    Interesting timeline.
    I'll add that Amtrak did retain a bunch of F40s in revenue service into the 2000s. 231, 340, 353, 369, 381, 383, 399, 400 and 415 were some of the ones that could be seen on the West Coast in 2000-2001. Others were in the Midwest and Northeast.

    Being a 54 year old fart... This was MY era!! As a boy, my Dad's friend used to take me to Colton, CA, where he had a friend who used to let me go UP INTO Colton Tower!! :-D Saw the best of Espee rolling through the double diamond - including hydraulics, U50s, and DD35Bs.
    From the other direction was ATSF and UP, with Centennials and freshly repainted Blue Bonnets from the San Bernardino Shops! It was the time of my life. Got LOTS of pictures...
    You've got quite a collection.

    Despite buying a new fleet of new locomotives the MBTA still uses a bunch of F40PH. Rolling nostalgia lol. Keep up the great work guys.

    Yes BNSF still uses old GP30's but they've been upgraded. I recently saw one working my Near by BNSF yard.

      Well then I'll have to leave more. I'm almost finished with your 101 series and I appreciate the detail, especially the basic information since that's been so hard to come by. I'm considering doing an N Scale layout and this has been extremely helpful.

      MR101 is ongoing with one episode each month, so stay tuned. We are also making some preparations for a layout build series. There is no expected date for this project to commence yet, but we expect it should be very helpful to people who are considering the same.

    Erie Lackawanna SDP45 was used for a larger fuel tank to run from Chicago to New York without having to refuel. Great series keep up the good job. Looking for more. Thank you.

    Honestly I think these and the train car videos would do a great guide for railfans too. Also, maybe you could do a video about the class 1 and 2 railroads out there, the history on them, location, what's needed to model them, etc. An episode on trackside equipment would be cool too.

    I love those old long snoot Southern Pacific and Santa Fe units running in the Tehachapi area back in the 70s 80s and 90s. I've seen some old videos of them and they're so fun to watch!

    Awesome video (and series) as usual! Probably my favorite engine talked about here is the GP-30. I was lucky enough to get a cab ride on one of the two that are in operation at the scenic railroad in my area (Western Maryland). I've also noticed within the last few weeks that CSX around where I live (close to the Cumberland, MD yard) have been running GP-30's and some other older stuff out on the line. It's really cool to see the old timers out running with the GEVO's!

    CSX still has a GP30 with no engine in the long hood. They're called Road Slugs now. Normally run behind the "parent unit".

    Those Geeps sure are meant to last! Indiana Northeastern uses them exclusively and have several types ranging from the GP7 to the GP30.

    EXCELLENT! I am a rank beginner in spotting trains and the model train world, I will re watch this several times. Thanks also for your "101" series as well, it is great for us beginners to get started on the right foot and make, hopefully, minimal mistakes in setting things up!

    Well done guys, side note, BNSF uses the GP30's as remote controlled yard units in Pueblo. I see them running in consists with other gen 2 diesels. They have some weird desingnation of GP30-3x or something like that. Thanks great series.

    Hey thanks for taking me back. I used to go to that A&W too as a kid and there was one in the middle of the 99 can't remember were but it was between Turlock and Fresno. Great show

    More power to you, Dan! I'm like you. I love and model both ATSF & SP railroads, but I prefer the ATSF a little more. You provided a great primer on North American diesel-powered prime movers made from 1960 to 1980. I'm modeling the 1960s in N scale with both of these great railroads, so this episode rolled right up my alley. Thanks!

    Great video, just one problem. The GP15AC and the MP15AC were not AC traction locomotives. EMD's first AC traction locomotives were two F69PH-AC built for Amtrak. The first AC traction freight locomotive was the SD60MAC, three built and tested on the BN. The AC on the GP15AC and MP15AC stood for them having an AC alternator and not a generator. When the 40 series came out in 1965, all the turbo-charged locomotive had AC alternators. In 1969, EMD started offering the AC alternator in their other road locomotives (i.e. SD38AC and GP38AC). When the dash-2 line came out all their locomotives had AC alternators except the switchers. I hope this helps.

    close to where I live on the fort Scott sub and emporia sub in kansas, BNSF actually has some GP30's painted into the H3 scheme and they are used for local hauls.

    BNSF still routinely assigns a GP30 to yard/local service in Centralia, WA. At least half of all GP30s ever produced are still in active service. Most are now in yard/local and branchline service.

    About the GP50s, 60s, B40-8s, and so on. The Santa Fe, for its part, preferred the four axle version of the locomotive for high priority intermodal freight for the same reason BNSF preferred first DC traction and now A-1-A traction. Intermodal requires high horsepower for speed, but it does not require particularly high tractive effort for getting a train started. Because of the high horsepower needs, unit reduction was not, and is not an option as it is for drag freights, which require high tractive effort to get moving, but do not need as much horsepower to keep them moving down the line.
    To reduce costs, Santa Fe opted for four axle units, which had two fewer traction motors to maintain per unit. This solution worked until the GP60M and B40-8W, which pushed four axle locomotive weight to its limits. Crews complained that these units rode extremely rough, so all units thereafter were 6 axle. Because DC traction was cheaper than AC traction (and because starting tractive effort, again, wasn't an issue for high speed intermodal) Santa Fe and later BNSF continued to order DC units for intermodal and AC units for heavy freights until the AC44C4 from GE eliminated the DC cost advantage.

    In the switcher class, the SW-9 and SW1500 had a cow and calf configuration that used the MU capability for additional muscle in hump yard use. I believe these were modeled by Athern. A slug (tractive effort booster unit) was a four axle traction motor only chassis with ballast (sometimes aux fuel) in consist with the more powerful yard engines (GP38) rather than the self powered calf. The prototypes were built by GM & GE. I have not seen a slug in a model form unless it was custom built much the same as some roads would create them from depowering retired locos. Not sure of the era these originated('70s I think) but have seen them on some layouts. Keep your hand on the throttle.

      I have seen photos of slugs and kitbashed models of the same as well. It is rather surprising that a major manufacturer has not released a model of a slug, as they were not entirely uncommon.

    The simple spotting feature on a GP-20 low hood is it's the only (so far) EMD with a slanted nose top. It's also the nose of the 2-unit production run RS-1325.

    Oh by the way dan, you missed a third six axle passenger u boat; u34ch. These locomotives were the first head end power equipped locomotives, exclusive to the Erie Lackawanna railroad, and ran commuter trains in northern New Jersey. Thirty three were built between 1970-1978, the last being a rebuilt u30c freight locomotive. They were retired in 1994, and most either went to Mexico, or were cut up for scrap. The united railway historical society of New Jersey has just one in preservation, 3372. There are hopes to restore her to operational condition.

    Actually ALCO subsidiary Montreal Locomotive Works was in business till parent Studebaker-Worthington sold most of the shares to Bombardier. the MLW named was drooped in favor of Bombardier. Bombardier (BBD) carried on building the former MLW line with a few changes until BBD exited the locomotive business in 1985.

    Also the Illinois Central railroads SD40 A's were built on sdp45 frames to give the Illinois Central SD40 s with a 5000 gallon fuel capacity they had the standard car body of the SD40 with the same 645 series engine that was in the standard SD40 I see bought a total of 18 of them between 1969 and 1970 if you look at them they had the forerunners of some spotting different since it would wind up being in the dash 2 line they had the water eye sight glass

    Sweet! We use a GP40 here at work 4602 TVAX. It will pull 10 big coal cars. We have a small center cab switcher I need to learn more about that they call Dinky and it will pull two coal cars. Look at my profile picture to see the GP40.

    Wow, I'm really impressed with your breadth and depth of knowledge of this subject, an abstruse one to me... But I loved your coverage of steam, very detailed and thorough, and I find myself up way past bedtime, learning about diesels! :) So thank you. (But i gotta say, these diesels don't have the romance of steam, they all look like almost the same few models...) How can you possibly remember them all?

    You forgot to mention that the SW1500 and the MP15 series were end of the switchers. Also, the EMD SD50 and GP50 series nearly doomed EMD and allowed GE to take over the #1 spot.

    I'm familiar with the gp30, there's one in Nevada, a Union Pacific diesel. It is numbered 844. I'm sure you know that to prevent conflict with diesel 844, steam engine 844 was renumbered 8444, until 1989. Now there's an sd70 numbered 8444.

    Suggestion for Model Railroading 101: I might not be the first person new to MR who bought locomotives (or other vehicles?) that had to be returned because of constant derailing. Would it be helpful to have an episode on what to look for when buying and some examples of "safe" buys. My failures were Big Boy, and PRR T-1 and Norfolk & Western "611." It was very disappointing since the second and third ones were locos I "really" wanted for personal reasons.

    In talking about all of these prototype engines, it would have been nice for you to throw in which company made the model and possibly a price range if they are still in production. There is so much info my head is spinning.

      This episode wasn't about the models per se. It was about the prototypes that the models are replicas of. The models were props to give viewers an idea what the prototypes look like.

    Suggestion.. can you do a video for beginner layout building? More specifically the layout itself, and how to build it with an eye for the future. The reason I ask, I'm thinking of building my first layout, but I want to future proof it so I can eventually do auto-reversing, blocking, powered switches, signals, etcetera. I abhore wasting my time re-doing something, so if I can build it with future electronics in mind, that's what I want to do.

    Been watching the videos thus far and they are great. Just one point: can you lower the music on the intro. The intro is super loud and then you transition to converse level sound. Its jarring to me. Keep up the great work!

      Well technically without the diesel generating the electricity they would never move, so that makes them diesel first and electric second. That's why they're called "Diesel-electric" :D
