Public anxiety about war from the air had featured in film for some years prior to it becoming all too real in 1915. On the night of 16th May a German Zeppelin LZ38 dropped 20 or so bombs on Ramsgate in Kent, the most raided town in England during WWI. Pathé Gazette recorded the aftermath: the bombed out Bull & George hotel, policemen searching the rubble, and the clock stopped by the blast.

My home town. When I lived there Woolworths had taken the place of the hotel.
This happen on the night of 16/17 May 1915 when Zeppelin LZ38 bombed the town.
A hundred years on, it's hard for us to imagine the impact that these air raids had. No-one had ever dropped bombs on British civilians before. People were terrified because there seemed to be no defence against them.
On the night of 6/7 June 1915, a young English pilot, "Rex" Warneford, singlehandedly caused the destruction of LZ37 over Ghent. He was immediately awarded a Victoria Cross which which sent by telegram - the first time ever, and an indication of how the country felt to have the terror of the Zeppelins reduced.
