- BBC radio broadcast, 13 August 1997, featuring the choir of St John’s College Cambridge with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Christopher Robinson. Organ scholar: Peter Davis.
Published in 1895 as Nos. 11 and 12 of “Morning, Evening and Communion Service in A major” (Op. 12) but actually written in February 1880 as a work for choir and orchestra, having been commissioned by Sir John Stainer for the annual Festival of the Sons of the Clergy at St Paul’s Cathedral. It was first performed on 12 May 1880 in St Paul’s.
Wonderful orchestral textures, especially in the Nunc!
Yes, absolutely spot on Judith.
Just listened to it again. Wow! Definitely one of my desert island discs. John's is THE greatest choir. Thank God for George Guest and his successors.
Utterly fantastic! Wow- I’ve not heard this orchestral version… lovely! Thank you as always for posting these gems.
My favourite setting by Stanford
Bellissimo
I have only just seen this magnificent choral music, it is superb and wonderful indeed !!!!!!
I hope you find lots to enjoy!
I am quite sure I shall, if this is anything to go by !!!!!!!!!!
You have probably already seen the website, but if not, do have a browse; it tells you all about the Archive. www.recordedchurchmusic.org
Thanks, have a great week ---- on Monday 12th July !
Written with orchestra for the annual celebration of The Corporation of the Sons of the Clergy at S. Paul's Cathedral. I remember it being sung (plus orchestra) at S. Alban's Holborn, London in 1974. Amazing, especially the trumpets in the Nunc.
WOW!!
When did John's choral scholars leave the 12 ATB format?
