    Can’t thank you enough for this video! I’ve been running a Minolta Scan Multi Pro on SCSI for a couple of years now since the FW connection died, but about a month ago, even SCSI scans started mysteriously hanging midway. Followed your advice and sent my board to the Gleb Shtengel at the USA link in your description to have the 2 chips replaced. About 2 weeks later, I’m back in business and it’s running like a dream again! 🙌

    Great video, thank you! I bought one of these scanners new in 2002 or 2003, but ten years later it started to develop slightly different problems. Essentially, it would sometimes not start up properly the first time when turned on, but always started at the second try. I listed it, with a description of the problem, and it sold for a very low price. A pity, as it is an excellent scanner. Perhaps it just needed cleaning/lubrication of moving parts in the film carrier mechanism.
    I always used the original Minolta software, although I do have VueScan and use it with a different scanner, where it does an excellent job.
    Your scanner should now work well for another 20 years!

    I had been fighting the death of equipment for a few years, chasing dying Apple computers to run SCSI. Last summer I ran out of working parts (from 5 G4 machines), since Apple insisted on even making the power supply incompatible between year generations of the same model machine, and built a Windows 7 machine to run SCSI. I have an Imacon Flextight Precision II and a Microtek Artixscan (that can scan 8x10" negs). The Microtek then stopped working, it would connect, but the images would have weird inconsistencies in brightness. After taking the thing apart and running new cables for powering the cold cathode tubes, I realised that the lower (transparency) tube was starting to fail. Amazingly I was able to pull one from an old laptop, and got that machine running again.
    So if you end up having computer issues, I would recommend making a Win7 machine. It works quite well, and there are many more drivers available for odd SCSI cards. Worth noting that you do have to use Edge or Firefox, as Chrome is not very kind to older operating systems, and thinks the internet is just broken.
    It is such a pain that we have to do this, but sadly there are no better alternatives, without spending money that I do not have, for something that does not make me money.

    Graeme repaired my Coolscan 5000 which did not recognise the film strip feeder and also had a faulty USB port. He did a brilliant job and brought back to life a machine I was fearing had become a door stopper. I highly recommend Lincolnscan.

    Fantastic detective work! I haven't used a film scanner since I was in college where we were lucky enough to have access to Coolscan 9000s and a couple of Flextights. Honestly the cost and age of film decent film scanners has been a barrier but I'm glad to see yourself and the communbity are fighting to keep them alive in an age where there isn't really a lot of other options. I love this old hardware but I expect to go the DSLR and lightbox route eventually myslf. As a purist is this something that you have played with?

    Very interesting repair👍
    I have a 35mm speed scan which I hope to get going. The USB cable might be needed if my scsi board won’t work.
    I will need Vuescan of course. 👍

      Sadly it is recognised on the device manager but cannot connect to it, I have tried View Scan and also Damage software and the OEM software comes back with Error 04. I'm really unsure of using Scsi and have tried a Scsi to USB adapter but still can't get it to be recognised as a scanner.

    I have a Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 (Version 1) which is exhibiting the same behaviour as your Scan Multi PRO was before replacement of the two chips. My scanner also has a Firewire port which I have never used but I assume that it most likely has the two chips you reference on the main board. I will now remove the cover to see if that is the case and then consider having the same repair done on it as it was an excellent scanner when it was working. Thank you for a very informative and well researched video.

    • @rayallen8134
      @rayallen8134 2 роки тому

      When I examined the board in the above scanner it did not have the same chips as your scanner. Further research revealed that it had a defective capacitor. Some initial cleaning of the cap got my scanner going again mechanically but the scan results are not good. I am hoping that will be corrected by a replacement cap. Your video helped me to pursue the issue to a hopefully good solution. Thanks again.

    Well done! I've got a Nikonscan and this could happen to me. Apparently, I have heard that plugging in firewire / cables into the scanner while the computer is still on can cause damage to those chips to occur. But that might be a myth. Nonetheless, I never plug in a 'live' firewire or usb cable into my scanners.

    Fantastic detective work! I have a Multi Pro with flaky almost broken Firewire but SCSI works OK which suggests only the TI chip is dying.

    • @jarkkolavinen6391
      @jarkkolavinen6391 2 роки тому

      The PCB area below TI TSB41AB3 is not soldered so the PCB is not used as a heat sink. The chip could be removed without excessive heat using Chipquik. I wonder if the chip gets warm and a radiator heatsink would avoid premature aging?

    • @baylissprojects
      @baylissprojects  2 роки тому

      @@jarkkolavinen6391 Thank-you for watching! That's interesting, maybe you could give an update when you replace the TI chip and tell us if that alone fixes the issue.
      I wish I knew what causes these chips to fail - I'd like to get as much use out of my newly replaced chips as I can. Perhaps it is worth sticking something like this on the chips just in case overheating is the problem: www.amazon.co.uk/Heatsink-14x14x6mm-Aluminum-Adhesive-Computer/dp/B08F24XZ46/ref=asc_df_B08F24XZ46/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=501043374885&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12435084272575372172&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045945&hvtargid=pla-1130307710054&psc=1

    Hi there! First of all all my congratulations for being a person able to stay calm, cool and not in a hurry during the whole video, I really enjoyed the pace of this :D I also own a Multipro (and a 5400II). Thankfully I never had connection issues (at some point when I was still using a Windows laptop I even managed to use it with both the Minolta Dimage original software or Vuescan, without any problems!). But lately when scanning 6x6 I get quite strong banding all over the photos.. I was wondering if you ever encountered the same problem...? They look like couple of large parallel bands of reddish colour (or just lighter tone in B&W), subtly visible but annoyingly there! I have also being spending endless evenings trying to read about online but still couldn't find a true reason why this is happening. And it happens also with the 5400II, sigh....!

      Your CCFL light bulb is probably on its last leg on the Scan Pro. Good news is that you can replace it.
      As for the Minolta 5400 II, its 3 led are probably aging differently. Banding seems to be quite common with them unfortunately.

    I have a Minolta Multi Pro. One year ago there was a changed lamp and a service was done. When I connect the scanner using a FireWire PC and VueScan loads it. But the LED still flashes and VueScan report: Insert the carrier or remove the carrier. When I select calibration, it gets stuck. Don't know what it is?
