    In sprint relays at this level, the runners are in lanes 4-8 and the other lanes aren't filled to avoid the tight turns at their speed. The second runner came out of lane 5 and just took the right angle from where they cut in down to lane one to make a straight line at high speed. Fastest point is a straight line from A to B.

  • @quadbravo
    @quadbravo 15 років тому

    WR was set with 2nd leg running in 2nd lane way past the 500m mark. Time would even be lower if he cut in on the backstretch where he was supposed to. I don't think anyone should talk about who is "clean" unless you are pointing to clear proof.

    @Trackmaster14 13 років тому

    @BobbySteels7 Johnsons 100 PR was 10.13 when he was a senior at baylor in the late 1980's... the world record ( in 1998- the time this relay was run-) was 9.84 by Canadian/ Jamacian Donavin Bailey. then when johnson got his last record- the 400- in 1999 the world record was 9.79 by Maurice Greene...... ya not 10.13. in your defense his last 100 split in his 19.32 was 9.19.. and he was extremely dominannt and practically un beaten from 1990-2000 which is why he was athlete of the decade.

  • @Kelvinllovejr
    @Kelvinllovejr 14 років тому

    @phastman99 Yeah and there was also a time where people didnt think he would break the 100 and 200 meter records either but they are shattered. And Bolt broke the 100 meter record after only running it during the track season of 2008. I think if bolt focused on the 400m he would break it by a long way.

  • @jbrumundsmith
    @jbrumundsmith  13 років тому

    @BobbySteels7 He didn't hold all of them. He held the 200m, 400m and 4x400m records. Never held the 100m record or 4x100m record, which, I'm pretty sure, are considered sprinting events.

    • @peters6119
      @peters6119 5 років тому

      Nope. The 4X400 record is very safe. In fact, this race was disqualified because Pettigrew later admitted to taking drugs but the current record is only a few hundredths away from this race. The top U.S. guys back in those days never ran together in an indoor 4 X 400 so those recent indoor records don't mean they can challenge this record. The record team had three guys who could all run 43.50 or faster out of the blocks. Maybe now that Michael Norman is starting to run really fast we might see a fast time by the U.S., but this WR is very safe. The average split (the AVERAGE split!!) was 43.57 for the WR. Not even the U.S. has a group fast enough to challenge it right now.

A more relaxed 400m runner will run faster than a tight runner who is fighting for every stride and then has nothing the last 60m to give for maintaining velocity. I don't believe she meant that MJ would go out and run a lack luster 45 leg, but that they could relax and focus on HIS race phases without distractions.

    Ok I got the answer (and the official time was 2:54.20) but in 2008 the iaaf met and scrapped the record...antonio pettigrew admitted to doping

  • @333cale

    probably faster.
    theyre doing the equivalent of 100m in about 10.75 seconds, which is still an amazing time for 100 by itself let alone 400.

    why does it say in the iaaf website that the 2:54:29 time is the world record and not this 1? was some1 taking steriods or something???

    43.1 isn't that great. Wariner had a 42 split when he was 3rd leg for Baylor's 4x4 at the National Champs a few years ago.

      You don't know much about track and field, 43.1 is great , not many people ever run low 43's.

      And wrong! Wariner never split 42 seconds. His fastest split is 43.1. MJ and now Michael Norman has the two fastest splits ever. (Mj 42.9 and Norman 43.06)

    How did the announcer know "It's gonna be a world record!" with 100 meters to go? They only got it by 0.08 seconds?

    @jbrumundsmith the first 100 of his world record 200 would have broke the 100m world record at that time.
