnson will be, again, the current world record!
ROFL.....prejudice never really shows much reason. it is funny though how we continue to own on a continuous basis and people still try and hate. Let me guess....what we did in Greece a few years back was "roids" too huh?
where i want to be huh???? hmm don't want to teach or be an assistant coach lol In two and a half years i'll be a PT and PT average salary here is 203,431 if you do home health... thats more than both ur jobs combine pal lol
@jbrumundsmith
Man, if you think boycotting the 1980 Olympics is the dumbest decision in history it means you either have a tendency towards hyperbole or you are completely ignorant of history.
i like how that woman can read michael johnsons mind. esoecially while he's running. thats relly difficult tofocus all thta mind reading enerrgy on a moving target, especially one moving that fast
lol thats slow son in 2004 we run the state hs meet at lsu with a 3:17...3:29 sucks i think our junior high ran that but then again louisiana, cali and florida is on a whole nother running level
'In his mind right now, he's like PUSH PUSH PUSH - Come on turn it over... To name but a few quotes! Every race I see on here where that woman commentates on I feel like pulling my hair out
they didnt pass the baton well to each other... i mean if Michael ran a little earlier and catch the baton behind him instead of turning around to get it off Washington, they would be faster.
uneducated huh, lol I graduate from the university of louisiana in december with a bsn in nursing then ill be at lsu in shreveport in physical therapy school..but thanks anyway man lol
Wonder what it would have been if 2nd leg didn’t stay in lane 2 around the curve lol
These guys just fried the track, and set a new world record!!!
sadly i reacon this record will be beaten by jamaica if they put it as this micheal frater, asafa powel, yohan blake, and of course the fastest man alive usain bolt
I see, like everybody else, that they set up the WR, so why the IAAF do not recognize this time, and it's still displaying the Sttugart's record? Is it because the GwG?
it is a 2:54.29 that record still stands to this day it's just that 2:54.20 is not a record because antonio pettigrew admitted doping. and jerome young was innocent.
I feel sorry for Michael Johnson I think he may well be stripped of a few world/olympic titles and have this record erased as well as a result of Pettigrew's admission.
@ranhill With certainty to 8/100ths of a second? I don't think so. That's less than a meter difference (a half step) between a world record and not a world record.
omg im type disappointed in pettigrew doping.
i really hope johnson didnt dope to tell the truth...my opinion iz dat he did..dont listen to my opinion tho..
And i wont go to school for that long to be anyone's assistant in anything and i def won't be a grown man on youtube lol get a life buddy go do some assisting
the guy that ran anchor is all chill afterwards he doesnt even look tired!! thats not fair! after i run the 4X4 im like dead and puking my guts out! :(
Ok I got the answer (and the official time was 2:54.20) but in 2008 the iaaf met and scrapped the record...antonio pettigrew admitted to doping
probably faster.
theyre doing the equivalent of 100m in about 10.75 seconds, which is still an amazing time for 100 by itself let alone 400.
why does it say in the iaaf website that the 2:54:29 time is the world record and not this 1? was some1 taking steriods or something???
rip antonio pettigrew. it hasn't been confirmed as a suicide but i hope that you find peace regardless of the circumstances. bless
i KNOW RIGHT?!?!? SHE needs to stop commentating these things. she is over zealous, loud and wrong about 80 percent of the time...lol
43.1 isn't that great. Wariner had a 42 split when he was 3rd leg for Baylor's 4x4 at the National Champs a few years ago.
You don't know much about track and field, 43.1 is great , not many people ever run low 43's.
And wrong! Wariner never split 42 seconds. His fastest split is 43.1. MJ and now Michael Norman has the two fastest splits ever. (Mj 42.9 and Norman 43.06)
The lady was completly wrong with the distance 15-20m lead really? that looked like a 100m lead to me or just a little less
Dang, it takes good concentration and will to run 43.1 when u aren't being pushed, thats wat u call mental toughness...
omg shuuutup carol
You know her name?
How did the announcer know "It's gonna be a world record!" with 100 meters to go? They only got it by 0.08 seconds?
2.54 .29 minutes 😃Go to 2.54.21 minutes 😂😂😂
this is not the WR and I dont know why?? can somebody tell me...cause its still 2:54:29 according to usatf.org
How does ppl like michael johnson hold the baton like dat? It looks so smooth. Can somebody answer my question?
@jbrumundsmith the first 100 of his world record 200 would have broke the 100m world record at that time.
