Growing up in Bombay in late 50s, we had no refrigerator, we never even heard of expiry date, everything was fresh on top of all we were lucky to have food, today's snacking was luxury only for upper class. We are happy that we survived without expiry date concept.

It’s a total waste culture nowadays, not only in food,
but also in textiles, electronics, furniture, household items, water, energy etc.
I’m German and I haven’t had a refrigerator for the past 14 years. It’s just a matter of timing so that perishable stuff doesn’t get rotten.
Eggs for instance are good for 3 or 4 weeks without refrigeration. Yoghurt is good for many days after expiration date if unopened, etc.
      - Just a few examples of where to save/economize.
Sadly many people have lost appreciation for things and resources they think are granted and will be abundant forever, especially those people who hadn’t gone through any existential hardship.

I have never thrown packaged food just because it is a few days or couple of weeks beyond the "best before", or "expiry" marked on the package. I have not been any the worse for that. As this video says, by marking shorter expiry dates, the manufacturers sell more products.

Companies also contribute to wastage by forcing the consumer to buy larger quantities. Smaller quantities are not sold or you have to pay more for lesser quantities. I often only use half the packet and the remaining becomes unusable.
The funny part is that some of these companies advise consumers to "please don't waste your food" in their ads.😂😂😂

As a person who works in the retail food market, we have had numerous hundreds of power blackouts that have led to the tossing of thousands of products that are still good and could be donated but as per policy the items must be destroyed in order to benefit from insurance and to stop potential lawsuits. The amount we throw out every year just in our stores that never gets eaten would blow peoples minds.

    Great topic Palki Sharmaji.
There is lot to said about food wastage and habits. Most vacuum packaged foods are good months after the stated date. Once opened they need to be consumed within short period.
Pickles - last years. So also wine. Uncooked Rice - many prefer aged compared to recent.
Fresh vegetables, milk & milk products are the ones that must be consumed before the dates.

In India, expiry dates are governed by rules & guidelines ( under the FSSAI ). interestingly there is an expiry date on 1) ghee.
    2) seeds.
    the same FSSAI
    3) allows mixing 2% UREA in milk !
    4) compels adding milk solids ( mainly imported ) to packaged milk.
    5) compels honey to be heated.
    6) allows MSG i.e. monosodium glutamate to be added to foods , despite it being proven carcinogenic in some studies.

Supermarkets put special prices or discount prices on 6 to 3 months left for expirations goods. Like dry noodles, chocolates, oats, canned goods, flavored bottle drinks, nuts and cookies. I always get the chocolates and put them in my ref. I used it when I baked muffins or pancakes.

As a physician, I have seen many people getting food poisoning just because they ate too old food... it is sometimes astonishing how so many people don't even look at the expiry date of the things they eat.... So, I don't think the problem is the expire date on products, rather it is the inability of people to properly cook and understand WHAT HEALTHY AND FRESH FOOD is and prepare it. Good food is freshly made and consumed immediately after preparing. But the demand for fresh food is not so high as for packed, highly elaborated and canned food....

    • @MichitaAmaru
      @MichitaAmaru Рік тому

@SB Tig this is just a response/reflex of your body. When little puppies are trained in regard to responding to the call of nature, they are set on a toilet (dog toilet with sand) just after they are given food, until they do what they have to do to relive themselves. It is done after eating because the reflex is strong and they most probably are going to relive themselves. So nothing wrong with you body. Simply answer the call of nature when it calls 😉
Should this be too much of a problem and cause you suffering, go to a doctor and have a check up...

I've always treated "EXPIRY DATE" & "BEST BY DATE" as separate entities in that "BEST BY" means that it probably won't taste as nice as it would've a few days ago (yeah, a no brainer, I know), whereas "USE BY" means it may be better off as chook food.
In a recent shopping expedition a noticed a trolley full of bread buns behind the ship counter that the supermarket was going to toss out because they'd "expired", but more than likely there was nothing wrong with them. Except they'd "expired".

Foods with expiry dates are consumable after 2-3 days of dates. It's not they are fully spoilt, it's the freshness. As long it does not smell and look bad, some foods are consumable.

The food wastage numbers in absolute numbers is misleading because it does not take in to consideration the amount of people living in the country. A per capita food wastage number is more interesting and in that most Asian countries would be very low while the western countries that use processed food would be much higher.

For people willing to listen the internet is teaching us that regardless of location we are one.
The level of waste has more to do with the adoption of ready to eat food as opposed to regional culture. As children of parents who lived through the US great depression of the 1930s my generation was taught to respect food. The generations that followed us not so much. However focusing on food waste seems righteous but is generally a fool's errand. We feel good by not wasting but our saved food is not reaching the people who need it. There is a surplus of food in the world. The problem is conflict, violence, and corruption. These result in poverty which results in hunger and starvation.
In the US about 1/2 of all waste happens in factories, transportation, and offered for sale but not purchased by consumers.

I've always thought about the expiry date on packaged food. I keep wondering, what if they mixed the numbers or typed it wrong. I eat 'expired' food until it looks and smells absolutely unfit for consumption. If I can't figure it out with either of these, then a very small bite helps.

Before the Wolrd Faces food shortage in the coming Years. The Countries around the World should take following actions
    1. Stop production of more food
    2. Analyse how much food is Sold to the reatil markets or restaurants
    3. Analyse how much food is wasted
    4. Foods like Vegetables, Dairy Products and many more should be given in permissible limits based on number of people currently living inside home
    5. Food given should be in limit which can be consumed for a week not more than that
    6. There should be easy tracking of food which is going to expire in 3 or 5 days and should be delivered to the nearest food banks
    7. Food banks should examine which is good quality food that can be served to homeless people and poor people who are dying of hunger
    8. Food banks should work as NGO and should give food without costs

A lot of food rather than going to rubbish bins can be used for generating fertilisers and gas. Specially in big societies. There has to be separate bins which muncipal corporations can collect and use for fertilisers rather landfill. Same for public eating places, school/college canteens, restaurants and hotels.

Packaged foods are not good to human health even if it's a few days old. It's convenience more than being healthy. Preservatives are chemicals that suppress organic degradation but that too is not good. Ideal or best food: Eaten fresh within hours or 2-3 days after it's plucked (fruits & veggies) or within 2-3 hours (cooked food). Ayurveda is a great treasure but most Indians (and the World) will go by what the reasearch in US or Europe (West) say. Ayurveda teachings are the future.

Expired its better not to use ,but foods such as wafers ,made up of refined floor dry snacks if they are tasting can be eaten if they haven't crossed many days after packing .
Moreover items such as honey, ghee ,pulses ,wheat ,dal this never get expires ,this food products dont have any expiry .

As long as food taste reasonably ok, it’s perfectly safe to eat past its expiry date. Your taste bud will tell if something is totally beyond eating (rancid, fermented etc) 🤮 Of course food will mostly taste better if eaten within the expiry date, fresher sure.
I wish people would take these into consideration before throwing away food that is still edible but been brainwashed (by social pressure) into thinking they’ll get sick, simple common sense out of the door. Throwing away edible food is unholy when there are starving people around the world.

Best thing is to STOP BUYING any food from packets except necessary items like raw wholegrains like raw rice or wheat flour.
    The is the only solution.
This is India. Indian LAW BODIES ARE INCAPABLE OF IMPLEMENTING THEIR OWN REGULATIONS. So the consumer itself should STOP BUYING FOOD IN PACKETS

I throw away lots of food due to it not being in good condition. Example is: bananas look good when I buy them but go bad very quickly at home so I end up throwing them in trash. Apples when I buy them looked good when I eat them they taste like junk so I junk them. Many other products are thrown out for similar reasons.

Real cheese ages if your frige works right real cheese is better 4 mo past due date in this area of US. A lot of canned food is.... taste n sniff before tossing. Fresh meat... I only eat bison a couple times a year. Fresh veg is what can get tricky depending on where you live... however you live. Point is to be sure the food really is bad before tossing. Many blessings of compassion and inner peace.

The comparison should be per number of people ; or per area. US and India are big countries so these numbers are misleading if not compared with our countries based on population etc
