- In this episode, from November 23, 1964, four young men compete for $5000 in the finals of an Ford Aurora Table Top Racing Car Championship. The actual prize was a Ford Mustang and a $2000 scholarship. Mustang was of course a brand new and highly successful car for Ford. The race is officiated by one of Formula 1's greatest drivers, Sir Stirling Moss. Aurora sold a line of Model Motoring slot cars with Moss' name on them.

Thank you for posting this video, my family absolutely loves it. My dad is the winner. We heard about it our whole life and then my brother found it on here about 2 years ago! Such a proud moment!!!
How good to hear from you! I am always glad to hear from people who have direct, personal connections with these old TV postings. Do you still have to the trophy?
Jane Kilduff-Molino or Tom Kilduff - As a member of a model racing club , I'm recreating the poster that aurora had distributed.after this event, but can not be found anywhere.. If you are interested in seeing it, e-mail me at jbello2@optonline.net
Your dad was our hero Jane. Tell him we will never forget what he accomplished.
AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you just call your dad Car #1
Jane KIlduff-Molino,
Your dad was, & still is a Slot Car Hero to those of us that played/play with Aurora slot cars.
Between slot cars and The Moon Landing, The 60's was The Greatest Decade of all time.!
Many in my neighborhood had their own Aurora set and we all had a blast for days on end.
That was cool. I grew up in the sixties, what a great time. I had a slot car track myself..
Incredibly hard secret to guess. Stirling Moss did a great job here.
This is so cool. Reminds me of my younger days collecting and racing AFX and Tyco slot cars. Great video!
I remember watching Sir Sterling Moss tear it up at Mosport when I was a kid. It was a great time.
Thanks for posting! I've seen ads from early 1964 for Aurora's big challenge in which contestants were to qualify by beating Fireball Roberts' time. Sadly, he died later that year in a Fiery crash.
Wow, that's cool! I still have all my "Model Motoring" stuff. People think these old sets are boring because the cars are so slow. But ya know, these old set took skill! The new slot car sets are whats boring. They require no real skill, you just hold the controller wide open. The magnets are so strong holding the cars to the track. They do indeed go blindingly fast, but require no skill to race. Now the old stuff actually required skill to go as fast as you can AND stay on the track.
This is too cool. I used to have the Stirling Moss Aurora HO track. It was my first race set, that was given to me by my Uncle Bill. We spent many hours in my basement, my friend Randy and Cory's basement and occasionally, my cousin Steve's basement. Tyco had the best cars. I lost track at how much money I spent on all my gear. Love the banked turns. First cars were a Jaguar and Ford GT 40. My favorite and fastest was a Tyco Chaparal.
I loved Thunderjet 500. Not so fast to be unrealistic. More skills required to drive them
Great times😊.
Still have all of my Model Motoring Aurora Cars.
I have a bunch too. One very cool hobby that has lasted over 50 years for me,
I did my local hobby shop edition of this competition. Lost the race that counted because I went off track a couple of times, but won the "modified" race that was just local. used the same chassis with adifferent body and dual rear wheels. I won because I found the speed that the car would do the twisty parts and held the controler steady, never leaving the track - everybody else did jump the track.
Much better than video games! I'd spend hour's doing this, matter of fact I DID spend hours doing this.
great vid memories of the past love slot cars
In my opinion, the Aurora T-Jets with the Pancake motor were the bst cars to race...you had to have a certain degree of skill to race them. later on and even on into today, the cars have magnets to keep them on the track. Might as well just switch on the transformer and let them run by themselves...what fun is that.
That trophy was huge. Almost as big as the kid who won it.
Ed Sullivan even had a segment on a show one night where Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, Dan Gurney, and Graham Hill raced Aurora slot cars !!! Just think: 4 legendary racing champs, racing slot cars !! I wonder if there is any video of that show out there ? BTW, I still have about 100 cars, and over 400 feet of track. Now, all I need is the time to build a permanent layout, oh, and Da Missus' OK to use the whole garage !!!:P Peace:-)
WOW I have the exact same control box, it has a little brake on the side, they really put detail into everything
Very interesting. Thanks for posting.
AMAZING!
The good old day`s
These are 'Thunderjet 500' slot cars made by Aurora...
Those guys are all in there 60s now.
Ohh look out there's been a shunt! Classic!
Have over 250 ho slots from around the world. lots of track too-good to see this...
No, even the magnet cars would flick off if you went full bore into the curves. You still had to drive them, although they would hang on better than the pancake motored cars. Now Ideal TCR and Tyco Command Control - that was pointless. Just tape the controller trigger down and leave them.
The host looks like superman from the 50's or 60's
scrapplepig That's Steve Allen, he was a funny guy.
The host Bud C. actually was the voice of superman for the early animated cartoons. It's interesting that you sensed some connection.
Only one lane? :)
$5,000 could have bought you a small home back then... Nothing brand new but none-the-less a small home
Fun video, we race slot cars in southern Michigan as a club since 1990.
26 Saturdays from October to April on a 6-lane 60 running foot continues rail scorpion buck track with 10 turns. Click on my avatar for information and videos.
I wonder if # 1 still has the trophy, and the "real" Ford Mustang? For that matter did he use the $2000.00 scholarship? Maybe, he just dropped out did drugs, and died in the 'Nam.
Aren't you a ray of sunshine on a cold cloudy day.
What the h#ll kind of comment is that, you s#ck..
fuck that!~
