Henry Thomas (1874-1950s?[1]) was an American pre-World War II country blues singer, songster and musician. He was often billed as "Ragtime Texas".
Thomas was born in Big Sandy, Texas. He began his musical career as an itinerant songster and recorded twenty-three sides for Vocalion Records between 1927 and 1929. Thomas accompanied himself on guitar and on quills, a folk instrument fabricated from cane reeds, and would play both instruments and provide vocals for the same song. The instrument is similar in sound to the zampona, used by musicians in Peru and Bolivia.
His springy guitar-playing, probably inspired by banjo-picking styles, implies that he was used to performing for dances.[2]
His legacy has been sustained by his songs which were later covered by musicians after the folk music revival. "Fishin' Blues" was covered by Taj Mahal and The Lovin' Spoonful. "Bull Doze Blues" was recorded by Canned Heat, retitled "Goin' Up The Country". Here Thomas's melody on quills was reproduced note for note by flautist Jim Horn. "Don't Ease Me In" was covered by the Grateful Dead on their album Go to Heaven; and "Honey Won't You Allow Me One More Chance" was covered by Bob Dylan (as "Honey Just Allow Me One More Chance") on The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan. Thomas's vintage recording of "Don't Ease Me In" is included on the compilation album The Music Never Stopped: Roots of the Grateful Dead. In 1993 the band Deacon Blue released a song entitled "Last Night I Dreamed Of Henry Thomas" on their Whatever You Say, Say Nothing album. In addition, his arrangement for "Cottonfield Blues" was performed by early Delta Blues musicians Garfield Akers and Mississippi Joe Callicott in 1929.
The whereabouts of Thomas after 1929 have not been chronicled, although he was reportedly seen in Texas in the 1950s.[3] The date and circumstances of his death are uncertain. His complete Vocalion recordings were compiled on a 1990 Yazoo Records CD titled Texas Worried Blues. (Wikipedia)

Henry Thomas is overdue for rediscovery as a country bluesman, quills and all. This song is a great example.

This is a true 2:43 minute treasure. One remarkable Songster/ Bluesman . My friend Rev. Robert Jones also plays a mean set of pan pipes on the rack while playing his National steel. Love it.

Lovin' Spoonfull, Jim Kweskin's Jug Band (my personal favourite) and Taj Mahall, have all recorded well known versions of this; so it was great to finally hear the version that inspired them - big thanks for posting Charley!
For info' : I lifted the following from Wikipedia regarding 'Fishing Blues' . . . .: Quote - "Fishing Blues" is a blues song written in 1911 by Chris Smith, who is best known for "Ballin' the Jack". "Fishing Blues" was first recorded in 1928 by Henry Thomas "Ragtime Texas" on vocals and guitar with the introduction and breaks played on quills, a type of panpipe. - Unquote.

      @georgestevens1502 2 роки тому +2

Doc Watson also recorded it, and it was regular part of set at different times in his career; sans panpipe, but with finger picking covering the panpipe break

Went up on the hill about twelve o'clock.
Reached right back and got me a pole.
Went to the hardware and got me a hook.
Attached that line right on that hook.
Says you've been a-fishin' all the time.
    I'm a-goin' fishin' too.
I bet your life, your lovin'wife.
Can catch more fish than you.
Any fish bite if you've got good bait.
Here's a little somethin' I would like to relate.
Any fish bite, you've got good bait.
    I'm a-goin' a-fishin', yes, I'm a-goin' a-fishin',
    I'm a-goin' a-fishin' too.
Looked down the river about one o'clock.
    Spied this catfish swimmin' around.
I've got so hungry, didn't know what to do.
I'm gonna get me a catfish too.
Yes, you've been fishin' all the time.
    I'm a-goin' a-fishin' too.
I bet your life your lovin' wife.
    Catch more fish than you.
Any fish bite, got good bait.
Here's a little somethin' I would like to relate.
Any fish bite, you've got good bait.
    I'm a-goin' a-fishin', yes, I'm goin' a-fishin',
    I'm a-goin' a-fishin' too.
Put on your skillet, don't never mind your lead.
Mama gonna cook 'em with the short'nin' bread.
Says you been fishin' all the time.
    I'm a-goin a-fishin' too.
I bet your life, your lovin' wife.
Can catch more fish than you.
Any fish bite, if you've got good bait.
Here's a little somethin' I would like to relate.
Any fish bite, you've got good bait.
    I'm a-goin' a-fishin', yes, I'm goin' a-fishin',

Pulled up my hemp, twisted a line,
gone to the woods & cut me a pole.
I'm goin down to the fishin hole,
may catch nothin but I'm feeling fine!

Wikipedia says it was written by Chris Smith in 1911. The Jim Kwekin band credits Henry Thomas - sort of (!) in the intro' of their 2015 version.

yeah a bit sad, the Lovin Spoonful credit it as a traditional, addapted by Sebastian. On Sebastians Cheapo Cheapo Real Live album it’s even credited to Sebastian and Stampfel. But at least on their third akbum “Hums” they did a real nice and funny song named “Henry Thomas”!

I got no time at all for ppl that think they gotta hate black folks when they contributed a major part to what they call " American culture" (no pun meant)- brainless... spare me the word... also worth listening to is Taja Mahals early version on a double vinyl (electric rock, folk rock AND folk blues)... regards from a european listener that knows this music from his early teens on....
