Riding a bicycle is a great way to exercise. Ebikes are bringing many older adults back to cycling.
Cities need to do more to encourage people to ride bicycles. Safe protected bike lanes and trails are needed so adults and children can ride safely. Speak up for bicycles in your community. Bicycles make life and cities better. Ask your local transportation planner and elected officials to support more protected bike lanes and trails. Children should be riding a bicycle to school and not be driven in a minivan. Be healthier and happier. Ride a bicycle regularly.
I purchase my Five-star to beat the tariff, but these tariffs have been pending for years. I agree with you most companies will pass along the cost because most are just resellers and have zero desire to build their own bikes.
Russ I have had the barcode experience with Fedex also! I kind of believe it is kind of like the phone hold situation, it’s automatic. You can’t call anybody commercially now without being automatically put on hold so they can finish their donuts!
Clarification: prices shouldn't go up 25%. The tariff is s tax, which is now 25% ... It was 7.5% ... So the tax went from 7.5 to 25 ... So $175 on $1k ... Anything more is opportunistic behavior by sellers.
Great content Russ. Thanks. Keep it up.
Yes, I just made a video today about this very thing! It can’t be 25% to the consumer.
We’ll see on the costs. There’s a good bit of margin in these things, and the prices will go up if the market bears it. People should not desperation buy, that’ll definitely raise prices. As to the timing, the 25% was supposed to have applied from 2018. What I’m more uncomfortable with is they have held off for 6 years on a clear law the Congress passed. Maybe the tariffs will help domestic production increase, maybe it won’t, but that’s up to Congress to either repeal it if we don’t like it or keep it in effect if we do, not on the Trade Reps (since more than 1 has been involved at this point) to simply fail to implement the law for 6 years.
Raising excellent points. Thank you.
I'm still a buyer at 25% more. I have 2 now, and I might get one more. I'm 66. Hopefully, they last 5 years, that's my dream anyways.
@@Mark-qv4bn Good for you Mark. I’m 68 and ordered the new Wired Cruiser as my second bike. Prices are still competitively good even with the 25% tariff 👍🏻
From what I can tell, automobile manufacturers mostly think of e-bikes as a threat, though a few put out concepts or small lots of e-bikes under their brand as marketing exercises.
So, I am not surprised these tariffs, meant to protect the US-based auto brands, are being put on e-bikes and ebike components.
Now, I wouldn’t mind these tariffs if the fees collected were put towards improving bike infrastructure, domestic production capability of bikes, e-bikes or components, ebike recycling or federal ebike purchase and use incentives, but I doubt they will.
Yes your right just bought a awd 20x4 done with 4 ebikes😅.At 64YRS old man widower I know alittle 😊
I'm not going to worry too much about a price increase. There is so much competition in the ebike market, bikes go up and down all the time. May have to just look harder for a deal. Prime days, black Friday and such. Defiantly NOT going to panic buy. I am more worried about the cicada's than the prices. LOL.
Hey Russ, if there are folks out there on the fence on an ebike, now is the time to buy. Ebike companies are in a wait and see with most eventually (if not now) increasing their prices. Hoping Congress will repeal or delay again this 25% Tarif. Letting Mrs.Right keep ALL of her ebikes would be a wise choice! I think ebikes shipped with bad controllers are more common unfortunately and Rad handled it well. Glad Mrs.Right came to your rescue again!🤣
Not sure its going to work that way. Trump I believe delayed the initial tariff by EO, now Biden appears to go through with it. Confess is out of this one unless they take action directly
I bought a Velotric Discover 2 a couple weeks ago as my first e-bike. They have had an extra battery for $100 off ($400 instead of $500), so thinking I would get one sooner or later, I pulled the trigger this morning, to make sure the price doesn’t jump back due to the tariffs. Having an extra battery, to me, will be a major convenience. It also means that I won’t be so anxious to get back home when the battery gets below 50%, so it will allow me to go to places I simply couldn’t with one battery.
Anyway, in your conundrum about expressing a preference between two bikes, I think “influencers”, such as yourself, that get e-bikes sent to them simply for doing a review is an issue in itself. No matter how objective you think you are, you can’t help but recognize that giving bad reviews might lead to less free e-bikes being shipped to you. For substandard makers, that’s not an issue, since you probably don’t want more junk from them. However, you all are the only ones who have the experience of actually riding a large number of e-bikes and thus being able to compare them.
To be fair, I agree that in many cases, you like and dislike things on both bikes, so there is not a clear winner in your mind. However, just as you did in your reply, you can point out the differences where there is a clear winner (such as throttle initiation and suspension). Those are the types of observations we need, combined with a perspective on which purposes each bike might be better (e.g., If you go on unpaved surfaces a lot, perhaps the suspension would be more important vs city driving, where it’s important to be prompt and precise as to the power delivery).
I appreciate your conversational style, and don’t mean to dismiss e-bike reviews with free merchandise completely, but as a conscientious consumer, we should all watch many reviews of the bikes you are interested in, realizing that these are, in some real ways, paid advertisements, with a twist. As you watch enough of these, you develop a sense for if the bike is right for you.
Sorry for the long post, but one quick story in this regard. Another bike review channel, that prides themselves on their scientific approach to the reviews, does one part where they ride up the same hill on throttle only, then on the highest power assist level. Well, for the review on the bike I bought, which has 5 power assist levels, but three different modes (eco, trail, and boost), they did the power assist in trail mode rather than the more powerful boost mode, when every other bike they compare it with is getting the top setting for power assist. Needless to say, it performed poorly, being governed like that. I saw some comments on that video that said they wouldn’t buy the bike because of the poor hill climbing test. That’s an example of being careful to evaluate things for yourself.
Thanks.
On the bike shop, it seems like they should be set up to jack up the back wheel and stick the throttle on and let it run while they work on other things.
Yeah, that would have been better!
Really enjoy your videos Russ, as I too bought an e bike due to mobility issues with, like you, arthritic knees. Unfortunately being in the UK we are very restricted, plus don't have the lovely cycle paths that you seem to have....This makes for a very envious view, but love the format of chatting whilst riding, just one thing, when are we going to get to see more of Mrs Right than just a distant figure cycling....lol
Thanks for watching!
I can answer the question: Aventon Aventure! Oh that wasn't even part of the question? I'm probably bias in believing all answers leads to Aventon. :)
I think they're great ebikes.
Velotric just raised the price of their new fold bike by $200. Kingbull is still holding their foldbike at $999 but who knows for how long?
Not very long.
I bought 2 ebikes, I'm good. Im over 66.
I have e two e-bikes
I just put them on credit card’s honestly
I’m about 4000 dollars invested in e-bikes total wheel rebuilds are not cheap since when you hit bumps cracks on the road train tracks…speed bumps anything my back wheel comes off the ground and slams back down on the pavement…you will need a custom hand built wheel someday unless you ride 3 times a year at the most lol
Transportation has never been cheap…not even a pair of rollerblades aren’t cheap lol
Total excuse. It's probably because that's what the option is given to them in a delay that's input into the computer. When they go to give a reason that's what the computer spits out because that's what's loaded into it. Take Amazon on a refund. If they are offering you a refund and they click on refund only 3 options come up. Those options are put into place for the sales associate to offer you. They can't offer you anything else but what's on the screen. So I'm guessing that's what FedEx does too. Comes up can't read bar code that way you can't call and complain because they'll say it's outa their hands driver couldn't read it but it's total bullshit.
My legs are almost healed enough to go for a ride, not on dirt roads though. I'll have to stick to paved roads for the next few weeks. Oh great, raise the price of my ebike battery from $320 to $450, or more. I'm thinking, when my battery expires, maybe sooner, I'll be moving on to a motorcycle, or scooter. Double the price of ebikes, and they are no longer a viable purchase. JB just killed the industry, and for me, my mobility.
Wonder if the impact is different for the Wisconsin made and built there ebikes -- guessing where the battery comes from will be the important part.
Batteries for sure if they come from China. Parts for USA bikes may be impacted as well if they come from China.
Had a delivery date from FedEx got looked forward to receiving my bike but at last minute I no longer had a delivery date.
Also had the label exception with
My order
Very typical of FedEx. It will get there eventually but it ties people up waiting around for their packages.
Wait time on Amazon ordered ebike was 8-9 days. Used to be 4 days.
Are one of the bikes your getting later this week will be the WIRED freedom?
Not that I know of. I have not heard back from Wired since their initial offer to send one.
And they are giving me the Wired Cruiser, the step thru version, not the Freedom which is the step over version.
@@RussIsRight ok will it be a review model that their sending you?
It is a production model given to me to review.
@@RussIsRight I see well lucky for me I’ve already purchased this thing a few weeks ago before all the prices were starting to rise. I wanted to get the cruiser but I didn’t want to wait till late July to receive it so I went with the regular model so I can get it as soon as possible
Noticed here in the UK Conversion kits are on the rise.
I have seen several conversion brands coming from the UK.
It's 6/10/24 at 10:45am MST. There is nothing on the Aventon site about tariffs or a price increase.
In fact, they're still giving away a free battery with certain purchases.
They must have removed that statement. I saw it last week saying that on Monday, June 10, they would raise their prices. Perhaps it is raised and then just removed as to why?
@@RussIsRight - I didn't doubt you at all.
If memory serves, they had the Aventure.2 down to $1799...now it's back to $1999.
Sale price off? Higher tariff-in-mind pricing? Your guess is probably better than mine.
Could be. I don't really follow their website much, so I don't know what their prices were. But I was pointed to it by another article and when I looked, they did mention in on the homepage that the prices were going up June 10 due to the tariffs.
@@RussIsRight - I was on it frequently while choosing between that and the Aima Big Sur...which is what we chose.
You might want to check into this company and their bikes. They're starting to make a big splash here in the states with a dealer network. Here's a Google blurb:
"AIMA: 25-years industry benchmark and top e-mobility brand In 2022, AIMA achieved a total revenue of ¥20.802 billion, not only entering the top 500 private manufacturing enterprises in China but also solidifying its position as a leader in the electric mobility industry.
Hi Russ - I have been looking to purchase for the last two weeks. Having an issue deciding which one. Some have already raised prices as you mention. I have a question a little off this topic. I just watched your review of Engwe. Their specks say for the stepthru e26, 5’6” is the minimum. I know they sent you a step over….can you comment if you think this is accurate? I am 5’3” and very hesitant to take a chance. I have seen other reviews and heard people say this is a “big” bike. Thanks for your thoughts!
I have not seen the step thru version, but I would imagine it is physically as big as the step over version except without the extra top tube. Overall, I would say it is a very big bike and I have my doubts that you would find it suitable for 5'3". It's likely too big.
How many bikes do you have? Be nice to do some videos and have a company. Send you three bikes.
Currently around 19 after selling half of the bunch.
@@RussIsRight do you have the Aventon Aventure2?
@clevelanddan6049 I do not.
@@RussIsRight that’s the bike I have my eye on. It’d be my first e-bike that I’ve bought and would also get one for my wife. My knees aren’t getting any better either… lol and I like going on long rides
