  • Visiting the Tower of London on March 31, 2008 -- the Beefeaters give you a rollicking tour of the Tower, along with a history lesson you won't read about in your average issue of National Geographic.
    Our guide today is Yeoman Warder Bill Callahan, who gives the history of the Tower from men "who were there ... or who knew somebody who possibly saw" many interesting, if not humorously disgusting, things.

    I have the prviledge of having know this gentlman and in 1985 he was the best man at my wedding. by far the best man!! I am a better man for having known him.
    Even back in the early 1980s you could see that Bill was destined for something like this. It came as no surprise to me to find out he had ended up at the tower.

    Great tour. I understand all the Beefeaters are retired high ranking NCOs of the British armed forces. That accounts for their brass and confidence. They make great instructors.

      @@armaholic5949 and now it's the liability of Europe. Even the Greeks say she eats her own children. There's a restaurant in my town called The Greedy Greek which the Greeks themselves find ironic. Our Royal family is still intact, we even took adopted the Prince of Greece. We had the biggest empire and abolished slavery throughout most of the world. Not only do we have many tourists but many people also want to live here. God save the Queen 😁

    I'm English through and through and proud of it; looking back on history though I think that it’s fair to say that in the medieval ages, English civilisation left much to be desired.
    I’m not knocking anyone, just willing to accept history. As I hope with the Americans (Texans especially), Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, Welsh and Scots, I certainly do not take offence in a bit of light hearted mockery and just see an ex-soldier who knows his history and makes learning it fun.

    This is true....they are also the Queen's bodyguard on State and Ceremonial Occasions. You must have served 22 years, reached a Senior NCO and been awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. They also have powers of arrest inside the Tower.

    I remember hearing (in school probably) that there was some correlation between every piece of gold or whatever the condemned handed over, to every stroke of the sharpener the executioner would use on his blade before the chop. Ergo the more generous the payment = the cleaner and quicker your death.

    in fact, I believe the earl actually paid him more than normal and promised his servant would pay even more if Ketch didnt botch up like he had done previously. The other doucumented version of this is even more humorous as James Scott after the first strike of the ax stood up and gave ketch a dirty look!

    i may be wrong, but i believe you have to be a minimum of a Company Sergeant Major with at least 12 years of service.

    • @dafyddmanton2981
      @dafyddmanton2981 7 років тому

      Sergeant Major at the very least, whether Company, Regimental, Garrison, but not Battery, which is only (!) Warrant Officer Class 2. Minimum service is 22 years. Indeed, it is impossible to attain Warrant Officer in the RAF in 2 years. Cheers.

      Dafydd slight correction to what you wrote re Sergeant Major all Sergeant Majors are class two Warrant Officers including Battery Sergeant Majors, the only class 1 is the Regimental Sergeant Major commonly known as the RSM. Where there can be any number of Sergeant Majors in a Regiment / Battery I e. transport (MTWO)signals (SWO) etc. there's only one RSM and I used to be in the British Army for 25 yrs.
