    Sorry to hear this. I have had to curb my personality a bit at my day job precisely because "fitting in" is more important than actual work. It is also the reason why I had bought our farm 13 years ago - when I worked in television one day I came into work and 1/3rd of the staff in our building was fired (200+ employees, since we were headquarters for five different channels)... that day I knew I would have been screwed if I had the rug pulled from under me and vowed never to be in a position where I didn't see the tidal wave...

      One thing for sure is I'm going to be very careful about how I act at my next job. I learned the hard way that even seemingly harmless things can come back and bite you in the ass. It's awesome you get some income from the farm plus it seems like a lovely place to live as well. I feel more hopeful today than I did Monday because I've already lined up three meetings with recruiters and I filed for unemployment and thankfully the economy is not currently completely destroyed.

      Sorry to hear that my best advice is sharpen up that resume and get back on the horse as soon as you can. It certainly kept me sane. Good luck in getting something else and if you can and want to get out of IT I wish you the best of luck in that.

    I hope you found another job. What were you doing before the lay off ?

      I mentioned in the video I was in the IT department at the company I was laid off. I was the network admin for the "ohio region". I've actually had 3 jobs since then funnily enough. I had one job that I quit after 3 days but I knew I didn't want it before I even took it and was very upfront about that fact to the employer. The job I left the other job for lasted only around 3 months due to the head of the department being an incompetent moron. I was then out of work for about 2 months and got the job I currently have and it's a decent job and it's going well so far. I now work as a System Engineer in a NOC.

    Can’t everyone get unemployment money if they are fired/laid off?

    • @baldmetalnerd
      @baldmetalnerd  6 років тому +1

      If you're laid off yes you can collect unemployment. If you're fired "with cause" meaning you screwed up somehow and it was documented it can be tougher. Also unemployment is typically only around half of what you made working so if you have a mortgage and a bunch of other bills to pay it ain't much.

    Hi, thank you for sharing the video of a painful personal experience. I hope that you are still working at this time, earning a good living, and loving the work.I have been released from a couple of IT positions over the course of a long career, both as an employee in a cost-cutting move and as a consultant from non-renewal of a contract. The job loss stung both times, but I recovered by God's grace. At the present time, I see IT becoming much more competitive due to company offshoring efforts and H1Bs flooding into the domestic workforce. Management everywhere is definitely taking the tack of treating employees as commodities rather than investments in the enterprise. Mind you, all of this is happening when the economy is still relatively good. What happens the next time that the fit hits the shan?I switched into data analysis a few years back and will not rejoin the ranks of IT. God bless and keep us all in these times.

      Thanks for the kind words, I've had a few jobs since this happened one contract job that lasted for 3 months and my current job which I truly despise but I'm currently seeking a better job and I am grateful for the fact that I do at least have a job with income coming in. Funnily enough the job I got laid off from back in Feb they are now rehiring for it again! Ha! I applied for it as a joke. My favorite question on the application was "Why do you think you'll be more qualified for this job than other applicants?" my answer "I held this position for almost 6 years." Needless to say they haven't called me I didn't expect them to but I couldn't resist applying for the job anyway.

      hehe, I hope that the employee reviewing your application choked on his turkey sandwich when he realised that the applicant was you. Best of luck in moving up in the new career.

      I actually have to agree with Mike on this one the most logical economic system is one that is largely private. To me it's logical for the government's role in this is to regulate the private economy in ways that actually make sense and not have ridiculous regulations and taxes and I also greatly oppose crony capitalism and bail outs. I also support some things being paid for by the government with tax money such as infrastructure, social security etc. Now how much the government should provide and how are debates worth having. We are currently very far away from this ideal hence why a lot of us are fucked.

    • @baldmetalnerd
      @baldmetalnerd  8 років тому +3

      +Mike P I agree that paying for folks who don't want to work is definitely not how tax money should be used. That being said I don't think massive subsidies to corporations or endless wars are a good use of tax money either. I heard a somewhat radical idea that I actually think has some merit that for people who don't want to work they would get some sort of a "basic income" that would pay for food, shelter etc and some extra money but to get the income you would have to agree to be sterilized. Because we wouldn't want to have multiple generations of people taking without returning anything to the economy. Again I think this has some merit but there are some problems with it. The main one I can think of is if there is a huge amount of coming automation and AI that puts maybe say 70% of the workforce out of work then it would become the exception and not the rule that people work. I dunno it's just something I thought I'd bring up for conversation's sake and honestly for myself I would never take that deal because I prefer to work and earn a good living rather and have a 3 bedroom house in a rural area than just get free income and live in an apartment building and not be able to build wealth.

    • @baldmetalnerd
      @baldmetalnerd  8 років тому +3

      +Mike P I'm not suggesting it as a serious policy it's more of a thought experiment. The reality is it's a very complex social issue and I agree that people should not be allowed to be irresponsible at the expense of others.
