You stumbled across some physics:
Kinetic energy = 0.5 × mass × velocity squared
Soooo, you can see that increasing the mass (making the bullet heavier) increases the energy in a linear fashion, but increasing the velocity increases the energy exponentially.
There's also the matter of transferring that energy to the target...
So not only was that 50gr bullet likely carrying more energy than the other 2, but it dumped partically 100% of that energer into the mellon.
The other huge benefit is recoil reduction, especially if you have a compensated or ported gun. Comps work most efficiently the lighter and faster the bullet is. These are the most comfortable loads I found for shooting out of a micro 9 mm, but shooting them out of a compensated g19 feels closer to a 22LR than anything else.

The Liberty ammunition is probably the most underrated 9mm ammo. Lighter weight and recoil, epic damage, no penetration. The old Liberty videos showed the results of against store bought chickens. Amazing!

In the kinetic energy formula speed is squared while mass is not. So if you had the option to either double the speed or double the grains for hitting power your best bet is to always opt for speed, especially in what would be typical pistol ranges. Kinetic energy on target will change with distance so the 40-50 yards in the Eli Dickinson situation heavier "maybe" better. It would be interesting to see at what distance each weight speed combination would flip flop

True, but energy is not the deciding factor in a bullet's stopping power. It's one of many factors but not the only one or even the most important. If a bullet can't make it through a watermelon it will not likely be able to penetrate deep enough to hit vital organs or the CNS. The Lucky Gunner video explains this in detail.

I have those civil liberty defense rounds in 9mm, .223, and 300Blackout. Absolutely love them. Less recoil too.
They're spun on a lathe and are super consistent and therefore accurate. They also go through car doors just fine - they only expand once they hit a liquid substance that causes the hydraulic expansion.

I’ve been carrying those Civil Defense 50gr rounds for years. They hit like a freight train and weigh less than half of 115gr. The weight difference is massive at the end of the day when carrying! So much lighter!

@@Meh-hr7gq it’s a tad snappier than 115gr, but it certainly feels less snappy than 124gr when I shoot both from various pistols. It has always seemed to me like this 50gr 9mm is comparable to 5.7x28 since they have similar velocities and piercing abilities. It’s the only ammo I like to carry…and it’s lighter!! I wonder what the total bullet weight of this compared to 5.7 is. It might be the best bugout bullet and caliber. I mean, you can start off with something similar to 5.7 as far as weight and velocity, but if you run out, it will be MUCH easier to find 9mm than anything else. Just a thought.

I think it would be difficult to get much lighter than 29gr like FN SS198 which for me, has been fast and impressive.
I agree about the weight! Back in the 80’s, CCI made a 45 caliber round, 200 gr., with a deep, wide, hollow point, dubbed, “the Flying Ashtray!” I miss that round, but it came out in Blazer Aluminum cartridges, which saved even more weight.
Berdan priming, used on the aluminum cases, are reputed to be more survivable over time.

@mrorange3490 Depends on what kind of gun you have. I have a Glock 20 (which is a full sized) and carry OWB with an overshirt. It would probably be impractical to carry IWB though.
10mm has stout enough recoil that I'm not sure if it'd be good to carry on anything smaller than a compact firearm, so if you're comfortable with concealed carrying a compact or larger then it should be fine.
I have both a G20 and a G30 (with 10mm conversion barrel). The 20 is for mountain trex and the 30 is EDC with Liberty. The G30 is the same size as the G19, no problem concealed.@mrorange3490

I used that brand in my glock 29, which is 10mm. I was being shot at by 2 carjackers and they both missed me, missed my Honda. Had me running in zig zag pattern, while using suppressive fire. Only hit one of them, in the chest. Doctors saved him and told detectives they've never seen damage like that. The carjackers were kids under 15. Stay safe, stay armed. 2A Baby!!!

I love that you are using the model 59, you never see that pistol anymore and it's one of my favorites. My father carried it on duty for a brief time in the 1980s as a police officer in San Bernardino CA and my grandfather used it as his nightstand gun for 20 plus years after my dad gave it to him when he went to a beretta 92 in the 90's. I carry it sometimes when I'm feeling nostalgic. So cool.
A guy I work with told me about these and I bought some a while back and have been carrying in my Glock 17. There is a video showing the little 50 grain at 2000+ fps blowing through soft armor as well. The reduction in carried weight is greatly appreciated as well.

@@Horror_Film_Aficionado incorrect. The speer gold dot is similar to the norma ammo in this video. Overpenetration concerns, on top of the bullet itself rarely expands like it's supposed to. This liberty civil defense stuff is the best personal defense 9mm ammo on the market atm, when used against a soft target.
The liberty civil defense absolutely will not pierce soft armor. With an average of only 6-7" of penetration in ballistics gel (aka an unprotected soft target), with expansion starting on average at the 1.25" mark, how would it pierce soft armor?
I have the 10mm liberty defense ammo. They are absolutely ridiculous. What is so great is you actually get all the energy of the round in the target. They can penetrate level 3 armor. But once they hit soft tissue or liquid the cavity fill and they literally explode. 780 ft lbs of energy. And none is wasted. You don’t have to worry about over penetration. But it will penetrate enough to destroy whatever it hits. I was very impressed with them.
AWESOME demonstration, as always Brother! I switched to this round for my personal protection a few years back, not long after it came out. They are a little expensive but not really when you look at the reason you are carrying to start with.

Wow! By cutting the weight in half to 50 grains and doubling the velocity to 2200 fps the energy is doubled - over 500 ft-lbs. That carries it to the next level! And no worry about over penetration.
If it had a tip of tungsten with that velocity it would go through level 3 armor, so imagine that plus a switch 😆
As far as the weight and speed of the 50 grain, it's similar to a .223 round. Light weight and extremely fast, for pistol. Watching how much more energy the 50-grain bullet dumped into the watermelon compared to the heavier rounds was an eye opener.
Energy is important in ballistics. Speed is not everything and weight is not everything. You need a balance. Whenever the bullet leaves the body, that is all wasted energy. You want the bullet to stay in the body for maximum energy transfer.
Velocity takes exponitaly more energy

Since Energy is 1/2MV² (M = Mass and V = Velocity), one should already know that the velocity is a HUGE factor since its the velocity "squared". The actual energy values for each using the average speed seen by each is as follows,
REM 115gn @ 1140fps = 332lb/ft of energy
NORMA 108gn @ 1139fps = 311lb/ft of energy
LIBERTY 50gn @ 2135fps = 506lb/ft of energy
As we can see, there is about a 63% increase (+/- a % or two depending on if you compare to the REM or the NORMA) in energy for the 50gn LIBERTY's despite being less than half the weight (46% the weight of the 108's and 43% of the 115's) while only picking up about 53% average speed over the other two. Basically 4X% less weight @ 5X% more speed equated to a 6X% increase in energy.
The thing however is distance and loss of speed. That much lighter 50gn LIBERTY probably looses a ton of speed quickly to where at any decent distance, the other two are going to likely have more energy. As a personal defense ammo though, distance generally isn't going to be a concern since more than likely should you be in a situation to need it for defense, you'll likely be well within 25yrds.
*EDIT:* Corrected the average speed for the Liberty ammo since I accidently typed in 2200 (max speed) rather than 2135 like the average really is.

In hollow points, speed is absolutely critical. Each design has an expansion threshold. At & above that speed, expansion is reliable.
Below that speed, & you may as well save the beans & shoot FMJ's.

Maybe it's already been mentioned, but at 2614fps x 50gr that's 758lbs ME, or 97% of Buffalo Bore 180gr 10mm from a 5" pistol!
And out of the pistol at 2200fps x 50gr it's 537lbs ME or about the same as Federal Hydra-shock 158gr .357 Magnum from a 3.5" bbl or Buffalo Bore +P 185gr .45 out of a 4.6" bbl Glock 21!!
Yes, that is a nasty round. But in the end bullet placement is best and you also need to have the bullet pass the soft tissue and into the blood rich vital organs.

Yup. Liberty has been loaded in my EDC for awhile now. Another gun channel displayed Liberty 9mm defeating Level IIIA armor, and another showed very good ballistic gel results. I don’t know how you can go wrong with this amazing ammo.
I have a mag of it... I have that mag while in the car in case of a traveling gun fight so I can go through the car doors and glass easily...
BUT when I get out and am on foot I load my Hornady Critical Defense mag in my gun.... Which is a XD40... 165gr @ 1,175 ft/s. = 500 ft-Lb's...
The liberty Civil defense is 60gr @ 2,000 ft/s.. which is 530 ft-Lb's...
Both have their place and use...
Carry guns you should consolidate platforms and calibers. I own 45 acp and 9mm handguns of different brands but only keep my 9mm Glocks staged for defensive use. All my defensive guns use the same mags (except my single 26 mag won't go in my 17 or 34 of course) also if I find myself in a situation where I'm fighting along side law enforcement, 90% chance we can share magazines if needed.

Wow. That 50 grainer really is an explosive bullet. That would be a perfect Home defense or personal defense type bullet. Can you imagine what it would do if it were to hit something with Bone. It would more than likely explode or even cause a greater amount of Hydrostatic Shock than a heavier hollow point bullet going much slower. I'm sold on it. Now if only I can get some.
It turns a pistol caliber carbine into a very capable gun specially say a head shot at 200 plus yards

Impressive…yes. What happens if the bullet goes through demin or winter clothes? I bought some but not what I carry. (in theory, the 50 grain is close to a 7" 5.56 rifle. At least within 7-10 yards)

Someone should send Paul Harrell a box of these. It's got me wondering, would it penetrate through clothes, a rib, and mangle a bag of oranges? Or would it go all the way to the new and improved fleece bullet stop.
Speed increases the joules by a LOT! Where a heavier round becomes more relevant is for downrange energy retention and BC qualities. If the speed difference is negligible between two rounds, then the heavier one will pack more punch, but if the speed is significantly higher, then yes, that lighter round will pack more punch short range. I would have been curious to see that last round out of that carbine... I'm pretty sure that water melon would have exploded in a shower of pulp! As you know, it's always a toss-up between what the intended purpose of the round is and the range it will be used at and the barrel length it will be shot at... an easy example of that is let's say the .17HMR VS .22 LR... the HMR will pretty much explode on contact with less penetration than the .22 LR, and both of those rounds have their place depending on what you want to do with them and in what circumstances.... Hence the wide variety of loads and rounds. Where things get more complicated is when you try to choose between two calibers for an all-purpose round/caliber, but if you have the option of different loads within the same caliber, then the options open-up. But ya, try having a go at the water melons with that carbine...

Depends on distance as well. Bullet drop-off is way more significant on heavier bullets than lighter ones. Most likely to hit the target at POA/POI with the lighter bullet. At 100 yards in handgun calibers it doesn't make any sense to opt for heavy for caliber bullets unless you stick to 230 grain in .45ACP.

On the civil defense rounds the pedals come off and there is a little penetrator on the bottom that keeps traveling. There are some tests showing it in a gel block
I'm so glad you tested Norma's new 108 hollow point ammo, I just tested it at the range 3 days ago out of my 3.25" Bond Arms Bullpup9. Also it's crazy you bought the 50gr bullets from Liberty Ammo from Civil Defense, that's gotta be some "next level" ammo!
If you watched closely the Norma split the melon stem to stern but didn't 'explode' it like the Liberty...
The Norma is better than the Civil defense ammo in numerous gel tests. It's what I carry now since my local store can't keep Hornaday in stock. It did better than the Hornaday stuff too so it might be permanent.
We have tested Liberty civil defense on pork shoulders and various cuts of meat and it will actually shred bone, it goes in three to five inches and basically explodes if you look at the slow motion gel testing you can see what this stuff does to a block of gel... when you are potentially having to shoot someone in a self-defense situation you absolutely do not want something that overpenetrates this stuff is vicious way better than norma...

Speed kills. Liberty is a devastating round, it's also a type of fragmentation round so great for self defense and EDC. The weight is crazy, I'm a press-checker, especially when using the Liberty....feels like carrying an empty weapon. Not sure how they do against barriers, but not something you wanna get hit with. I’ve been carrying these Liberty Defense rounds in my Glock 43 for few years. My wife carries the same ones in her self defense carry gun. I like them and I got the same results shooting them through a crono. 2010 fps was my average out of a 43. I like the speed and the lack of over penetration. Good stuff man. Nice video. Thanks.

You can definitely tell they are moving fast coming outta the barrel but if nobody told me they were in there and handed it too me and I shot it ….I’d probably just assume it was just some standard loaded +P. Nothing crazy. I like them. I especially like them for winter carry to add some extra speed to defeat many layers or thick jackets if the situation presented itself.

@@bamaknifeguy I wouldn't consider that 50gr round to be ideal for winter carry. I've seen many light for caliber hollow points get clogged up with material, fail to expand, tumble over and penetrate backwards out the target. You don't get the proper energy transfer that the bullet was designed to offer and that requires proper expansion. You'll effectively be shooting a high velocity 50gr wadcutter. A better round for winter would be something like Hornady's 130gr Critical Duty, that will penetrate heavy clothing easily and have more reliable expansion and energy transfer given its ballistic tip. I like the concept of the 50gr but it's for t-shirt weather to me.
That 50 grain load is impressive. About 45 years ago I carried 88 grain HP in my Smith Model 39. Bullet performance, and powders, have improved so much!

So since i didnt see any one say it liberty is designed to split into 7 segments. This is why it just blew up the water melon and nothing came out. Ive carried these for the past 8 years and have sold thousands of rounds for them. The 223 is also a very wild round from them and also segments. The only down fall i have found in the older rounds is the primer freezes. I havent tested any new rounds to see if they do the same or not
I tried to tell folks in one of your other videos about that liberty ammo. That is my go to ammo so glad you did this video. And yes carrying a mag full of those 50gr bullets is noticeably lighter throughout the day.
......and to think I have only been loading my mag with 4 rounds to save on weight. LOL

I often shoot an 1851 Navy with an 83 grain roundball and it impresses me how much energy is dumped in a target at 1,000 feet per second. Light projectiles moving at ridiculous speeds are an excellent choice.

I've seen several try this ammo and iirc it does not do well. As paul Harrell would point out the poa/poi of using this compared to something in a more standard weight and velocity range would likely be significant, but potentially not or not in all guns. The gel tests I've seen I believe have this lacking penetration and the bullet fragments big-time. It looked pretty good here but I'm not sure about how it basically grenaded on the front. Would that be better than like a +p jhp in terms of stopping a threat? Looks gnarly.
Nope, i was wrong. Just went and rewatched Paul's video and they did quite well on the meat target! Lol. His beretta did have the poi shift down in a meaningful way but an m&p 9c he shot did not have a significant shift. Otherwise same over-velocity and damage. I'm gonna go find some gel tests.

@@phillhuddleston9445 The base passing through a L3 vest still retains enough energy to kill near the heart and double taps in the lungs would likely be deadly.
Double taps are easy and controllable in G19 and larger, a bit challenging in a G43 even with tungsten guide rod and laser flash light mounted.
In an AR pistol with a binary trigger and a 5"-8" barrel, very easy and is the best against 3A and base penetration.
It’s like you are shooting a rifle round out of a pistol. I that would be nice if you use the Carbine. Pretty sure that watermelon would be pulp!!

It would be interesting to mock up some typical house walls, both interior and exterior, and test various rounds' penetration to form an idea of what they would do after a miss or a pass-through of an assailant. I've recently gotten interested in the FN 5.7x28mm round's ballistics for a number of characteristics, many of which the 50 grain 9mm cannot compete with; but I'm inclined to think that the fast, light 9mm hollow point might be a great choice for home defense where concern about over-penetration is a legitimate consideration. People with family members occupying the same stick-framed home, or those living in similarly constructed apartment buildings, are not wrong to contemplate the implications of a bullet's flight beyond the intended target.
As a shooter, hunter and ammunition handloader from an early age, I owned and operated my own gun shop for ten years. I tend to agree with the theory that #4 buckshot is a better load to keep in one's home-defense shotgun than is 00 Buck. Significant factors in my agreement is the greater hit probability with a pattern containing nearly three times as many pellets with less chance of missed pellets passing through a wall to injure innocent family members or neighbors. Admittedly, each roughly 24 caliber pellet will not penetrate an attacker as deeply either; but even catching 1/3 of a pattern means absorbing seven simultaneous hits from 20 grain projectiles. I'd want to see more testing before adopting the 50 grain 9mm loading as an alternative or supplement to a 12 gauge shotgun for home defense, but it looks to me like the load is worth considering.

I've been carrying the Liberty civil defense 50 grain + P rounds in my carry gun for 7 years love them sheds a lot of weight off the gun but it took me 7 years to track down another box they're just so hard to find. Awesome video definitely no chance of over penetration with those liberties
You can find these rounds at cheaper than dirt ammo and a few other on sales. If your state allows
I've been recommending civil defense to people for years! the energy dump is great and less penetration than others. I love it!
I love the liberty. I found it a few years ago and have been carrying it ever since. Everything I hit it with explodes. Super light in the magazine. Hard to find sometimes though. I wouldn't carry anything else now.
How is accuracy at longer ranged shots? 20-30 yards, 40 max. Mainly for hog hunting distance is why I ask. I carry Hornady Critical but these are dang impressive, seen em before but have been skeptical as I know firsthand my ammo works for me. This might work better though

@@DB-rg2dk consistently fails to penetrate deep enough to reliably reach vital organs, and the deepest penetrating segment weighs significantly less than a .22 and is a flat disc with the diameter of a buckshot pellet.
A lot of FTF complaints so factor that into whether you want it to be your self-defense carry.
A comparison between the 50 grain and a 5.7x28 would be sweet since they are traveling about the same speed.

In putting a load into a cartridge, usually the limiting factor is pressure. And the bad thing heavy bullets have going for them is they create more pressure with an equal amount of powder than a light bullet does.
So light bullets can use that to their advantage... More powder behind a lighter bullet = A LOT more velocity. And since powder is the energy generator... You get more Kinetic Energy (but not necessarily more momentum).
50 grain bullet at 2200 fps has twice the kinetic energy of a 100 grain bullet at 1100 fps
And more velocity also helps with bullet expansion.
This liberty defense company seems to have a good handle on this 👍
Don't overlook the lower recoil too - for some reason I can't explain, a bullet with greater energy than a heavy one has half the recoil...these are like shooting just a little more than a .25 caliber pistol. The flash and bang is louder, but the impact on your hand is negligible...a perfect round for small sensitive people.
A 50gr@1,555.635 fps would equal the 100gr@1100 fps. 455.6.35 more fps = 41.4% faster. (155.635-1100)/1100 = 41.4%.
@50% faster (550 more fps) the 50gr has 25% more energy. Add an additional 550 fps to that and you get 75% more K.E.
It's exponential 1/2(mass)(velocity²).
Accuracy is a function of the square of time/ the cube of sectional density (t²/m³). It is a function of chaos from initial state to final state. A lighter faster bullet decreases the numerator to improve accuracy. A larger mass increases the denominator to improve accuracy. Mass does it better than speed, because the power of 3 > 2.
These civil defense bullets are awesome at or above the speed of sound due to the shock wave, below the shock wave speed, you want mass. Read this as don't shoot them at far away targets and expect them to do the same, because at that point you are effectively shooting bird shot out of a shot gun. Air resistance slows a lighter bullet faster and decelerates proportionally to it's velocity.
You probably have a good understanding of that but someone else who reads your comment might not and extrapolate a linear relationship. It's simple math but not necessarily common sense.
Yeah, I have them and alternate them with Federal 147 HP's in my EDC 9mm12round with my last 6 Lawman 147 TMJ. In my 8round pocket gun all civil defense. As the situation changes ... have something to fit that situation. That's the plan anyway.
Love how light they are ... a pocket 380 with 8 rounds is stupid light. I wouldn't carry a 380 if it weren't for these rounds as they just barely meet my personal requirements.

Nice to see more different kinds of ammo for the 9mm. I also have a 38 super and for me it solves the issues of knockdown power and velocity.
Velocity is higher if bullets are light. Energy formula includes both bullet weight and velocity. Low weight requires higher velocity to generate the same energy as heavier bullets at lower velocity. Velocity is important when hollow point bullets are used (expansion), FMJ would have a "piercing effect", but not transfer all energy. Any "extreme" may be counter-productive in a particular application.
Norma MHP works for me. Crazy how slow the crono showed, but expansion is crazy in jelly. The Liberty is +P so thats an important factor and I like the accurate crono speed. Damage is huge, jelly penetration needs testing on them all. Thanks for the interesting informative post.

It zips through car doors and explodes gallon water jugs in my 5" Banshee. It's a very decent performer in an AR pistol and the 5" and 8" uppers I own.

@Lurch7861 I agree with some of what you said, and agree that people are typically too cheap to pay for the important stuff once the big items (guns) have been purchased, and that people need to be pickier about their ammo. That being said, saying someone needs to shoot 100k rounds before being able to do anything is total nonsense. It’s just not true. Some people are able to shoot a case and be proficient enough to be effective, and some people sling 50k rounds a year and wouldn’t be able to perform under pressure. There’s a lot more to it than round count, and 100k (or any standard you choose before people are effective) is just patently false.
Additionally, going for headshots is stuff out of the movies. Not even the top tier military schools teach that. Most teach rounds on target are good rounds, and center mass is a great aiming point. You don’t have to have a headshot to neutralize a threat, and going for a headshot only every time is likely more dangerous than a few to the chest or pelvis.
Again, I respect your opinion, and I think we likely agree on a lot more than just what’s here in this thread, but you seem to have a few old school notions that just aren’t 100% correct.

Those averages are Remington, 1140.3, Norma 1139, Liberty 2135. Out of a pistol, those first two are dang good, Liberty at over 2100 is quite impressive. Now it's up to each of us to decide if you want velocity, or penetration. Great video.

Excellent review! I knew those 50 grn civil Defense would have substantial hydrostatic shock but that was impressive! Roy Weatheby came to those conclusions in the late forties or fifties that speed matters and I myself found that out many years ago through my own tests on different media as I was an avid deer hunter and wanted the most humane kill possible. So I knew those Civil Defense would do the damage! The question IS will they penetrate enough for a real self defense situation? I’d use them for such but maybe there are instances theyd not penetrate enough? We’ll have to see if such a self defense shooting ever occurs. But, as usual great vid Who’tee! Keep em up!

Great info love to see what happens to the watermelon with different levels of protective vests on it. I just bought some of the Norma. I'm thinking it might expand better if it went thru some heavy material
This backs up some research I saw a while back on "one stop shots", the hollow point with a lower grain was producing some incredibly high percentages. I use a "hydro-shock", hollow point with a pin in the middle, with my CZ83 (9mm short), it allows me more rounds and less kick, did some tests on a plastic two liter coke bottle filled with water, it literally obliterates the bottle, front and back, shot the sealed cap off too. I believe it has good windscreen penetration too, but have not tested that.

In regards to the Liberty self-defense round. I work private security, volunteer. We use the Liberty 50 gr. 9mm so that it stops on the intended target and does not pass through and penetrate walls. That was a good review, it proved the value of this ammo for certain situations.
Great video. I"m disappointed to see that the Norma MHP isn't even hitting advertised velocity on a 5" barrel. I got that stuff on sale and have been running it in my EDCs (along with traditional 147 gr Federal Hydra-shok), and those are 3.1" barrels. I'll have to do some chrono tests of my own now and see what's really going on with some of this discounted 9MM i've been seeing (Sierra, Norma, etc.). In the meantime I'm going back to carrying my Federal Hydra-shok.

I have been carrying Liberty civil defense since it first came out and was called Halo, we have tested on pork shoulders and it absolutely Shredded the bone, we have tested through both car doors into Targets on the opposite side of the car and it does that every time no exception... it goes in to gel three to five inches and basically explodes, if you are ever needing to use your firearm in a self-defense situation you absolutely do not want to over penetration...
Well if you pay attention in physics class you know that mass moving at a velocity will Carrie a certain amount of kinetic energy, And a mass of smaller proportion traveling at hot much higher velocities will carry much more connecticut connect to energy. 0:48
And if you think that 9mm liberty is nasty, try the 60 grain 10mm! I have some of both. I loaded my MPX SMG with them and it took a ton of weight off a loaded stick mag. Careful with those other brands like the Norma, But they're longer than other 9mm and will jam your pistol up when trying to cycle out unfired rounds or duds. Liberty is fine.
@Lurch7861 yeah I had one once. They're good suppressor hosts also because they're barrels don't tilt during firing too. Mine was an M1A1 I think model. But yeah I saw once they specced that it needed to be able to single feed ammo when locked back on an empty mag. So I tried it, and sure enough it snapped shut and ate the round properly after just tossing it loose in there lol

It's ironic that the original "Super .38" Colt round had a 130 grain bullet going 1320 fps back in 1929.
It was designed to penetrate the metal of automobile bodies and the early forms of body armor.
Sadly, ammo manufacturers have dumbed down the cartridge for some strange reason.
@Lurch7861 I have two new Colts in .38 Super that are only a few years old. Colt still makes a limited number of the "supers" each year. I may be wrong but, I heard that even Glock made a few pistols for the Italian market.
The operating pressure is around 36-38000 psi but I guess some competition shooters hot rodded the loads well past that level and blew up a few guns or had case head separations. They say you could spot a .38 Super shooter by his beard, trying to hide the powder burns from a blown case. They nick named it "Superface" 😆🤣
