    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 роки тому +2

      GM has discontinued these parts since this video was made. So you’ll have to set a search alert until one pops up. Be sure you use the links in the description (there are two) as one searches for the previously discontinued numbers. Any will work for this mod so you could put a watch on both sets of numbers.

      This PDIM with Bluetooth is originally a Camaro option, just happens to be compatible with the Cruze also. So while I know it's compatible with some Camaros - I can't tell you how to install it or what the pre-reqs are for compatibility because I've not worked on a Camaro before.

    Excellent video! Is sound volume affected with this upgrade? For example, hearing the radio on full volume is quite loud, but when I use an aux for my own music the volume doesn't get as loud.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 роки тому

      I find the volume with the Bluetooth PDIM comparable to the AUX version, but it's possible it varies depending on the PDIM part number used. Just a guess though.

      Likely all victims of the great Covid pandemic of 2020 parts shortage and later cancellation. Sadly, these parts are never coming back, as the chips needed to make them were needed elsewhere for newer models. I've also ran into parts cancellations for vehicles as recent as 2019 and 2020 model years as well.

    • @DrShock

      If you do _not_ have the Bluetooth upgrade this video goes over, then you will just have the standard USB connectivity package to the radio which is geared towards either Apple iPod music, or standard MP3 player storage. An Android device fall into the latter category, so are viewed as storage devices. If you have stored music on the Samsung in a format the radio recognizes it should play it, if not you get _no data found_ as the obvious message. If you get this message and do have music, it's some sort of compatibility issue that _might_ be addressed by having the most recent Android level, but not always.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 роки тому

      You would be missing the wiring harness for a PDIM, and you may not have a radio with the support built in for one. If I had your situation, I'd visit a salvage yard and attempt to pull the option KTA parts you're missing (harness from the center console to the PDIM, and from the PDIM to the radio). I'd also bring along the radio from the donor vehicle, just in case yours doesn't have the support (the base radio has two versions and the non-KTA option one is reported to not won't work with the PDIM option).

    • @DrShock

      The Bluetooth radio this upgrade adds for streaming behaves the same as aux-in music controls wise since the PDIM handles both inputs. The other Bluetooth radio is the one that handles hands free calling for your smartphone.

    Does this work with a 2016 cruze limited 1LT?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  Рік тому

      First, let me point out these Bluetooth modules have been discontinued by GM for a few years now. There are search links in the description by GM part number, but you may have to hunt for them. The 2016 Cruze Limited is _supposed_ to be the same as the 2015 but there were some differences here and there. You would have to open up the center console to see if you see the same PDIM there as shown in the vid, and you would need to see that the radio responds to the same firmware version readout as well.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 роки тому

      I provide some of the other older part numbers in the video description. But GM only offers one PDIM, with all the other parts being superseded and discontinued versions. At the time of the video, the one I showed with a yellow label was the latest in production PDIM. Alot of the earlier, now discontinued, parts had a blue label for example.
      IMO the current in-production GM PDIM is the one to get, unless you're trying to save some money. The primary difference is that the latest part number is going to have the highest device compatibility, as it has the newest firmware addressing both bugs and newer Bluetooth versions.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 роки тому

      I can't speak about these PDIMs with experience on other vehicle models. But for the Chevrolet Cruze first generation I've done several of these PDIM upgrades, and there's no programming required as long as you have the pre-requisite RPO KTA option parts I go over _in detail_ within the video. I own all the GM dealer programming tools (see my other videos on the Tech2 and MDI) so I'm quite familiar with when programming is and isn't needed. Now if your 1st gen Cruze doesn't have these pre-reqs I go over, well then yeah you may be facing a factory radio upgrade and possible programming to bring it up to par. But then this video isn't about that as it would be much more involved.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 роки тому +1

      There is some overlap, but not year to year parity. While I've only done this mod on Cruzes, and seen it installed in Camaros, I have came across forum articles on doing this in the Equinox also. I did a quick google to refresh what I've read, and you'll find some posts that indicate this was only possible thru 2011 as the electronics changed in 2012 for the Equinox. Whether that's true, or those posters had nav radios instead of base ones who knows. If this were me, I'd read up on these forum posts for those experiences, and then do the disassembly on the 2010 to see if it had the base PDIM installed there before trying to do the Bluetooth PDIM upgrade. All the same pre-req checks I show for the Cruze would still apply.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  2 роки тому

      It's possible that it's software related, like the iOS update introducing some incompatibility. If you have the Bluetooth PDIM upgrade that this video goes over, try forgetting the iPhone in the radio menu and relearning it. If you have the base PDIM (aux and USB only) then I'd try the following:
      - Pull the radio fuse to completely power down the entertainment modules. Then reinstall and start the car, then shut off the car. This is similar to restarting the iPhone, retry both USB and aux.
      - Restart the iPhone (power off/on) and reconnect over aux instead of USB (this would confirm some functionality). If aux also doesn't work then very likely the PDIM has a problem. If aux works but not USB, then it's more likely an issue with either the USB jack or its wiring harness installed in the Cruze imo. For the latter you could try some of that canned air for removing keyboard dust directed inside the USB jack.

    I have a 2014 it has the KTA and the usb/aux ports but they don't work when I plug something in to them. Only the cd player comes on when I press the configure button so I can't check the last part. I replaced the fuse and even got new usb/aux ports but it still didn't work. Have you come upon this problem before?

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 роки тому

      No, I have not but it could be that the original white label PDIM has failed if the ports are there but inoperative. I'd disassemble enough of the trim to confirm the white label PDIM is installed before buying the yellow label (or older blue label) replacement to add the Bluetooth.
      Unless you're the original owner since new, you have to open it up anyway to eliminate the possibility of previous owners having damaged the KTA wiring harness during some aftermarket product installation as well. It can also be that a previous owner replaced the radio so you'll want to be sure there's an actual PDIM harness connection there.

    Sometimes when I plug in my phone to aux, I get an error message saying “This accessory is not supported by iPhone” on the car. If I change the PDIM, would that solve if install the new PDIM for Bluetooth functionality? It’s the reason why I’m doing the upgrade.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 роки тому

      I'm not aware of any USB improvements in the Bluetooth PDIM. The feature this brings is the same as you have now for USB and AUX, and just adds a Bluetooth A2DP streaming profile. These kinds of device errors _could_ be caused by not using genuine Apple lightning cables. It can also be caused by a very old level of Apple iOS. But it's more likely just GM doesn't invest in trying to keep up with Apple's latest iOS firmware updates. This GM service bulletin link covers the 2011-2013 Cruze, and explains that they really only claim to support an iPod level of functionality with USB, even with iPhone - static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10062525-7690.pdf

    • @DrShock

      No programming required. But you do have to meet all the pre-reqs I go over in the video. This wasn't something originally available on the Cruze in the USA, but rather only the Camaro. But since GM at one point planned to offer it, it's something that works. But only if you have the pre-req wiring and radio that comes with option KTA.

      Yeah the Cruze never actually came with this option in the USA. Only the Camaro. So we're doing a mod to a Cruze with a Camaro part in this video (though GM discontinued the part during the pandemic). So if you can find one on a Camaro of the same year range as the Cruze, and it's one of the part numbers listed in the video description, it _should_ work. • @DrShock

      KTF is unrelated to the radio area. Having aux and not USB would be just the base radio, so it's unlikely the radio head unit even has the PDIM harness connector on back (though there were two radios one with and one without it so you might want to pull it and see). Anything is possible with a trip to a salvage yard and a suitable donor car, but it would be more of a project than this video covers.

      The holding of the menu down is just to confirm that you have a functioning PDIM already (the white label base type). You need to use the USB input when you do this, not AUX. Outside the US that sticker might be located in the trunk. It's there somewhere, all GM vehicles have it so the dealers can confirm how the vehicle was built for options not associated with the VIN itself. If the sticker is missing, and all of the other checks check out, I would go ahead and do the disassembly and eyeball the base PDIM is there. If you find it, then order the upgrade. The reason for caution on this is you usually cannot get a refund on GM parts, and you never know what sort of aftermarket or home grown mods someone may have done before you so you want to make sure it's a legit KTA setup first.

    • @DrShock
      @DrShock  4 роки тому

      Presuming it's the factory radio that came with the car (not all GM radios will work with a PDIM) then you should be able to have the radio communicate with the PDIM and pull the HW/SW version info like I show in the vid. If that's not working then I'd suspect the wiring harness between the radio and the PDIM or the radio itself. Since you already tried a different PDIM I'd rule that out for now. And the USB cable wouldn't have anything to do with not pulling firmware version info. So I'd re-pull the trim and focus on the harness from the PDIM to the rear of the radio. Verify both ends clicked in place. Make sure no corrosion on the contacts. Carefully inspect the individual wires of the harness for damage (nicks, cuts, breaks. If you have a DVM that can check continuity I'd check each wire (both ends disconnected of course).

      It's the logical place to start. You should be able to pull up those HW/FW version levels even with the aux and usb harness disconnected from the PDIM. There are two Bluetooth radios in these cars, one for the phone ops and another for music input (whether it's wired or wireless). The config path for the phone you reference would not be coming from the PDIM, which is the USB/aux/streaming Bluetooth music path only. If the built-in phone Bluetooth support is not working, that is part of the main radio head unit itself. Now you mention _Sat Nav_ also, which would mean it's not the base radio in this video at all but something more like a MyLink. If the radio isn't the one in this video, but a touch screen type, then there is no separate PDIM as it's built into the main radio head unit on the MyLink style ones.
      But if I've understood what you're saying here, either way it's the main radio head unit that would need to be serviced, presuming there's no problem with the wiring harness from corrosion/abrasion etc causing these symptoms. Confirm my understanding and the year of your Cruze and I can give you some further advice on how to address.

      @@456of789 It was probably you posting a URL in the comment, those almost always get spam bucketed. Your question is probably going to be too technical for an owner to owner forum like that to get answered over there.
      If I had this problem in the USA, I'd still suspect the radio head unit and hit up a local salvage yard and pull one just like this for testing purposes. Here a touch screen radio from these years would run around $30. I'd swap that in, but not start the car, just to see if the Bluetooth menu became accessible now in the swapped unit (I'd 99% expect the answer to be yes it does).
      Since the vehicle is out of warranty, I'd go the route of opening the original unit up and the salvage unit, and locating the board inside responsible for phone bluetooth and swapping them. Repeating the test to confirm success. I'd go this component swap route to avoid having to deal with the VIN lock of swapping the main board, if I could.
      I can't tell you what board that might be, as I'm unfamiliar with this radio you have. But that might give you a better question to ask. Also I'd put this question on a more technical board like digital-kaos.co.uk, which is also non-USA based so increasing the possibility some tech is familiar with the Australian Cruze radio setups from 2011. It would be a much larger job where you would need a salvage car to pull the parts to assemble all the missing components. You would need the compatible radio head unit, the PDIM, the wiring harness between them, the harness to the center console, and the aux/USB module that plugs into the center console harness. Hello, I was looking at replacing my PDIM in my 2013 cruze eco. I took apart the console to see what PDIM I had, but I ended up not finding any PDIM but rather an empty space where it should be. • @DrShock
      @DrShock  3 роки тому

      Option KTA was the factory set with aux/usb audio for the regular radio head unit. The PDIM is wired to the USB jack in the center console only. These GM option codes don't follow each other sequentially, KTF is unrelated to entertainment features. If you have a MyLink radio, that would explain it. If the USB in the center console is working, I'd look again for the PDIM. Only way, with factory wiring, that could be functional.

You see both wiring harness connectors I show in the video (one from the radio and one from the USB/aux harness) but no PDIM to plug them into?
      If so, hmm yeah that is very odd. On the one hand you would have KTA in the glove box if it came with the PDIM. On the other hand who would go thru the trouble to manually add all the parts except the PDIM itself! Those SW and HW versions are just for reference to confirm you got something different after the upgrade, as a quick means of checking communications between the radio and the PDIM. I'd rely more on your having the existing option KTA harness installed (option sticker, USB jack, etc) to insure the radio is compatible as I showed in the vid. The display screen module, the module with the control buttons, and the radio module (which also includes the XM receiver) all communicate over their own local bus separate from the vehicle bus.
