Now... boys and girls... listen to your Uncle Cody! He know exactly what he is talking about! Spot on review! I spent 35 years attached to our navy... so my comments about the unboxing would have been a little saltier... but like you said... the effort was worth it. One word of caution to people who haven't played it... Dave Dogge beat me with a reference to Snoopy vs The Red Baron... but such a scenario is not much fun. A small dogfight with equally matched planes can be frustrating... as it is difficult to get into firing position. However, asymmetric scenarios are a blast!
I sold ALL my Wings of Glory stuff after playing this. You got it so right "the game is the thing". I didn't mind the unboxing / stickering so much, somehow it made the game feel more personal once it was complete (I have no idea why). I know they're currently running a ww2 KS but I really want to the see the future jet/modern games that are to follow
It looks great but impossible to find now so going to do the WW2. Just deciding based on comments on the stickers whether to buy with stickers applied or be cheap and putting in the time myself; I might put more care into putting them on too. Well just about a week to decide. Can't wait for the Pacific and Eastern expansions. Thanks for the insight, helps make the decision easier
@@predraglazovic7149 thank you; one more quick question do you know if I order to Canada is there VAT/Customs or like Kickstarter is it not additonal. Regards
Thought about backing this game but passed. I did back the new Fighters of the Pacific, however, and would love to hear any of your preliminary thoughts.
Hi Cody, The mechanics seem great. One thing I was not sure came across clear - the theme. Would the game be different if as opposed to the German plane it was an F-16 or a WW2 plane? What brings the WW I theme into the game?
If you compare the gameplay between this and the WWII version they have on Kickstarter right now, you'll see a significant difference in how the planes are managed and maneuvered.
always liked aerial warfare games but felt they never addressed the 3D nature of it well (game mechanics) this seems to execute in a simple playable way - hopefully the system could be modified/expanded to encompass WWII aircraft & maybe even jets
I like these type of games but I don't have many friends that would play with me. I have also wondered why no one has converted these systems into a dragonrider version.
Well Cody, I’m going to go on your recommendation of “Buy it!” Iv’e heard the game is also a bit fiddley? (Aside from the game assembly). What is your take on possible Solitaire play? Hidden info?? A Blind man walks “Into” a bar! (Because He didn’t know where the front door was…. Yak yak yak) 😜
@@TheDiscriminatingGamer it’s a classic. Worth playing if you ever see a copy. It’s one-on-one with each player having a book that shows their view to the enemy plane. Players pick maneuvers simultaneously and cross-reference to find which page to turn too. It incorporates many maneuvers and has a lot of options for things you talk about in this game, like limits on maneuvers that over stress the engine. Really fun and surprisingly good.
It seems over-complicated and fiddly for what it actually is. Spending several hours applying stickers isn't a good start. I will give it a shot but so far I'm not impressed. In the mean time, I'll stick with Wings of War/Glory....which also has rules for altitude.
Sounds cool. But I'd like to see loop the loops, barrel rolls, immelmans, etc.
Indeed.

Outstanding job as usual!
Danke.
Not really into games like this, but I'm sure playing a game with Cody would be a blast.

Indeed. The game IS the thing.
At last a miniature game but with out 50 miniatures to buy!
Indeed.
Worth it! This is a really fun game.

I haven't played Fighters of the Pacific yet. Maybe somewhere down the line.
Hi Cody,
The mechanics seem great. One thing I was not sure came across clear - the theme. Would the game be different if as opposed to the German plane it was an F-16 or a WW2 plane? What brings the WW I theme into the game?
The gyroscopic effect, for one. Where the engine is situated in the plane matters great deal.

They have got WWII up on KS right now.
There is already a version of this game for WWII. The Kickstarter campaign is underway right now.
..disregard - kickstarter..ks duh!

This is from the same publisher as Tank Chess. Highly recommend Tank Chess.
I haven't played that one. Sounds interesting.
With all these dogfights someone should have reported the Red Baron to the ASPCA and the RSPCA back in the day.
Ha!

Time to make new friends, sounds like.

I didn’t find it overly fiddly. I haven’t tried it solo yet, so can’t comment.
But can it beat Ace of Aces?!
Haven’t played that one.

A friend of mine told me about that. Sounds fun.

The game is not overly complex or particularly fiddly. The stickering is, alas, a chore.
The new version they have on Kickstarter offers components which come pre-stickered and pre-labeled.
