- Michelle Jones is the founder and president of a small non-profit 2 years college she started a few years ago in response to criticisms about the higher education system in the US being broken. During her 15 years teaching Leadership and Organizational Behavior courses in the traditional college system, she had a front-row seat for what students and faculty were experiencing. Several years ago, she gathered a group of like-minded folks around a vision of what a revolution in higher education could look like. After years of helping groups and non-profits organize for social impact as a volunteer (SuperThank, TEDxMtHood, World Domination Summit) Michelle started her legacy project and a new kind of college - Wayfinding Academy - was born.
Interpretation for TEDxSalem VI (2019) was provided by student interns through a collaboration between Western Oregon University, TEDxSalem, and the Deaf and interpreting communities of Oregon. The volunteer student interpreters were supported by volunteer, certified interpreters in order to minimize potential errors. Unfortunately this seemed to be more of a promotion for her own business than actual advice for a students in college.
This is really excellent and an important video. Everyone in Higher Ed should be talking about models like this! We need real innovation and brave leaders to make real change.

This has been so helpful! I’m a freshman currently at a four year university and I’m currently questioning my path as to how I want to accomplish my career goals. I thought I wanted the ‘typical college experience’. Now l’m understanding the weight, financially mostly, of my academic choices. I attend a stem based university however I want to seek more design opportunities in a more uplifting environment that supports design as a career. This realization has also allowed me to question the importance of college and how I choose to further my education. Rather than looking for the ‘college experience’, I am putting a greater importance on what education path is best for me along with my well being. This video has helped me so much with having more confidence and assertion with my choices. Thank you!!

For me is so hard as an immigrant. After high school graduation 2020 I never went to college. Now that I see how hard is to find a job I’m going 2023 back to college I hope works out. Honestly Is sad how out here is not much help for students like me

I wish their website discussed some more specifics of their curriculum. It seems very art and humanities based, which is wonderful, but my interests are also in the science realm and I don't see how this would help me learn that.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As a spokesperson for Wayfinding, I can say we definitely agree we could improve on getting curriculum specifics on the website and that is definitely on our radar/to-do list.
As for the science comment, we think it does come down to specific versus general. We do believe we are best-suited to serve those who have general interests but have yet to narrow them down or truly try them out beyond a classroom setting, whether that's in science, art, technology, etc. If, say, a potential student is very sure they want to pursue their passion in something specific like forensic science, we would agree that there are other educational institutions that would likely better serve that specific focus. We do have a current student who has an interest in physics and is engaging in that through our programming, and we'd be happy to make a connection there to have them share their experience or answer any other questions at hello (at) wayfindingacademy (dot) org. Sorry it took me a while to get it started. :( It seems like an obviously better way to do college and I am surprised someone else didn't get to it first. Please tell others about it who you think could benefit from knowing it exists.
Don't get to try their major before they graduate? That's not the case at Penn State where student can do all kinds of labs beginning in the third semester or take a semester off to do a co-op
I got over 500 college credits because I loved Uni
You don't need to go to college to get an education, but you do need to go to college to get a certificate.

How does this work in the time of COVID-19?
We have lots of safety protocols in place and so far no cases of Covid on campus. Because we are small we can operate in person during this time and trust everyone in the community to do what they need to do to keep each other safe. Thank you for the question.

wow umm this video was interesting. I think she implemented a resolution that wouldn't be scalable to a college or community school. What is sounds like she did, is kinda along the lines of apprenticeship, so kids can get hands on learning and work in their field of study. I don't see a problem with it.
With government involved their will be no innovation or very slow innovation.
However the fix to higher education is actually quite simple but it's politically incorrect. We get rid of all loans for higher education and you will see how quickly tuition will fall. Loans are what are driving up tuition costs, universities are just taking advantage of getting paid by the government pretty much. If we cut loans, than students won't be so quick to go to college and they would probably go work and figure out if they actually wanna work in the field of their interest. If we also cut loans we will see colleges get rid of administration that isn't actually doing anything, to save costs.
As a current student, I can assure you this model is applicable to large scale schooling. It's more than apprenticeships and internships. There is a core curriculum that allows us to shape our projects around our interests in a way that we find interesting and meaningful, while also encouraging and helping us develop as students and people.
Also, the solution to higher education is far more involved than removing loans.

Thanks for your thoughts, Lillian. Wayfinding students do earn a state accredited associates degree, so we believe that degrees matter in many fields. We also believe that a one-size-fits-all path after high school doesn't make sense in today's world and that it also doesn't make sense to go into huge amounts of debt to earn a degree before you have a sense of purpose and before you've actually tried out the things you think you'd like to do. One of our goals is to help people avoid getting a degree and getting saddled with a $100,000 debt in a field they regret choosing because they never actually tried it. At many traditional colleges, hands-on experiences like internships are often an extra-curricular afterthought. At Wayfinding, they are an integral part of the curriculum.
If your parents are not rich don't go to college and figure out something else. There is a lot of alternatives today.

Given 10 to 15 minutes a year to tall with their advisor. That's bull. Students can meet with advisors once a week of they want to. But they generally don't.

ws674 students are more likely to take “personal responsibility” if they actually feel like they are successfully pursuing their passions and goals. Our current system breeds discontent and confusion. Leading a lot of students to lose their desire to stay fully engaged.
As a student at the school she created, I can tell you for a fact that taking personal responsibility is something that is nurtured.
